What They're Saying

SB Nation College Hockey:

A left shot, Harper is a possession type forward who can zoom up the left wall and blow by opposing defenders. On the power play he set up shop on the half wall and the puck went through him. He has a sneaky, quick release on his wrist shot. He has great hands and puts touch on his passes. He had great chemistry with linemate Jamie Armstrong, another prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft.

Obviously, with a player his size, the question is, is he dynamic enough to offset his lack of physical stature? The jury is still out on that, but he's proven that he can still be a force even against better competition than in prep hockey.

From what I can tell, Harper will play for Omaha again in 2016-17, then enroll at BU in 2017-18.

lol @ Poile, is this the smallest guy in the draft ? Draft recaps have him at 5'7" 150. Smaller than most 8th graders.

Poile musta been way PO'd when he missed out on 5'9" Benjamin Finklestein in the last round.

He deftly avoided the 6'7" 224# Stanley, to grab Fabbro.

Just a re-run of every draft for the last 18 years, lol.

Thank goodness we avoided Julien Gauthier in the first round.

41 goals in the Q, 231 pounds of body building....father / grandfather body builders.

All those things that apparently disgust Poile.

Perhaps go back and look at drafts ? Instead of 2 guys out of 18 years ? Yes, of a couple hundred picks over the years, we've picked a couple of big guys....and about 90 % the classic 5'9" 170#

Look at this year -

6'0"
5'9"
5'9"
6'0"
6'3"
5'7"
6'3"
6'1"

Poile must have fainted when somebody took the 6'3" guys without him knowing, lol.

He just loves the 5'7 - 5'9 guys, that's all....gotta get 'em all !! like pokemon.... Not sure why you guys are so desperate to deny this. It only happens every draft.

And avoid guys like Gauthier like the plague.

A talented big guy who doesn't pan out can always grow into a 3rd / 4th line contributor. A 5'7 guys who doesn't reach his potential - skating coach somewhere.

yeah three other teams passed on him after us. I guess their GMs are idiots too.

and since when is 'bodybuilding" (and even more laughably, a family history of body building) a positive prognostic indicator of NHL success?

did you miss this years playoffs? Bulk and brawn have given way to speed and agility in the modern NHL

it takes about 3 seconds of google to prove you are talking out your rectum.. just between 2012 through 2014

all at least 6'1"

maybe next you will complain that we are constrained by an internal budget and only spend to the cap floor... or that we don't have good attendance... might as well explode all the myths at once while youre at it

Fabbro is 6'3" and projects to be a better player than Stanley, IMO. Thanks for stopping by though.

im guessing desmondtootoo is ColdChicory from the old boards. He always complained about us being a team of smurfs.

Could be, lol.

Nice to see that there's still a "NUH-UH !!" brigade always on duty, 24-7-365. With no actual proof, just "NUH-UH !!". That's how it always was. But it's funny to see it on a new board where they don't rule the roost, and shout down and run off anybody who disagrees with them. I know that hurts some of you to the very core. The old board that the "special boys" started, and ruled with an iron fist......that was really something.

"At least 6'1" " isn't a great proof of something. We have a preponderance of 5'7" to 5-10" in the drafts and on the ice, but 6'1" still isn't going to win the grinding it takes to get further in the playoffs.

I'm glad that size no longer matters. Somebody will have to tell the Sharks that it was pointless to have the wide bodies / tall guys in Thornton, Burns, Polak, Dillon, Zubrus, Ward, Marleau, Haley. Gaustad and Weber the only guys we had to bang with them. Johansen plays small, Bitetto actually played a little bigger than he is, I was impressed with him.

Penguins had size and real grit in Malkin, Sestito, Lovejoy, Cole. Kunitz, Hornquist, Letang all know how to play the gritty playoff game.

I was quite happy and proud with the season this year. But we won't go any further with only 3 or 4 guys kicking it up a notch when we're in the playoffs.

It's only been true every time, so far. But just say "NUH-UH !!".....that'll show me !

Nobody ever said body building = NHL success. But thanks for strawmanning us to death.

But there actually is still something known as a power forward in hockey.

Sorry you missed that memo.

And a guy who has a 41-goal scoring touch AND a body builder's size / strength ? Yeah, we don't want to mess with that.

You probably should get on the guys who gave the TV commentary on the draft.....they're the ones who showed the guy's father / grandfather and talked about it.

do you even look at a roster or do you just make **** up?

Ekholm is 6'4"
Granberg is 6'3"

does every defenseman have to be a giant to make you happy?

still seems like youre pining for Yonkman
Eckholm and Grandberg will never utter a peep at somebody who runs Rinne or wrecks Forsberg. Rinne got bumped all over the place in the playoffs. Sharks didn't let anybody do that to Jones. Height doesn't matter all the time, other than it would be nice to not specialize in / fixate on 5'7" - 5'11" guys.

Your Yonkman thing is old....about 10 years lol. Though when he was available to the Preds and Scott Walker or Scott Nichol were our tough guys.....he would have been useful.

It's no older than your insistence that we be a team of brutes and/or that we are nothing but smurfs.

But hey, the fact is we just got farther than we ever have. So the nice thing is we will find out whether your concerns or my optimism are correct this next year.

We ended up losing to a team, because of size. That is all.

Preds did do well, great even. But they got only as far as their pretty good talent and smallish size would allow, in the NHL playoffs that emphasizes grit and toughness more than any other sport's post-season. This has only been true for about 90 years.

You can have the grit / toughness somewhat independent of pure size. This year's Pens come to mind, though they had a good mix of both. We had neither.

Weak 6'3" / 6'4" guys don't win deep in the playoffs. We had nothing but Weber / Gaustad, both of whom were inconsistent with their toughness. I was pleased with how Bitetto and Arvidsson stepped up, but too little too late.

PIT won because of their speed not grit.

Grit and toughness are the same friggin thing, let's not act like they aren't just for the sake of trying to prove a point. Pittsburgh isn't the best example for this either.

Grit is what Kunitz, Hornquist, Cullen, even Kessell sometimes, bring. The first two are among the best in the league at it.

They're not tough guys, in the overall scheme of things. Guys like Sestito, Cole & Bonino in the playoffs, even Malkin when he uses his body, were tough for the Pens this year. Malkin drops people when he feels like it.

lol at the lecture.....when you're denying a distinction that's true throughout hockey, for 90 years.

We just don't have those guys. Our 2 possibles, Weber and Gaustad, were hit or miss last year, and goone now.

PIT won because of their speed not grit.

They had to go out and get Hagelin because they didn't have enough speed. They sure had some after he got there. They won mostly for the talent overload with Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Hagelin, Letang. And because about 6 of their young guys / role players played way over their heads.
