Hi all, we've been talking in the roster thread about how Stanley Cup Champions brought their rosters together, and what big free agent signings/trade deadline deals put them over. I created for each team their roster of anyone who played in the playoffs that season, in what way they were acquired, and a "code" for each (that being Trade, Free Agent, Draft, Waivers). Acquisition cells that have royal blue text are what I deem to be the most important TDL and free agent signings, but please add your opinion if you disagree! This will all leave it up to discussion how we compare with that this season, or if anything meaningful is there.

How about no quoting of OP's excellent work? That way the tables can be updated and the page easier to read.

From here, we can compile the genetic makeup of cup winners. While the drafted players were vital core components, the amount of non drafted players is what is really catching my eye. Detroit 2008 aside. Building from within, only goes so far short of a little luck on draft days.

Hording may not be the key to a cup, which means GMs should sell high on young players, in particular when they are about to become expensive fat cats, and who can be replaced by cheaper players of similar skillsets. And who may not be quite the same hungry player they were before that jackpot deal got signed.

So, I quickly put this together about breakdown for every Stanley Cup team in the post-lockout era, and made a comparable for this year's Caps team.

2006-2016 Stanley Cup Champions
Draft|Free agent|Trade|Total
100|71|87|258
38.8%|27.5%|33.7%|100%

2017 Washington Capitals
Draft|Free agent|Trade|Total
13|9|3|25
52%|36%|12%|100%

It looks to me like we have a similar breakdown in that we build mostly through the draft, but we have traded less than the other teams to build our team. I don't know if that actually hurts us or not, but it may be holding us back to rely this much on drafted talent (and yes, obviously the percentages look more substantial than they are for the Caps due to the small data set).

What stands out are trades, or lackthereof. I suspect some will counter this, but I think the day of the big blockbuster trades have long passed. A big trade now, is a Brouwer for Oshie type deal.

So we horde and push all in that our drafted talent is above average and cup worthy, or we let many walk as free agents.

While we have contended and thus are not very likely to sell/trade, the fact remains that guys we have no intention of resigning (Semin Green etc) show that we really didn't feel that highly of them in the first place, yet retained them until the bitter end anyways. I suppose those players could to be traded (maybe best in the year) before they become UFA, and it be a key to help securing a cup.

We all know contenders don't sell, but we also know only 1 team wins the cup, and few are actually true contenders. What did the cup winners do in the year before ;).

Well ALMOST HALF of last year's Pens roster were acquired via trade according to the table. Slightly less than 1/3 of the 2014 Hawks and about 1/3 of the recent cup-winning Kings came by trade. So that 1/3 average is pretty solid. The Caps are way behind in that regard even among modern winners. 6-8 seems pretty average. The 2012 Bruins had 11 guys from trades.

The Caps sitting at 3 guys via trade and more than 50% via draft seems pretty unusual for a Cup team these days. Contrast them with the 2007 Ducks who had 12 trades and maybe 4 draftees.

The closest comparison in terms of composition seems to be the 2008 Red Wings.

So are you saying that we should be sellers at the TDL to compete for a Cup run? I just want to make sure I'm following you correctly, because that doesn't really make sense to me.

I agree that blockbusters are done in the way of a Gretzky-to-Kings type trades, but the Kessel trade last year? That was definitely a current market-level blockbuster. I don't even know that we can say that we don't highly value those players, but that they stopped fitting into our scheme or our dynamic at a point, and we wanted to maximize the talent to attempt a Cup run. Yeah, it didn't work out then, but I don't know that we were hoarding talent for no reason. It does make sense to maximize value for a Cup run in this season IMO, but we also have a future to worry about.

The other thing that strikes me is that these teams don't make trades for depth just for the sake of adding depth. Almost all of the trades are made to bolster their gameday roster and many of them are significant additions, not just third pairing or fourth line players like Mike Weber, Tim Gleason, Scott Walker, etc.

I think this further cements my opinion that unless the Capitals can go all out and trade for a legitimate top player, I'd rather they just stand pat this TDL. Deadline deals might be expensive but offseason trades can be made for reasonable prices (does anyone miss Troy Brouwer, Pheonix Copley, or that third round draft pick?) and should be made to make the team better.

great work, OP!
(also, cool to see all of these players who are each better than Ovi because they have a Cup.)

What is interesting to me is how "meh" so many of the draft picks turned out to be. I know draft picks are treated as gold, but they're a crapshoot. If there's an opportunity to get an established player that you think makes your team better, go for it.

I'd qualify that as "an established player that fits into your long term cap structure".

No, I am saying move assets long before that.

Have enough vision to know that 1.5 years from now, there is NO way we will be able to afford player X. Also, recognize that there hasn't been any significant showing in past playoffs to basically push all in on keeping a guy that can't even stay healthy for 1 series. Often, 2 years before a guy goes UFA, they are fat cats and not giving a full effort all anyways. Maybe a Mike Green or Alex Semin are good examples.

Moving that same player under contract, could yield a small ransom. Replace them with presumed slightly less skilled, but more affordable and hungrier players, vs losing them for nothing.
