NFL will get rough with Jerry Jones if fight escalates over Roger Goodell’s extension

Jones has threatened legal action if Goodell gets extension. Now, league is firing back.

    NFL infighting.

Taking away the cowboys from Jones would puts it towards Anti-trust issue. And i don't think the NFL wants to get into that kind of fight.

I think forfeiting draft picks would be high on the list.

Jones 'conduct detrimental' to league, NFL says

Article details there is no discussion of forcing Jones out.

Let's see if Jones pursues his threat.

Here's the thing the one thing the NFL does not want. An anti-trust laws suit if they force Jones out.

You already forget about the NBA forcing Donald Sterling to sell??? The NFL has provisions and a mechanism in place to force and owner to sell. I don't expect this to get that far but don't count that out.

The Sterling situation never legally resolved whether the NBA could force an owner to sell.

The courts have declared that the NFL is 32 individual franchises. Regarding Sterling, he was deemed mentally unfit to operating the franchise and someone else that was part of the ownership group took control the sold the team.

And as long as Jones doesn't do anything that harms the league. (criminally and among other stuff) I don't see the NFL can force Jones out. Federal laws i think don't really care rather or not there are provisions allowing the league to do what ever they want.

One thing that annoys me with this and most other articles is the use of the term "the NFL". e.g. "NFL accuses Jerry Jones...", "letter sent by the NFL to Jerry Jones".

As far as I can tell the letter was sent by the NFL's Compensation Committee, which is a group of 6 owners. I don't believe under the NFL Constitution they can collectively speak for "the NFL" and its 32 owners, or impose a punishment on Jerry. That should require the commissioner Goodell to do so, or a vote by the full BoG.

Now it would get very interesting if the commissioner's office wanted to discipline Jerry for holding up Goodell getting a contract extension.

Even then, Sterling had a lot of public backlash so they had some justification to forcing him out.

This would purely be NFL politics and the Cowboys are a money-making machine. If Jones would get forced out, you know he wouldn't lose the Cowboys without a fight.

Talk about a Sophie's choice for NFL fans, having to side between Jones and Goodell.
