Honestly they do have a problem with prospects but players drafted after the 3rd round have almost no chance of making it to the NHL so i kinda get it. However the top 5 should all be NHL ready or a point or two away from it. The next 15 should be NHL ready after 1 year. After that it should take 3-4 years to make the NHL if they are going to. I still have a problem where 1st over all picks are years away from being NHL ready. I am like 8 years deep into franchise and the 1st overall was a 70 over all defense defender. He didnt hit 78 for 3 years.

If you look at the first round of the 2016 draft there's defenitely not 20 guys who are NHL ready now.

I really don't get how everyone is having troubles with developing. Mine are going fine. In 2019 I drafted a left winger that was like 59 and in two years he was 80 with top 6 potential.

I think a few people don't realize 77 overall is the new 80.

In this game 74-76 is a substitute level player. Someone with 77 would be a established NHL'er. Someone you typically wouldn't healthy scratch.

Exactly. It plays in huge. A 75 overall centre playmaker for instance, became my third line centre. He he had all 80s in stats except for checking, aggression, etc. He was basically what the 82-84 overall was last year.

I saw few 80 ovrl generated prospect. On my 2020 draft, top 3 guys were 80,81,78...so they were nhl ready and could fit on a weak team top 6. Generated prospects seems alot better than last year. I like the fact that u can find some low elit potential on round 5-7 and sometimes you only have a top 9 fwd on the first round. Some of them will bust, others will be steals exactly like real life.

TRADE ALERT: Rangers, Jets Make Deadline Deal

markov-1-620x349.jpg

:rangers acquire: 2019 4th, 2019 7th, 2020 3rd
:jets acquire: Andrei Markov

Analysis: This is the first time in a long time that the New York Rangers have been sellers at the Trade Deadline. I don’t expect them to do too much more today because they still have an outside shot at the playoffs and a good team overall, but injuries have really hurt them (both literally and figuratively) this season, so I wouldn’t expect a blowup. Markov is a depth defenseman who slot in nicely as the number 5 defenseman in the Jets. The Rangers pick up a few picks here so not a bad trade for either side.

BREAKING: Rangers Call Up 2 Players After Markov Trade

The New York Rangers have called up defenseman Sean Day after trading Andrei Markov to the Jets earlier. Day is a 21 year old defenseman and is expected to make his NHL debut later this evening against Ottawa. They also called up forward Dan Catenacci leading me to believe they’ll be sending out a forward soon. If a forward is traded, Catenacci will likely play tonight as well as Lias Andersson is still out injured.

TRADE ALERT: Rangers Move Out Another Depth Piece

03032016-jokinen-jussi-620.jpg

:rangers acquire: 2019 4th, 2020 7th
:sharks acquire: Jussi Jokinen

Analysis: As Trade Deadline day winds to a close, the Rangers shipped Jussi Jokinen to San Jose in exchange for a couple draft picks. Good deal for San Jose because he’s more than a rental (he has 1 more year after 2018/19) and they got him for a 4th and a 7th which is pretty cheap. His production isn’t bad, but the only negatives are his age (not a huge factor since he’s signed for only 2 years) and his cap hit, which is $2.75M.

Exactly. It plays in huge. A 75 overall centre playmaker for instance, became my third line centre. He he had all 80s in stats except for checking, aggression, etc. He was basically what the 82-84 overall was last year.

I did some experiments on NHL 17, and was able to figure out what each potential level means. So, assuming that they decreased the overalls by 3 on general (which I've read in a couple of places), this is what they translate to in NHL 18:

90+ (franchise forward/defenseman)
84-89 (elite forward/defenseman)
81-83 (top 6 forward/top 4 defenseman)
77-80 (top 9 forward/top 6 defenseman)
74-76 (bottom 6 forward/7th defenseman)
68-73 (AHL top 6 forward/AHL top 2 defenseman)
63-67 (AHL bottom 6 forward/AHL top 4 defenseman)

Now, in reality AHL bottom 6 forward/AHL top 4 defenseman potential is actually an ECHL level player. This is why you never see anyone with lower than AHL top 6 forward/AHL top 2 defenseman in the draft. Meanwhile, bottom 6 forward/7th defenseman practically means a substitute level player.

So my conclusion is:

81-83 (2nd line forward/top 4 defenseman or a complemantary 1st line forward/top pairing D)
79-80 (Decent to good 3rd line forward/good #5 d-man or poor #4)
77-78 (Decent to good 4th liner/3rd pairing d-man)
74-76 (NHL substitute)
68-73 (AHL player)

Now there are always exceptions. One guy with 77 overall might be better suited than someone with 80 in a top six role, depending on how they are built.

And if you have have a weak team, or if your team is top heavy so you can't afford good depth, those 74-76 guys might end up being regulars on your 4th line.

But if your team looks something like this ...

82 - 90 - 87
84 - 83 - 81
79 - 80 - 79
77 - 78 - 77
76
74

88 - 82
81 - 83
77 - 79
76

85
80

... Congrats, you are probably the top favourite to win the Stanley Cup.

