You funny guy. Every player has holes - even Gretzky, Howe, Orr, etc. They would even tell you that.

Thats beyond the point

Kovalchuk was so much better than any other forward when he was here. The Devils never had a forward like him. Elias, even in his best seasons, never controlled the game like Kovalchuk could and benefitted from good line chemistry, same with Parise who just netted in rebounds and then had his point totals drastically go down when he played with different linemates on a different system.

Yeah, the highest tier of this generation is Ovechkin/Crosby/Malkin. But the next tier is Kovalchuk and a other select few players that the Devils never truly had. This team won its championships because of Niedermayer/Stevens/Brodeur, which is all fine and dandy but it was beautiful to see someone like Kovalchuk play on this team because the Devils team really never had star forwards to Kovalchuk's level in their prime.

Nobody is as exciting as him to watch on the ice, end of story. Kovalchuk would change the emotion of a game and his dangling was down right impossible to stop at its best.

Tell me a player that could do this on the Devils:

It's not even about the miss, because he dangled 4 Canes players as a Thrasher and scored a much prettier goal. Its just that nobody on the team had the skill to ever do that.

I don't care how much you hate Kovalchuk for what he's done to this franchise, but I'm happy for every game I got to watch him play in a Devils uniform. The guy was the best forward (maybe best player) to ever play for this franchise. What an amazing, dynamic, electric hockey player he was, it was a treat to watch. Thank you for everything you did for NJ Kovy, I am even happy about the voiding of that contract, because that would have sucked in the long run, I just wish you would've came back this offseason to help out the Devils, even if you played for us. Thank you Kovy.

Kovalchuk was once a very great NHL player. One of the best forwards in the league at one time.

But this video is 7+ years old now. He's not that guy anymore.

I smell something burning. I think it's the smell of Martin Brodeur and Scott Stevens jerseys burning in the rafters at Prudential Center.

They just spontaneously combusted after a post suggesting that Kovalchuk may have been the best player to ever play for the franchise.

Seriously.

That suggestion was enough to set ablaze every jersey and cup winning banner in the rafters.

Funny how Thornton keeps getting brought up when again, he signed a one-year contract (not the three this guy wanted) with a team he's been with and the Sharks didn't have to trade for him, nor was he changing leagues. It's basically willful ignorance to keep drumming in the comparison as players as if their situations are anything close to the same. So I guess all GM's are as dumb as fans cause nobody even made him an offer.

And the stuff about the best player in the franchise history, it's amazing the extent some of you were so starved for a flashy name forward to show up here you've built him up into god mode.

He was so great we were lucky he left and voided his garbage contract.

Will always be grateful for Kovy and what he did during our playoff run but lets not compare him the the mount rushmore of devils that hang in the rafters

People should grovel at his feet for one playoff run that did not end up in a cup? Should we start planning ring of honor spots for CBGB too?

This team made a giant commitment for this guy. To the point we got penalized for it, something that really cost us in getting competitive sooner, and he bailed on it for money.

He didn't honor his commitment. He didn't want to play here.

We have plenty of amazing players who did want to play here. Who have actually accomplished things in the NHL like bringing us Stanley Cups.

He belongs as a bad footnote in this history of this team.

Kovalchuk couldn't play defense to save his life. Elias was 10x the greater player overall.
Then you have Brodeur, Stevens, Niedermayer.

I'd take them all over again over Kovalchuk in a draft.

lol Elias is absolute garbage in comparison to Kovalchuk

Don't even compare a guy who literally was a passenger for every cup run compared to the guy who carried every team on his back for years

The most goals Thornton scored in a playoff run was 3 in having made the playoffs 15 seasons!

The guy was straight garbage when it came to postseason playoff runs. Kovy's 2012 run seriously destroys any playoff run that guy ever had and he did it with a broken freaking back

It seems that Mr Grossman is very disappointed and bitter that we couldn't work out a deal with his client.

We're sorry Jay, better luck next year!

Kovalchuk really must have hurt his back from carrying the Atlanta Thrashers to an annual average of 78.5 points in the standings over the 8 years he was there.

Elias led this team in 5v5 scoring pretty much every year Kovalchuk was here.

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/rat...aters&minutes=50&disp=1&sort=PCT&sortdir=DESC

2012 Kovalchuk was tied with Parise and Elias for 5v5 Points with 41, Sykora was just behind with 38.

Points per 60, it wasn't even close Elias was far and away the leader.

Sykora on his last leg scored 3 fewer 5v5 points than Kovalchuk in 2012 solely because of Elias.

Thats because Elias made others better, Kovalchuk sucked the oxygen out of the room and frustrated his linemates.

Kovalchuk was never in the class of Patrick Elias, not on the ice, certainly not in character or leadership. Not in hockey IQ, not defensively, not offensively. Elias was better player on the cusp of his retirement than Kovalchuk ever was in his career.

From 2010 to 2013 Elias outscored Kovalchuk 176 to 172... Elias played over 600 less minutes during that time...so Elias produced 2.63 Points per 60 during that time Kovalchuk 2..23....not even close. 600 minutes is literally more than a half season worth of 5v5 hockey, more like 2/3 of season Kovalchuk got to turnover the puck at the blueline and produce less than Elias.

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/rat...aters&minutes=50&disp=1&sort=PCT&sortdir=DESC

And powerplay was no different when you break it down in time Elias was better there too.

Kovalchuk was an expirement gone bad, one that crushed the organization and its good it's over now
