A big part of the problem is that defense takes much longer to develop. Had they neglected forwards, and the blue line was mostly set, the turnaround could be well on its way by now. But any picks on defense - barring a lottery stud that's ahead of the curve - won't even be hitting the ice for another few years, let alone making an impact.

Rebuilds should start on the back end and at center, then move to wing. Yet another reason to make a trade.

Wings fans are basically hoping for a miracle to arise out of an approach that has clearly failed this team for the last 8 years. Wings are objectively a worse team at the end of every season than they were at the end of the season before. 2013 was an anomaly. In order to acquire a top-pair D they would have to gut the forward core and replace one weakness with another.

If this team got 5 top ten picks, with a few of those being top 5,for the next 5 years while developing this core, they would have a shot at the cup.

As this team is now this core will be approaching UFA just as a lot of their old, bad, Band-Aids contracts expire, and they will have no shot at the cup within those 5 years, or immediately after those 5 years. When you have no access to top-line or top-pair players it becomes really hard to compete.

I like Dekeyser. He is a good defenseman. If you are looking at Dekeyser as your 1D now and going forward your team has problems.
Getting this team into the top 5 of the draft is no easy task.

The suggested strategy above shows how much people overstate the issues of this team. Playing Howard as our #1 is gonna tank the team? The guy seems to perform much, much better when he is the #1 than when he is the backup. Resting Kronner and Z will tank the team? Both were shadows of themselves the 2nd half of last season, we got into the playoffs anyway.
Playing Jurco, Frk and Pulkkinen will do it? All of them contain potential to break out if they get the opportunity.

Nah, trading Larkin and Mrazek for picks/prospects would be step 1. Those two alone are too good to tank with.
