Why was the WLAF team named the "Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks"? Or is that why they failed?

TBH I had never even heard of that team or league before and had to google it to figure out what you were talking about. I lived in Charlotte at the time and never heard a single word about that team.

Also that is one of the overall worst names I’ve ever heard for a sports team

Seattle Center director Robert Nellams retiring

Breaking away from your spirited discussion about team names, everyone, to bring you a piece of news. The head of the Seattle Center, Robert Nellams, who has been a player in the arena discussions, has announced his retirement, so it will be interesting to see who takes over this role as this process continues at the Key. Nellams is out at the end of May.

Why doesn't Portland have a team and why would they not come in with seattle? Seems weird to me that they cudnt get a team with a relatively young arena with a basketball tenant in the Pacific northwest. Especially with the winterhawks being such a big team in the chl.

Like many hockey backwaters in the U.S., there's a rabid, but small, number of hockey fans. It's a relatively small city, with few head offices. Nike has shown zero interest in the sport since their abandoned takeover of Bauer. The fans that attend Winterhawks games could not afford NHL tickets. The Trail Blazers are stitched into the city's cultural fabric. A competing sport would have a tough battle competing for entertainment dollars. Blazers owner Paul Allen has no interest in hockey.

No chance.

That kind of ignores the following:

(1) More demonstrated fans than Seattle at every shared level.

(2) Gentrification issue... Portland has an influx of people with money. Not to the level of Seattle or San Francisco, but one need only compare housing prices to, say, Kansas City.

(3) Nike isn’t that interested in hockey, per se, but if Portland gets a team, they’ll find a way to look like they’re leading.

Now, Allen... that’s the problem.

Allen I think is the only real reason a team is not already there, I agree with you.

Well, he controls the arena, much like Les Alexander did in Houston. If he doesn't want an NHL team, there isn't going to be one.

Economics in Portland, don't make merely being a tenant in the Moda Centre in Portland, a sound business proposition.

That's why, the situation in Phx/AZ is what it is. NBA owner doesn't want to share an arena with the Coyotes, to ensure that they control all of the revenue streams. NBA knows that the NHL team has to make a decision as to their future very soon. Sun's lease still runs for a few more years. They can simply out wait the Coyotes.

Allen could have gotten an expansion team back in the late 90's with Minny/Nas/Atl (likely would have beaten the CBS application) if Allen really wanted a team. He doesn't, and never has expressed interest. With the NBA and NHL seasons running basically concurrently, economics might not be the best to have an NHL team.

oh i think Allen could be interested in a team, the issue is the cost for the team. 650m isn't something he would agree to.

A break from the Portland discussion - and I BTW second Tommy on Allen - he'd be happy with a team for the right price (i.e. if the league wants to sell him the Coyotes for $150-$200 million, he'd probably listen. He'll not want in at the going expansion rate).

Chris Daniels, in Tampa, interviewed Vegas exec Kerry Bubolz, and he seems optimistic about the NHL's chances in Seattle:

'It's the perfect time' for NHL to Seattle, says team exec

At the end of the story, the station notes that additional interviews will be posted throughout the coming week, so expect a lot of new content here from CD5's trip to the ASW.

nhl will screw Seattle over, easing up on the expansion draft protection lists; but they will let the franchise participate in the nhl draft of juniors the offseason leading to their first season. They'll be assigned the 32nd pick in each round. My prediction.

That is not going to happen.

It's already been stated that the expansion draft rules will be the same as what Vegas got.

There is no need to ''predict'' what so ever. The league confirmed Seattle will get the same expansion rules as Vegas did...the same rules.
