That would likely resolve a good chunk of it.

The backup is often given the crappier teams, as well as the 3 in 4 games, and/or 2nd or back-to-backs. Strategic use to put them in a better chance for success.

Sure, it's also absurd to compare a goalie playing 68 games to one playing 13... workload means something.

But it seems unusual that he doesn't win more often.

The shot counter definitely screwed Marty, every goal counted obviously but not every save. Ridiculous that the standards aren’t consistent but for him gaa is more representative for comparisons sake

In regards to Marty - wins, shutouts, gaa...all that stuff is great and really speaks to how great of a player he was and the really strong teams we were blessed with for all those years. Thing is, it doesn’t really matter. Imho, that’s all secondary to one thing and that’s the way he played with the puck. I mean we know how great he was at doing it, but I also think we were so used to it that it kind of got to a point where you didn’t even notice it and how much of a factor it played in our game. Even with the trapezoid in place, the Devils literally enjoyed the benefit of playing with 3 defenseman on the ice when Marty was in net. That’s how good he was. I don’t think we’ll ever see a goaltender play the game like him again. Now that a few years have passed, just watch any random old game and you’ll notice how much his play stands out. His stats and records are ridiculous but they don’t even begin to tell the story with him.

Elias's retirement ceremony was boring AF. Until he spoke. I love 2000 playoffs and coming back from 3-1 to the flyers and the iconic moments but Elias was soooo much more. How about 2nd best Czech player behind Jágr. Forget about 2003 Cup. Or helping the team get to the 2012 finals. Switching back to center after years on the wing, because the Devils didn't have anyone else. Then Elias cones up to the podium and all is right with the world. Jokes about Lou being a hard *#%. Nod to Burns, Jeff freaking Friesen ( who had his own iconic goal) and Rupp. Then thanked the guys from 2012. Kept it real about the ups and downs. Best part gave a shoutout to Zacha. Hopefully that give him a boost..Elias!!
