Now when Lidstrom got his 5th norris, how far can he climb?

Last I checked, the United States isn't the only country in North America.

Nice sweeping generalization.

Okay I admit it wasn't fair. Doug Harvey was great but Lidstrom has played in a more competitive era. Can anyone argue against that?

yea because the NHL were more competitive with 6 teams, no euros and poor equipment and conditioning of the players :sarcasm:

NHL didn't expand to 12 teams until 1967

Buddy, think about what you just said. If their are six teams in the worlds top league that leaves room for the top 120 players roughly. Now that there are 30 teams, that leaves room for the top 600+ players! Your telling me thats better competition?!

Also your equipment and conditioning argument is week as its not like Orr and Shore were skating around in Vapor 30s themsevles blasting shots with one peices. It was a level playing ground, as it is now.

Q1: Can he reach 7 Norris trophies?

A: Depends on his competition. If Pronger cant stay healthy and the younger guys like Bouwmeester cant take the next step soon enough then sure.

Q2: Can he become the second best defenseman of all time?

A: No.

Q3: Can he become the best European ever?

A: If he changes his name to Dominic Hasek people might mistake him for it.

Jagr is, and always will be the best European.

1. I'd give him a 20% chance.
2. No Chance
3. No Chance

I would have Lidstrom ninth or tenth. I can't see him cracking the top five. His competition has been the weakest of any of the top ten defencemen ever. Who was Lidstrom's biggest competition for the Norris? Look at Park. Three top ten defencemen of all time. He had Orr, Robinson and Potvin. Lidstrom had Niedermeyer and Pronger.

All this stuff about if Lidstrom was Canadian he would be rated higher is garbage.

So more teams equals better competition? That makes no sense whatsoever. Give me 10 Euros that would have played in the NHL in the 50's. The fact is there so few Euros that would have actually made the NHL in the 50's. During the 50's the NHL had the best players in the world.

okay North American then. It's the same thing. You all have a bias for North American players.

Agree completely. There's nothing worse than making judgements about someone based solely on their nationality, and Transported Upstater ought to be ashamed of himself.

What can I do? Is there anyone out there who can help me get rid of my bias? :(

Sorry mate, it's in your blood. You love football, porno, books about war, and hating Europeans.

Remember that time you claimed the Care Bears could beat up the Smurfs? You're out of control, dude.

****. So I'm screwed?

And those ****ing Smurfs are ASKING FOR IT! :teach:

Have to agree. A great defenceman, but only started winning Norris's when the other consistantly great defencemen in the league (Bourque, Chelios, Leetch, MacInnis) began to age and retire.

Don't mess with those Smurfs. They're all antsy in the their pantsies, ready to snap at a moments notice. Heard of blue balls? Well...

All I'm saying is that if there was only one chick in your town, you'd better be a damn good fighter if you want to get any.

Wings fans know he has been one of, if not the best player in league for 10 years now. He's got a far smaller ego than Hasek or Jagr, and his teammates love him for it.

I would say he is the best Euro ever. He will finish behind Orr and Harvey on the all time d-list

He's got his work cut out for him to catch Bourque, who has a ridiculous 19 Allstar selections. And I'm not sure catching Eddie Shore and his 4 Hart trophies is realistic.

Here are a couple of questions regarding Lidstrom.

1) Can he reach Doug Harvey's 7 Norris Trophies?
2) Can he actually become the 2nd best defenseman alltime? (after Orr)
3) Can he become the best european player ever in the NHL

1) Can he? yes. Will he? I'm doubtful.
2) He'd need at least 2 Harts before I'd even concider it. But, it's not as far out of the realm of possibility as some think, Lidstrom will likely prove the player of the decade, and Orr in the 70's and Shore in the 30's are the only other defenceman to have that honour. But, with Shore's 4 Harts, I really think 3rd is the best Lidstrom could achieve.
3) Maybe, Hasek is, IMO, the player of the 90's, and if Lidstrom is the player of the 00's, then they'd be competing for that title. Personally, I favour Hasek.

IMO, Lidstrom is making a serious charge for the top 5, he's on par with Robinson and Kelly, but could strike at Bourque and Potvin.

Excuse ME? Look at my nick.
I am NOT prejudiced and I'm very offended that you said that.
I love Canada, I love Canadian Players, but I also love players from other countries too. Kurri is my favorite player of all time.

Do you think he was useless because he wasn't a Swede?
