That's awesome (Monahan), sounded like he's really taking on a leadership role, especially in the playoffs. He'll be the future captain for sure.

God dammit, now I'm going to have to go out and buy a letter to put on my jersey?

No, I'm not.

Or maybe I will.

I DON'T KNOW, OKAY!

22 players to start the season and no spare defensemen. Interesting.
I don't like it at all. If a defenseman goes down in the pregame skate we are ****ed. At least Stockton is close enough for same day recalls though.

Alright, so I have it figured out how I will track the salary cap. It may not be 100% but it will be extremely close.

As we know a team can spend $71,400,00 over the course of a season, that is total salary for the season not how much in cap hits can be on the roster at one time. The NHL tracks the cap daily, under the assumption that every roster player will be on the roster until the end of the season. The season is 185 days from opening night, to the final night of the regular season. So for example a player making $1,850,000 per year would counts as $10,000 per day against the cap, if they were on the roster for 47 days, their cap cost would be $470,000.

Long term injured reserve does not remove cap hits from counting against the cap, as long as they are on the team, they count against the cap. The team would however be allowed to exceed the salary cap by the amount of the AAV of the injured player.

The only thing I am unsure of is whether or not Ryan Culkin counts against the cap. While the Flames have announced Culkin was cut they cannot officially demote him until he has medical clearance. He will be designated as being on non-roster injured reserve.

Honest question. Does Culkin, since he can't be demoted while injured, get an NHL paycheque?

Culkin won't count against the cap because he will placed on LTIR. Maybe one or 2 days might count as he comes on/off the roster. He has to come on to the roster to placed on LTIR and again when he comes off to be assigned to Stockton. Could be one of the reasons why Byron/Raymond were waived. (Maanta* was demoted to Wilkes/Scranton today for that reason, just a paperwork thing)

Players on LTIR count against the cap. You can just exceed the cap by that amount, so if you aren't going to go over the cap with your replacement LTIR doesn't exist.

Culkin may not count as he'd be on non-roster injured reserve.

Yeah, we're definitely on the small side, for sure. Not much you can do about it either when Huds and Gaudreau are your top two wingers.

Jebus is LA ever a big team though eh?

My mistake, you're correct. Should have known something drew up by lawyers wouldn't be that simple. I searched for something about Culkin's situation to no avail.

I think that technicality is in place so you cannot fall below the salary cap floor in the case of an injury.

That is a reason and may be part of it but it is also in place for other reasons too. If an injured player was removed from the cap, their annual cap cost would decrease, which would allow teams to gain cap space at the end of the year. For instance last season Giordano missed say 60 days, the Flames would have gained over 1.3 million in cap space they could allot elsewhere. This rule makes it so you only get temporary cap relief during the injury if absolutely needed and not after the player returns from injury.

No Ortio, eh? That's interesting. But glad Hartley is standing by his word for now regarding "lose and you're out."
