It was WNBA Finals to be fair. And more people get ESPN.

Its like comparing NHL Playoff ratings and MLB regular season ratings and laughing at baseball for losing to hockey,

No, it's not like that at all, really.

I'd love to know which 900,000 people were actually watching that WNBA game. I'm going to guess it was on 885,999 televisions in bars with no one actually watching and not in any homes.

First off. I don't buy into tv ratings. They all lie and are made up. Nielson is a bit better than Numeris up in Canada. Did you know that SportsNet does not have accurate television ratings based on Numeris not updating their formula from 2016? It is true.

SportsNet not being on the basic cable package on majority of national companies is part of it. So if you have TSN and say are a big CFL fan and you watch all of these sports on TSN. You would be automatically part of the rating for SportsNet Blue Jays games and NHL Hockey night In Canada games.

Most if not all networks have been doing their own ratings w/ advertisers as they have had enough of the rating blunders/mistakes. NBC/CBS/CTV(bell) have been doing their own since 2014 and lately have increased this strategy.

In the USA, Nielson is trying to recover and trying to implement new formulas including watching at airports/sports bars/ 4+ viewing which in Canada is only 1+/PVR recordings.

Hockey is a very popular sport in the USA but the NHL problem is they are limited on radio/tv due to them not signing exclusive agreements with ESPN and FOX SPORTS. And do you blame them?
ESPN is a horrible network and have invested in NBA which is part in why other professionals laugh at espn for their shoving basketball down peoples throats. FOX SPORTS is a chaotic network that is trying to find a true identity. Are they a College Sports station? A regional sports station? A talk sports station?

NHL has always been about local tv markets and the strategy works fine. Remember. Say the Rangers make the Stanley Cup finals. Majority of New Yorkers are not going to be watching the games on NBC. They will watch MSG.

Great post except for the bold. Pretty sure the Stanley Cup Finals are exclusive to NBC, there are no local feeds (MSG in that case).

I know MSG could broadcast like all other U.S local broadcasters can in the playoffs. I know MSG has broadcasted Stanley Cup finals in the past w/ Rangers in it so it could be true they do not do this any longer.

But besides that. Teams like New York and Los Angeles in the playoffs will have their fan base watch on their local network and not on NBC or NBCSN.

Local broadcasters (in the US) are only allowed to cover and broadcast the first round of the NHL playoffs. All other rounds are exclusive to the NBC family of channels.

The last time a local broadcaster could show SCF games was probably 1994.

The Los Angeles' Dodgers' 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros in a very fast Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday night took a big hit locally opposite a Buffalo Sabres game and some popular Tuesday night entertainment programming,

The Sabres' 1-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings had a 7.3 rating on cable's NBCSN.

The World Series game, which was played in about two and a half hours, had a 5.5 rating on WUTV (Channel 29), the local Fox affiliate. That was about half of the 10.4 rating a year ago for Game 1 of the World Series between Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs.

Same could be said of the Devils / Lightning game earlier this month. It was up against the ALCS game featuring Yankees versus Astros, as many Devils fans are also Yankees fans.
