They're not gone for good. It's very likely they return in 2018-19. There's an interested buyer and the league is okay with the buyer. It just would have taken too long to dot the Is and cross the Ts so they decided to go dark this season and complete the deal then look forward to 2018-19.

Yeah, I wouldnt say the Cottonmouths are gone for good. Nine times out of ten when a team says its suspending operations for a season they never return. Several teams like the New Mexico Scorpions, Texas Wildcatters, Mississippi Sea Wolves, and the Cincinnati Cyclones all suspended operations for a season (and in the case of Cincinnati and Mississippi two seasons)manage to return from their suspensions. I think Columbus will be back on its feet in no time. I do think its safe to call off the search party for the Louisiana IceGators though. I think they are gone for good.

"The league is in the final stages of securing new ownership in order to bring the team back for the 2018-2019 season.â€

Taken straight from the end of the league press release

Looks like the deal is kinda complicated. This article makes it seem as though it's the same franchise but the sale of the Cottonmouths branding is not happening. So same team that is now having an identity crisis.

Here are the prop lines as set by CrazyEddie's hockey casino:

Fan outrage at new team nickname: 1-10
Fan outrage when Cottonmouths name is dropped: 2-5
The new owner backs out of the deal before a new name is announced: 2-1
The new owner backs out of the deal after a new name is announced: 3-1
Team shuts down after name announced but before training camp: 4-1
Home opener attendance under 1000: 7-1
Home opener attendance under 1500: 2-1
Home opener attendance under 2500: 1-1
Team folds during 2017-18 regular season: 6-1
Team plays one season and then folds: 4-1
Team plays one game in a second season under the same owner: 20-1
Team plays one game in a third season under the same owner: 125-1

Combs told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Jenkins doesn't own the team yet. He has applied, but has not been approved. He also doesn't have a lease for the Columbus Civic Center.

Good luck, dude.

So standard practice? It's pretty common for the league to wait to approve an applicant until they have a lease agreement in place. And vice versa, it's only an agreement until to league application is finalized. At the point where these are both done, then the lease deal is finalized.

Come on, Eddie. Someone who claims to know as much about minor league hockey as you should know that's how it works.

He's getting way ahead of himself, [MOD]. He shouldn't be openly doing PR until the deal is done. As a communications professional, you should know that.

Oh, I fully understand that. [MOD] I was just calling out what appeared to be a lack of understanding of the process of getting a lease and joining a league. You made no mention of this as bad from a PR angle.

In fact, I'll admit he's doing it very, very poorly. That logo he says he designed himself? Yeah ... totally false.

I think he may have looked at how public the Cottonmouths situation and the Birmingham situation was and thought that was standard practice. If that's the case, it's another example of how unprepared he is.

I got friends in Columbus who were very close to the the Cottonmouths and this deal to them seems hard to grab hold of. Too much talk about spending money, when all they want is a winning hockey team, They said that will bring back the fans, and also the not happy about a name change either.