Created the Seattle Thunderbirds and used the expansion draft to grab the best players available with a view to making some big moves. It's easy to put together a really good defense core through the expansion draft.

After making my moves at the entry draft the team looks like this:

Grabner - Duchene - Brown
D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Berglund
Laughton - Letestu - Stempniak
Nieto - Dzingel - Smith-Pelly

Ekholm - Vatanen
Brodin - Myers
de Haan - Demers

Grubauer
Korpisalo

Think I can be competitive right out of the gate which is what I wanted but also have some good trade pieces should things not pan out...

Was he signed or unsigned?

if a prospect is junior eligible and under 72 overall I don't sign him. If he's from Europe and above 60 I sign him just in case he subs into the AHL team. In some cases, I've gotten lucky. A 66 overall Euro for example, slotting into a weak AHL team seems to develop a lot faster.

I think playing time is a big factor, which I generally try to give a lot of AHL games to prospects. Not for development, just because I like seeing stat history hahah

Playoffs Update (2018/19)

RESIGNING: Rangers Extend 3 Key Players

9660334-ryan-mcdonagh-nhl-winnipeg-jets-new-york-rangers.jpg

The New York Rangers announced today that they have re-signed 3 important pending free agents. Ryan McDonagh was signed to a 4 year, $4.975M deal, which is pretty solid for the Rangers. It’s only a $275K raise from his (already cheap) previous deal and will bring him to his mid 30s when his steep decline will likely begin. Zuccarello was extended for 4 years as well at $3.975M per year, which is another good deal for the Rangers. He’s getting paid $525K less than his previous contract and it will take him to his mid to late 30s. Finally, Pavel Buchnevich agreed to a 2 year, bridge contract that will pay him $3.5M. The Rangers want to see if he’s worth a big investment before pouring a lot of money into him.

March 10, 2019

CALL-UP: Rangers Call Up Rookie

The New York Rangers have called up 19 year old Filip Chytil from Hartford due to injuries to both Lias Andersson and Zemgus Girgensons. Chytil was the Rangers 1st round pick (#21 overall) in 2017 and tonight will be his first regular season NHL game. He is not expected to be up with the team long and will likely be sent back down when those two are healthy again.

RESIGNING: Rangers Re-Sign Meier

r960-a6f12edbae2321c69699ca641c9ebdcd.jpg

Timo Meier has signed a long term deal to stay with the New York Rangers. It is an 8 year contract, with an AAV of $3.975M. So Meier obviously looking for some long term financial stability, as this deal will take him until he’s 30. The Rangers took a risk. This contract could end up being a huge steal (if Meier becomes a top player and the cap keeps going up) or it could be pretty bad (if Meier gets hurt often or his play declines), because of the length. But still, with a cap hit of just under $4M per season, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t develop great. Good deal for both sides at the moment in my opinion, and as for the long term, we’ll have to wait and see.

I had a roster with similar ratings finished worst in the division in year 4 after grinding very carefully to build the roster without completely burying myself

Also weird when building a team the create a team jerseys are still Reebok

To be fair EA's games is mostly a lottery. I can't find it now, but I made a post in some NHL 17 thread showing my cup winning team there. On paper it was horrible.

Because I edited players manually, my players were generally worse than the opposition (basically the overalls that EA started using this year). But after a few years into franchise mode, the opposing teams would replace their guys who were below 80 with prospects who had surpassed them.

Meanwhile I kept any guy who was performing for my team, no matter what their overall was. Then I ran into severe injury problems, and when I won the cup less than half my team was above 80 overall (in a game where 80 typically was the line for an NHL'er).

And my "awful" team won despite that I only played every 5th game in the regular season, and only every 3rd game in the playoffs. The rest I simmed.

So to sum it up, don't put too much stock into overalls. Build your team with guys who perform.

Me and my buddy played 8-9 seasons with Boston in another franchise mode. Frank Vatrano, who never reached more than 79 overall, would constantly score 20+ goals and 50+ points for our team. He scored 37 goals one season. We had to pay him like $5 mil more than he asked for just to make the game realistic, cus he would basically settle for league minimum lol.

Anybody else have a glitch where they can't start up a new franchise mode without the game crashing? If so, how do I fix it?

I have said that for years. I find no fun in a prebuilt team and live to build "My Team" from scratch. There are so many things to look at when placing a guy on a line to see if he will perform well and OVR isn't one of them. I'm a big fan of going through all stats to see what players are. Maybe if I have time I will write a little on how to find the studs.

Im curious, is there anyway to improve your scouts like in previous games? I noticed it said improve scouting to increase accuracy but I havent found this yet in the newer style menu gm/franchise modes.

That's weird. It crashed for me too at the same point, but it DID save my stuff.

I went back in and clicked Franchise mode and can't see anywhere to load a previous file, just all the regular options that are there at the beginning. I did go past at least one 'Save' option, though.

