Well, Lucic's final bonus is paid this July 1st. His actual contract drops to $4.5 Million while his cap hit remains $6 Million. The Oilers front-loaded the $$$ in this contract. That has to count for budget teams if they're thinking of trading for Lucic. The NYRs obviously are not a budget team.

Another 10 OA + Lucic trade hey? If this is the price I'd rather just hang on to Lucic for another year. See if he returns to 50 point form or even close. One more year off his contract and a 45-50 point campaign and the Oilers don't have to give up a top 10 pick. Bad for Rangers? They make out like bandits.
Literally before I clicked on the thread I already knew it was another shitty "10th overall HAS to be the sweetener for Lucic" type of thread followed by a shit return and the other fan base saying no, when they should take the highway robbery they just committed and run.

Plant drugs in Lucic's hockey bag for the first road game in the US before they pass through customs. Void contract. What LA did with Mike Richards.
No assets lost.

You're welcome, Chia :thumbu:

TO NYR:

10 OA
M. Lucic

TO EDM:

R. Spooner
39 OA (2nd round #8)

Would Edmonton ever consider this? Spooner is a streaky scorer who is RFA, so you can control him.
Rangers should take this and run.

eat 1/2 of lucics contract and drop the two picks

lucic at 3 mill is as valueable as spooner at 3 mill.

keeping that 10 oa is very important to the oilers future. even if they end up trading the player they pick. they need young tradable assets to start building their depth asap

honestly I think spooner would look pretty good with McDavid so its an interesting target for the oilers. I think lucic is a better player for a contender but spooner is probably better for the oilers.

as for the rangers... they might want to retain more of lucics salary and flip him. if lucic was a 2 mill cap hit he probably becomes very valuable to a contender. it was just a couple years ago LA gave up a first and martin jones for him. If lucic were to stay healthy for 40 games and put up 25 points he could be a super valuable trade chip at the second half of this season to a team that wants someone special for their playoff drive.

the key to lucics trade value... reduce his cap hit... and let him be healthy for half a season

Only way you get our 28th is if you add a 3rd rounder on your end. Some of the fans here seem to think that the track record for later round picks is not great anyway when your team picks them.

If it were up to me Edmonton would be pulling the trigger on that deal. Edmonton gets rid of Lucic's contract and still has a pick in the 1st round. Give Spooner a 1 year extension and if he craps the bed again cut him lose.

Anyone saying Rangers should take it and run are crazy. A 10th OA pick isnt worth a terrible contract like that.

yes, but we also have a lot of cap space and we could use some toughness that Lucic would bring.

It would be a good idea if we can include Brendan Smith in the deal.

Isn't Smith signed for 3 years and Lucic 5? I don't see the point in trading for a guy with a longer contract and who is less likely to be worth the money.

Not that I think Smith is going to have a massive turnaround or anything but he's more likely to be useful during his contract than Lucic.

The whole Lucic is tough thing is overblown btw. Have you watched him play for the Oilers? I'd hate for the Rangers to start going after players who specialize in toughness again. Didn't work well last time.

Considering how often Chia gets played on deals I would be angry with this. How about Zucc, Kreider, and DeAngelo for 10 Lucic Puljujarvi Klefbom and another Prospect
No from the Rangers

Also, something that Brooks noted in his article-apparently the Gorton has talked to Chia in a deal around Draistaitl+Lucic for Skjei but Chia (surprisingly) declined

Not sure Oilers owner will be willing to buy out Lucic in a couple years but I think alot of teams are looking forward to those compliance buyouts in 20/21. lol

Problem with Lucic(much like Ladd for my team) is their contracts are bonus heavy and I beleive if you buy the player out they get the full value of the bonus. League needs to stop that next CBA

Ok, I'll bite: Why?
If you don't want to have to pay big bonus money to guys you are buying out you have options: Don't sign guys to big bonus money and/or don't buy them out.

Why do we need to protect owners from making stupid deals. We have these hardcore laissez faire capitalists who believe in free markets and the invisible hand.... but HERE we need government protection from ourselves so that if we enter into a contract that we don't like we can just unilaterally decide not to honor it.

Makes total sense.

Edmonton is better off holding on to #10OA and lucic. Edmonton as a team didn’t have a good year. Keep the player and pick and see if everyone can turn it around.

Instead of living in the pass take a look at the last two years of drafting. We actually have so good young players on their way so this comment is mute

Wait, so you're saying instead of giving up 10th overall, the Oilers can just keep waiting year after year, burning Lucic's contract so they'd have to give up less?

Wow I guess that solves that problem.

I think anything that gives big market teams an advantage over small market teams should be gotten rid of. In this case buying out of bonuses ladden contracts. Beyond that I don't believe the amount a player gets in bonuses on July 1 should be more then the salary that player gets that season(so say if a player gets paid a 3M bonus on JUly 1, but only 1M during the seasons, that should be changed to a 2 and 2).

These 10th overall + Lucic deals are pointless for a couple reasons:

1) Oilers are unlikely to pay that high premium to trade Lucic
2) Lucic has a 3 million July 1st bonus, lowering the amount owed by the future team (hopefully making it easier)
3) It's been publicized by many that Oilers are unlikely to trade 10th overall
