You answered your own question in the 2nd line. The RSL is arguably the lowest scoring major hockey league in the world. Point-a-game is a fantastic number in that league. Also, the league is mostly experienced pro and semi-pro players. For Ovechkin to even play in the league at his age is a feat in and of itself. It would be the equivalent of a young CHL player playing and contributing in the AHL.

But the last time i seen this kind of hype about a kid was when Gretzky was 17 and playing with pro's in the WHL,but he wasn't 8th in scoring on his team! as a matter of fact he lead the whole league by a wide margin, there must be something else about his game to get this kind of hype.

For one thing he lead the WJCs in goals at the age of 16. For another, Bob McKenzie reported that every scout he talked to said they would have taken Ovechkin 1st overall in the 2003 draft were he eligible. NHL scouts are among the ones heaping the most lavish praise on him, calling him a surefire franchise player. At the age of 18 he was, last time I checked, leading his team Dynamo Moscow in scoring, and was 4th overall in the league, both unheard of numbers in the RSL for a player that age. He's also been "graduated" to the Russian men's national team (the one that plays exhibition games against other countries, not the Olympic or WC team).

At the age of 18 he was, last time I checked, leading his team Dynamo Moscow in scoring, and was 4th overall in the league

He turned 18 this past September, so I am referring to the season currently in progress.

For comparison, Ilya Kovalchuk, who was the consensus 2001 #1 overall pick and has scored almost 70 NHL goals before the age of 20, did not even play in the Superleague during his draft year, instead playing in the High League one level below.

No, the RSL 2003-04 season has started already, and Ovechkin leads his team in scoring (or did when I last checked 2 to 3 days ago).

After 7 games Dynamo is the leader of the regular season and Ovechkin is leading his team in points: 5 (3+2). He is playing in 2nd line.

As for previous season, he was 16-17 years old playing in 3rd and 4th lines, so I'd say he had normal stats.

Why people is so crazy about him, well look at his stats.

In January of 2002 at the World U17 Championship in Selkirk, Manitoba, Alexander led all scorers with 12 goals in 5 games. Ovechkin followed his performance at the U17's with a spectacular World Junior U18 Tournament in Slovakia. He scored 14 goals (broke the record of his idol Matlsev who scored 13 goals) and added 4 assists in 8 games to lead the tournament against player two years older than him.

Also a year ago he was taking part in 4 nations U20 tourney in Sweden and had 7 points (6+1) in 3 games.

At the WJC U18 2003 he had 13 points (9+4) in 6 games. At the WJC U20 in Halifax being 2 years younger than most players he had 7 points (6+1) in 6 games (noone scored more than 6 goals at that tourney).

At Cheske Poishtovna at the beginning of September he made debut in senior national team and got 3 points (1+2) in 3 games.

And to boot he has a complete game.
Not a single hole in his game.
Great passer, great scorer, great vision, good checker, works in the corners, two way forward, not egoistical...
The complete package.

It's like playing in a weaker NHL at 17 and having some success.

Correspondants of one of the two main russian sports newspapers identify the three stars of every single game of the RSL. Till now, Ovechkin has been selected 4 times amoung the stars over the seven games played ( 1-1-2).

May have personnaly add that I had the chance to go to the 2003 World Junior and talked with some NHL scouts about Ovechkin. They all said in January 2003, as the TSN journalist reported, that he would be the number one pick if available in June 2003.

As folks have mentioned, those are his stats as a 16 and 17-year old in the best pro league in the world after the NHL (many would support that). It is much stronger than the AHL, I would say.

There are a couple of factors here - first of all, the style of hockey is pretty defensively-oriented and low scoring. Also, younger players seldom get top-line duties, and those that do have to work years for it. It's the way players are developed - they earn their duties as checkers.

In North America, they're a bit more willing to give kids big minutes right away.

I wouldn't make Gretzky comparisons, but Ovechkin looks rangy, kind of like Joey Thornton - only much more advanced than the latter at this age.

He are the 13 best scorers of last year in RSL. Last year, the teams played 51 games. Only one player had more than a point per game. The fifth one only had 41 points, the equivalent of 70 points in NHL. One played had more than 20 goals (21), the euivalent of 33 goals in NHL's 82 games. About 15 players scored 15 goals and more last year, the equivalent of 24 in NHL's 82 games.

I seen him play and he is dominant, strong as a bull, hard hitter, a hard shot, great vision. The only thing I didn't like is that he made a really bad dive in one of the games, that kind of pissed me off.