Montreal acquires: Leo Komarov, 2019 3rd
Dallas acquires: Noah Juulsen, Jeremy Gregoire

NY Islanders acquire: Martin Hanzal
Los Angeles acquires: Jonathan Bernier, 2019 3rd

Tampa Bay acquires: Chris Tanev, Brandon Pirri, 2019 5th
Florida acquires: T. Raddysh, 2020 2nd, 2019 6th

Pittsburgh acquires: Jake Muzzin
Los Angeles acquires: Filip Gustavsson, 2020 1st

:rangers acquire: Brendan Lemieux
:jets acquire: Dan Catenacci, Brandon Crawley

Analysis: The Rangers took the chance to acquire former 1st round pick Brendan Lemieux as soon as they saw the Winnipeg had him on the block. They got him for a pretty good price: a career AHLer/fringe NHL player and an unsigned 22 year old who hadn’t developed much since the Rangers drafted him in 2017. Chris Drury has shown to be the type of GM to take a chance on guys who were once rated high, but who haven’t developed as well as some had thought and are still young. He likes the low risk, potentially high reward type players, and Lemieux is one of those for sure.

:rangers acquire: 2019 7th
:avs acquire: Brandon Halverson

Analysis: The Rangers now have 2 NHL goalies, 2 goalies with fringe starter potential, and a future AHL starter, so Halverson kind of got lost in the mix. At one point, he was going to be the guy to take over for Lundqvist, but Sheshtyorkin has taken hold of that title and now there’s two prospects who could back him up at some point. Halverson gets a fresh start and Colorado takes a flyer on a goalie who could maybe turn it around and still pan out.

Top 10 Free Agents:

Jake Gardiner|D|28|84|Vancouver Canucks|3 Years/$5.075M AAV
Derick Brassard|C|31|83|Nashville Predators|4 Years/$4.6M AAV

Trades:

:rangers acquire: 2020 1st, 2020 3rd, 2020 4th, 2020 5th, 2020 6th
:stars acquire: Mats Zuccarello, Brendan Gallagher

Analysis: This is very interesting and leads me to believe one of two things about the Rangers: they were either so disappointed at missing the playoffs last season that they've decided to rebuild (which seems silly because they still have a good group when healthy) or they’re clearing cap to target a free agent. Stars become even more of an offensive powerhouse and the Rangers clear some cap and add a few picks.

:rangers acquire: 2020 2nd, 2020 3rd, 2020 4th
:nashville acquire: Henrik Lundqvist ($1M retained)

Analysis: Another somewhat puzzling deal here. I don’t think Sheshtyorkin is ready to start on a contending team yet, so I firmly believe they are either rebuilding or targeting some big name free agents as I mentioned above.

:rangers acquire: Shea Theodore, 2020 4th, 2020 5th, 2020 6th
:vegas acquire: Kevin Shattenkirk

Analysis: This one makes some more sense. Vegas goes with the proven commodity (as their current defense group is just awful) to anchor the back end, while the Rangers pick up a younger, more unproven player. Theodore however put up only 7 less points than Shattenkirk, is 7 years younger, and about $4M cheaper.

Rangers Signings:

Player Name|Position|Age|Overall|Potential|Contract|Notes

Kerby Rychel|LW|24|77|Medium Top 9 F|2 Years/$1.225M AAV| RFA - No comp. To TOR

Rangers FA Analysis: Yet again, the Rangers scooped up the biggest free agent available. They had to move out contracts to make everything work cap-wise, but that also helped them recoup some of the picks they had to send to Toronto as compensation for Marner. Not only did they get the best free agent, but they got 2 of the top 3 and 3 of the top 7. Marner and Panarin will play on Zibanejad’s wings to start the season. Rinne will take over for Lundqvist as the starting job (trading Hank was my toughest move as GM, but the team’s best interests have to come before loyalty sometimes, and he got us a few picks and quite a bit of cap space) for this season and likely next year as well before Sheshtyorkin is hopefully ready. Miller will be the 6th defenseman paired with DeAngelo as New York isn’t 100% sold on Day being ready just yet. Rattie, Ferland, and Rychel will likely battle it out with other players for depth spots in the Rangers lineup.

BREAKING: Rangers Make Last Cuts From Preseason Rosters

The Rangers announced that out of all the forwards battling for the 2 wing spots on the 4th line and the spot as the 13th forward (which included Chytil, Repo, Fontaine, Rychel, Sundqvist, Gropp, Lemieux, Ferland, Vatrano, Terry, Rattie, Samuelsson, and Kosmachuk), Vatrano, Terry, and Ferland would get the jobs. So the Rangers opted for familiarity here as both Vatrano and Terry were on the team last season.

Preseason Review

Record: 4-2-1 (9 points)
Rank: 1st in Metropolitan Division
Point Leader: Anthony DeAngelo (1-5-6)

Analysis: Another solid performance from some of the younger players in the organization. They gave GM Chris Drury a lot to think about, but as mentioned earlier, he opted to go with the guys who were with the team last season. I do expect some trades within the next couple of months. I think the Rangers know a lot of these guys deserve legitimate chances elsewhere, and Hartford also has some pretty good player scratched because of how deep their team is, so they need to move some people out to get others playing time.
