I feel like we mostly know what we have with the headliners in this group, and we mostly know that the invitees are cannon fodder, so there isn't a whole lot of mystery in the roster this year. There are only a couple of guys who I'll be watching with real question marks in mind:

Henman - He's one of our more borderline prospects, where you can't quite tell whether he's a serious asset in the pipeline. I'll be interested to see how he stands up in a live-fire situation against guys who have good NHL careers ahead of them.

Hoefenmayer - This is a guy who's maybe flying under our radar a bit because he came to us as an undrafted invitee, but he was a 4th round pick for Arizona before re-entering the draft. He was also the 4th highest scoring defenseman in the OHL last year, granted as a 20yo. At rookie camp he laid into a couple of guys physically with enough ill-intent that it stood out from the group. There are questions about his skating and his defensive ability, but this is a guy who is now having to fight for his future and has the upside to potentially be a Torey Krug kind of "oh yeah that guy was in our camp one year" story. I'm going to be watching him super closely for signs of a guy who's taking the steps needed to get that ELC.

Yeah I realize that but normally you don't see CHL players go directly from the CHL to university unless they have no pro hockey prospects at all. For example below average 4th liners or bottom pairing d-men, or players who bounce back and forth from a CHL team and lower level junior leagues. Or maybe he just doesn't want to do the SPHL/ECHL/very low level European league thing of riding buses and making poverty wages, which I could understand.
Honestly it somewhat surprises me that more players don't take this route if they aren't signed by at least an AHL team following their over-age season. Goalie might be something of a different beast but again if you don't have ridiculous size (Darling) even if you do sign with an ECHL or lower team you're not going to end up on an NHL teams radar shy of being the next Hasek. And even there the NHL is usually pretty good at finding those undersized guys with freak athleticism (Ned, Quick).

Does he meet eligibility to play in the League?

8.9 Eligibility for Play in the League. No Player shall be eligible for play in the League unless he:

(a) had been claimed in the last Entry Draft, or was ineligible for claim under Section 8.4, or;

(b) had been eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft, but was unclaimed, and:

(i) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was age 20 or older at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the next NHL Season.

(ii) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such Player had signed an NHL try-out form, which was signed and registered with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).

(iii) had played hockey outside of North America in the prior season and was age 22 or older at the time of the last Entry Draft and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and the commencement of the next NHL Season.

(iv) The words "eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft" in subparagraph (b) above mean "eligible for claim in all rounds of the last Entry Draft." The words "the prior season" in subparagraph (i), (ii) and (iii) above mean "a full season prior to the last Entry Draft."

Also they may be a certain signing window that only allows the signings in the summer, but I can't remember if it was in relation to this. Me stupid. The signing window between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and the commencement of the next season is defined exactly in my quoted bit.

He's a (b)(ii). When does Major Juniors commence? edit: Answer myself: WHL September 20.

I think they can and there's even the try-out option for the training camp.

But it has to happen now, after the WHL/NHL season start he'll be an unsignable draft-bait again.

correction to Correction: potentially he can be signed even after that, he just isn't allowed to play in the league until the next summer when he'll (probably) be ineligible to be claimed as per 8.4 (and thusly becomes eligible to play by 8.9(a)). Though there may be some clause elsewhere that prevents such signing of an ineligible player to an SPC.

The player will explicitly be a draft-related UFA for the time he's allowed to be signed, and we must e contrario assume that he has no right to negotiate and sign a SPC outside the window stated in 8.9(b):

10.1 said:
(d) Draft-Related Unrestricted Free Agents.
(i) Any Player not eligible for claim in any future Entry Draft pursuant to this Agreement and not on a Club's Reserve List shall be an Unrestricted Free Agent. Further, any Player eligible for claim in the Entry Draft, but who was unclaimed, shall be an Unrestricted Free Agent subject to the provisions of Section 8.9(b).

(ii) Each Player referred to in subsection (d)(i) above shall,
during the period of his Free Agency in accordance with Section 8.9(b), if applicable, be completely free to negotiate and sign an SPC with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate and sign an SPC with such Player, without penalty or restriction subject to the provisions of Article 9 of this Agreement, if applicable, and without being subject to any Right of First Refusal, Draft Choice Compensation or any other compensation or equalization obligation of any kind.

Let's grab him now just to show everyone we can sign all kinds of UFAs left and right!
