NBC cuts to news rather than stay with Stadium Series last 3 minutes

Obviously the last thing anyone thought would happen was the lights going out. Still since that happened does anyone think for the 2019 Stadium Series game between the Penguins & Flyers in Philadelphia NBC should schedule the game to start at 7:00 PM EST and not 8:00 PM EST? This way there won't be any chance of it running into the local NBC news channels at 11:00 PM EST and delaying the start of Saturday Night Live.

They do this all the time, I remember them cutting off a Penguins game just so they can air their horse racing pre-race show and then there was this time a Notre Dame game(vs. USF) was running late due to a storm delay and they bumped that over to VS so they could air some other stuff.

I remember watching a good NHL game featuring Detroit on a Sunday afternoon. Game went into overtime. NBC had to go to its golf programming, so never saw the end....

Hockey is really lucky that Ed Snider and Comcast bought NBC. Or else they would have never got a National TV contract. All these moves, for Vegas, Seattle and Houston are in the efforts of obtaining another. And frankly the NHL has not bargaining power. NBA, College basketball, NASCAR, golf all trump the NHL. Only a matter of time that with all the Mexicans getting in ahead of the wall, that MLS does too. NBC does not even touch hockey, until the NFL season is over.

Hockey is still a novelty sport outside out the stronghold of the northern U.S., where it is engrained, and the Eastern seaboard up to Washington now. With some traction on the West Coast.

But hardly the material of a national sport. Give Bettman credit though, he keeps increasing revenues. And the value of his franchises. Though really the bottom could fall out anytime, if the cap or revenue sharing ever took a hit.

Didn't even know there was an outdoor game until turning on HNIC at 7:00PM and going... what the hey...

Time for the NHL to give it a rest...

And if it wasn't for the short blackout it would have finished in the allotted time frame.

I was visiting family and didn't have a chance to tune in until the power outage. In addition, sound was turned down (mom had remote), and there was no crawler announcement I saw.

:dunno:

Network affiliates are usually not happy about giving up the pre-8:00 slots to the network, especially for something that doesn't score big ratings, like hockey. So, there's a good chance if the network asked them to give up 7-8:00 for an NHL game, that a number of affiliates would opt out of airing the game and show a movie or something.

I thought for the games just on NBC the network affiliates have to show whatever games the NHL wants, no matter what the start time would be.

Call me crazy but NBC just broadcasted the 2018 Olympics and one hockey league and it's players were noticeably absent despite there being plenty of demand from many to see another best-on-best tournament.

Maybe, just maybe, this is their way of pitching inside to Bettman and the owners to say that they weren't happy with that at all especially considering NBC is their primary rights holder in the States.

Especially since NBC got exclusive TV rights, it is dumb that NHL didn’t work into their TV deal that a game can’t be pushed to another channel half way through the game.
