The Florida Panthers held a news conference this morning to announce the acquisition of a top 4 defenseman from a fellow Eastern Conference team.

The Club announced that they have acquired veteran defenseman Jason Smith from the Washington Capitals in exchange for rookie defenseman Trevor Daley.

"Smith adds a really veteran presence to our blueline. He is a tenacious worker, has plenty of playoff experience and gives us a real shutdown defenseman who can help with some of our younger players. His 78 DF rating is among the highest rated in the HFNHL," said GM Brock Otten.

Smith is expected to jump into the top 4 alongside Brian Campbell to give the team a solid top 4 of Jaroslav Spacek, Eric Brewer, Jason Smith and Brian Campbell. Darius Kasparitis is expected to move to the 3rd pairing with Sean O'Donnell.

Daley was currently playing as the Panthers 6th defenseman, in this his rookie HFNHL season. He was acquired by the Panthers in the offseason along with Brad Richardson in exchange for Chris Campoli.

This move comes after the Panthers have opened the HFNHL season with victories against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Buffalo Sabres, and against perrenial Western Conference warriors the St Louis Blues. Smith is expected to jump into the lineup against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.
