getting to games on a weeknight is a nightmare coming from cary. you either sit in traffic forever on 40 during rush hour or you sit in traffic forever through cary during rush hour.

This is probably the biggest problem with most southern markets, they are so sprawled out so it sucks getting anywhere. Compare Boston to Atlanta, similar sized metros, but Boston has 200,000 more people in 80 fewer square miles. Same with Buffalo vs Raleigh. or Toronto vs Dallas.

This is probably the biggest problem with most southern markets, they are so sprawled out so it sucks getting anywhere. Compare Boston to Atlanta, similar sized metros, but Boston has 200,000 more people in 80 fewer square miles. Same with Buffalo vs Raleigh. or Toronto vs Dallas.

It honestly wouldn’t be an issue if the team had been competitive these many years. There’s a big difference between sitting in 45 minutes of traffic to see two rivals battle for a playoff spot, and sitting in 45 minutes of traffic to see a bad team get shut out in a game that’s already meaningless in December for the 8th year in a row. After a certain point it really isn’t worth the trouble and money just to sit there and be grim for 3 hours.

That's true, and Anaheim especially sucks with attendance despite being a good team.

Yeah but I think it helps walk ups for a bad when you have to walk past the box office to hop on the train home or something, as with the Bruins and Rangers, which in bad times have good attendance even compared to original or original expansion teams like Chicago, Detroit, or Pittsburgh.

That’s true, walk-up sales for the Canes are people making special trips to the arena just for that purpose. You’d never just randomly find yourself driving through the PNC Arena parking lot during the day.

True North was a single buyer and had already been vetted by the league. Also it was a straightforward business-to-business transaction with a distressed seller. It’s not a comparable situation at all.

I think the nature of the situation is that it could be going swimmingly, or it could be completely off the rails, and it will appear the same to outsiders either way. We just don’t know.

Eh, the Thrashers part of the purchase yes, but they had been working with the NHL for months about an arrangement to purchase a team (was assumed to be AZ/Phoenix), and it only got changed over to Atlanta at the last minute when things went into emergency mode by the league since they couldn't keep the team in the arena with any kind of realistic rent situation because the assholes that comprised A$G wanted them out at all costs. They already had the money in place, at a far lower number, to purchase a team at the time the Atlanta situation came to a head.

And just to add to this. TNSE also has a financial backer worth 30 billion in David Thomson, so financing is significantly easier.

DC may have soul crushing traffic, but we do also have one of the nation's best transit networks. The Verizon Center is parked directly on top of one of the major hubs of the Metro system, and the city is incredibly walkable. You simply don't drive to Caps games ever.

The metro there is certainly great...if you happen to live by a stop. Which just jacks up the cost of your house even more than the already astronomical rate. Which is why although my office is up there I refuse to leave Raleigh.

The location of the Verizon center in the middle of Chinatown is interesting though. It sure beats the old Cap center. I'd prefer the PNC arena be downtown, or selfishly, in North Hills, but you can basically drive for 10 min from anywhere in the city to get to it and getting out isn't exactly a nightmare like other places.

Possibly true- but 10 years ago I was telling people "In 10 years Raleigh will be unlivable like Atlanta", but here we are 10 years later with enormous growth, and its still great. But if we get that Amazon HQ bid, look out!

We do need some kind of rail system, at least running from RTP to Raleigh and Durham.

they don't seem to be connecting hockey with the community. They've been there 20 years and I've heard of no players from that region making it anywhere. Its a win and people show up or lose and nobody shows up kind of thing. Minus the home games against popular teams.
