The Athletic ranks all 31 NHL arenas

NHL arena rankings: The best and worst places to see a game, as rated by fans

20. Boston (TD Garden): 7.63

Atmosphere: 8.28 (17th)
Sight lines: 8.29 (27th)
Food options: 6.6 (25th)
Convenience: 7.09 (24th)
Location: 8.64 (10th)
Appearance: 7.53 (22nd)
Unique touches: 6.96 (18th)

“It ain’t the old Gahden, but it does the job.”

“There is no option about the seats. The new seats are so small, nothing else matters, going to a Bruins game sucks.”

“TD Garden is a perfectly adequate building for hockey. If you remove the team, its history, and the tribal intensity of its fanbase, it would be just another arena. When it comes to accessibility, it’s half-10, half-0, because one of the public transit options will drop you off literally beneath the ice surface, and the subway stops right across the street, but you’re absolutely out of your mind if you want to drive in and park there. There is no bad seat in the house as far as sight lines, which is a big plus. I gave it a 4 in ‘unique touches’ in honor of Bobby Orr, whose flying statue sits outside the doors, but also because other than Bobby and the many, many banners both the Bruins and Celtics have accrued, there’s nothing super special about the building itself.”

“Great arena with plenty of nostalgic touches. Good food and drink. Not cheap, but nothing in the area is. Made some nice upgrades recently. Would get 10 for area bars if The Fours hadn’t closed.”

“While the Jacobs have improved many aspects of the Garden, losing The Fours automatically knocks an already marginal bar scene down a notch. The arena does a nice job with the in game stuff, but it’s not all that dissimilar from what I’ve seen in other places. The Garden has a solid showing, but there’s nothing really exceptional there. They make good use of the Bruins history, which is a solid move.”

That "sight lines" ranking confused me - until I read the comment about seating. I'm assuming folks decided to use that category to go off on Jacobs for his latest money making scheme - squeezing more seats in while pretending that they're just as big as before.

But I'll be honest - I've almost never had a bad sight line, and I'm Marchy-sized.

Harsh on the food options, IMO, but points for kicking Jacobs where he hurts the most - right in the Delaware South. Food is overpriced, but that's the norm for the big leagues - I think it's a little worse on the wallet than Fenway, but not significantly so. For options, I actually think the Garden beats Fenway - especially if you're counting "surrounding food", and resurrect The Fours.

Unique touches could be bumped if they made 3 or 4 rotating exhibits on the concourse sponsored by The Sports Museum. They're going in the right direction with the new bar area they put behind 301.

I don't understand the point of this article. Is it simply fans ranking their own stadiums? Hardly an unbiased opinion, no?

I've been to 11 of the stadiums on this list. When I saw Madison Square Garden at #6, this list lost most of its credibility to me.....

XCel Energy in St Paul is way overrated as well.

It doesn't need to be said, this isn't a ranking of arenas, but rather a ranking of how happy fans are with their own arenas.

Looking at the top: the ONLY thing Nashville has going for it is the location. I was so pumped to see a game there and came out rather disappointed. Some glaring things about TD in this article: sight lines are exceptional and the convenience should be WAY higher (taking the T is incredibly easy).

Here is a post I made a while back regarding arenas I've been to:

I've been to a handful: Boston (obv), Montreal, LA, Anaheim, and Nashville. I hear GREAT things about Minn, Vegas, and Tampa Bay. I hope to hit all three soon (pandemic pending...).

Boston excluded, here's how I'd go:

1. Montreal (2007): I was blown away by this place. It was massive, steep, loud, fun, etc. Amenities were significantly better than TD Garden at that time and the location was superb. Never had more fun at a non-Bruins NHL game than I did there.
2. LA (2012 and 2014): What you expect in LA with the in game production. Really liked the sound in there. Fans in the balcony are better than the fans in the lower bowl, but solid atmosphere all around. If you're in the balcony, you feel really far from the action due to the luxury boxes. Amenities were also quite good. Convenient location.
3. Nashville (season opener this year): Location can't get better. The building really is "blah", but the new video board was nice. I am going to get absolutely crushed saying this: the atmosphere was lacking and everything felt forced. I've been to hundreds of college games at many arenas and was expecting something similar, but it wasn't close. I'm going to give it another shot in the future, hopefully for a playoff game where I know it's different.
4. Anaheim (many times between 2012-2015): The first time I went there it was in real tough shape. Clearly hadn't had any updates since the mid-90s. It did get some minor renovations through those years which definitely helped. I'm also not a fan of not walking to games. Don't care where you are, you're driving here. There is absolutely no atmosphere here. I will say this: the fans here are amongst the nicest and most knowledgable of any place above it. Always have a good time talking hockey with whoever is sitting next to me there.

" There is no bad seat in the house as far as sight lines, which is a big plus. "

Ranks the Bruins 27th....

Atmosphere simply cannot be 17th, even with how quiet a weeknight game can be.

Food, convenience, appearance, and unique touches are all deserving of low rankings as TD Garden is an uninspiring concrete building with a few cosmetic renovations.

I've never been to a game in Boston. :(

But at least I've seen them play in person twice. :)

Well only one entrance that is clogged like hell is going to be a huge issue going forward. The facelift didn't change anything for the better. And of course they will get more excessive with the searches for whatever reason. You have to deduct at on of points for that.

Not enough bathrooms. Loge is not steep enough for hockey. Seat replacement was a debacle.

Its definitely one of the oldest in the NBA/NHL at this point pretty much everything older has been replaced.
