YEah and counter that with what they're reporting now;

The consensus reached on an NHLPA conference call may suggest the lockout battle is far from over. A source told Sportsnet the players are as resolute as ever on avoiding a salary cap.

"There's no change in our position," the source explained to Sportsnet.

Interestingly enough, another source within the NHL said the league's stance on cost certainty remains unchanged as well.

Why would sportsnet contradict itself with this 8-year-deal crap and now the citation that the lock is long from over?

If we believe the lock isnt over, we're supposed to be more surprised when it does end this weekend.

Both sides are going to keep talking their smack until this is over. Don't listen to what anyone says about what they will or will not accept

The 8 year deal makes sense. The first 4 years allows the greedy players to make as much as they can before they leave the league, then everything will be in order. If they did do this, the salary roll back will be much much smaller.

I hope there's some way to factor in pre-luxury tax payrolls when the switch happens four years down the line. I would hate to see the big spenders sign huge frontloaded contracts in the last year of the non-taxed NHL, thus maintaining a financial edge through the whole 8 years. Perhaps for any existing contract entering the tax phase, the average of the whole contract could be taken for tax purposes rather than just that single year.

Exactly. Don't believe the rhetoric. Why would one side come out and publicly say "Well, we actually change our minds now, the other side was right all along..."

Of course they'll say they support their stance, right up until they sign the agreement.

Not just Toronto. I pick on them b/c the joke of a GM, JF JR, overpays guys so much it's not even funny. After Bettman tells him to control it a bit for the upcoming lockout this guy says "Who cares. Were the leafs and we will run how we want".
