can we just find a spot for him in the top 6 for a game or so. because it looks like he might need more ice time to feel more involved

I'd put him on the line with Hayes and Miller. Move Grabner down.

You can say same thing about vesey they both look lost and not productive on the 4th line but I agree give buch top 6 time right now . See what he can do for stretch of games .

Hayes needs a 'possession' driver on his line, even when they were scoring for fun their CF% was a black hole, i like JTM-Hayes but they really need someone who drives play on the other wing, from his small sample Buchnevich fits the bill.

We're crediting AV for being forced to call up Buch?

When AV sees a young guy with special tools who isn't performing he benches him, relegates him to the fourth line or sends him down. And those guys seems to end up responding.

I wish he'd extend this same courtesy to Vesey who basically did his best to play his worst from December-January.

Regardless, I completely disagreed with sending Buch down before and after. He didn't look much different from his last game here at all.

It's almost like AV is a decent coach who has some idea what he's doing. Maybe...

I'm a little more inclined to chalk this up to: Good player finally players with other good players, scores goal; than I am getting sent to the AHL for a game.

But. Whatever. We won. Buch scored. Why fight.

He played 6 games in a row (?) right before his demotion with Nash and Zibanejad. Vesey played himself into the spot bc Buch hadn't been doing anything with it, then Buch got demoted. Well before he scored the goal, Buch was obviously playing better than his last time in the top-6

Sometimes you have to play the long game. You get a potentially special player who isn't getting it done and you gotta show him tough love. Miller, Kreider.

Vesey doesn't have the upside of Buch. AV handles him differently. Treating everyone fairly doesn't mean treating everyone the same.

I dunno, seems like AV gets the most out of his young guys. Might not always make sense or seem logical but it works. You can chalk it up to luck or coincidence but I think it's more that AV knows what he's doing.

agreed. It was a huge part of his resume when we hired him too. Let's not forget Brassard and Zuccarello as young forwards who broke out under him

Actually, thats not what happened.

It was 7 games from his return to the demotion.

The first four games, he had 2 goals and 4 assists. The next three he had 0 points. Then the demotion happened.

Grabner has went 8 games without a point playing in the top 9. Vesey has had many three game stretches and longer than three game stretches in the top 9 this season without a point. No change in his place.

I'm not saying that people are wrong to question AV. He's the coach, this is a message board and it's all fair game.

We don't know what his message is to guys when they're dropped in the lineup. Or when they're demoted. We don't know the interpersonal relationships in the locker room.

What we do know is that AV has done a good job developing our young guys. Whether it seems appropriate or fair, it has worked out in the end thus far. He hasn't "ruined" anyone and guys seems to develop quite well.

Maybe what he does with Buchnevich seems unfair or irrational. I'd wager that in the end it works out well for him. I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise. AV seems to eventually get the best from his guys.

Maybe if he played Buchnevich through thick and thin things would be better than they are now. I don't know. I can only judge based on what has happened and based on what has happened AV seems to coax his kids into performing at a high level.

I think a huge part of what AV is looking for out of young players is play without the puck and making good decisions with it in general. I think they get benched or sent down far more often because of that than lack of scoring at times

Just about ever goal he's scored thus far has been a goal scorers goal (i.e. the goalie didn't have much of a chance). He's going to be fun to watch when he hits his stride

Shift-to-shift consistency seems to be a big thing with him too.

Consistency will come from regular play time and confidence.

He's still a rookie playing on a new continent.

Heck, he's still working on learning English. That will also help him a lot.

That kind of consistency comes with maturity far more than playing time and confidence. It's not a criticism that he doesn't have it. He's 21 years old.

It is nice to watch a player at this stage. I had hopes for Duclair, and saw raw skill that looked promising.
Buchnevich has shown, to me at least, an ability to think out the options. The goal he scored tonight was pretty savvy for someone his age.
