The Florida Panthers held a press conference this morning to announce a few events that have happened in recent days surrounding the team.

The first being the completion of two trades. The Panthers have acquired Jaroslav Spacek from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Lyle Odelein, a 2nd rounder and undisclosed cash. Spacek is a pending UFA, but GM Otten hopes to get him signed long term. "Once Spacek arrives in Florida, we'll make the call to his agent Reggie Swingstein and try to work out a deal to lock up Jaroslav for the next couple of years. He's a very good fit for us, as another player capable of playing an excellent two way game on the ice, and becomes a valuable partner for Eric Brewer," said Otten. The other deal is sending winger Chris Simon to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Tyson Nash and a 6th rounder. "Chris just didn't fit into our plans anymore and we wish him the best with Atlanta where he can be of much better use by Mr. Taucar, " commented Otten. Spacek and Nash could be expected to be in the lineup as early as tonight.

The second news worthy event being Dave Lewis selected as the Eastern Conference's coach for the All Star team. This earns the Panthers $200,000. "Dave has done a magnificent job for us this year and he deserves this honor," Otten claimed.

The third event being prospect Jonathan Sigalet reaching the 30 point plateau in the AHL and earning the Panthers their third million in the Mountain Dew endorsement deal.

Also approaching is the trade deadline, where it's said the Otten may very well be active in bringing in a couple veteran wingers to alleviate the pressure from Doan, Torres and Daigle.

The Panthers are also mired in a 4 game losing streak, that sees their once stronghold on the 8th spot in the East, slipping. "We've got to get our act together," said Otten, "This is a very important part of the season and one we can't afford to hit the skids." It doesn't get any easier for the Panthers either, with their next two games against the Wild and Blues.
