Dave Schultz: 472 penalty minutes

A player playing 82 games in a season would need to sit in the box for 5 minutes and 45 seconds every game to tie it.

Yes, at this point it's probably even more untouchable than some of Gretzky's records. Just not a record that will ever get the coverage of points, GP, wins, GAA etc.

They'd have to change some core aspects of the game in order for anyone to challenge Gretzky's scoring marks.

But even at that, it's more likely they start having 10-8 games than that they ever again create a context for a 472-PIM season. That's as unbreakable as it gets.

well tom sestito proved you can bang out 27 PIM in 1 play a few years back

5 for fighting, 2 instigator, 10 misconduct and 10 instigator misconduct

few of those and you're right on track

In today's NHL players have to deal with suspensions that the 70's and 80's players didn't have to worry about. Now if players are getting kicked out of games repeatedly they could get suspensions. Also fighting in the final 5 mins of a game gets you a automatic suspension.

The game may change in the future that would allow for more scoring. Probably sometime after Bettman gets the US tv deal done and retires. But I never see the game going back to where any player comes close to Schultz's record.

And in the future fighting will eventually be taken out of the game most likely... don't quote me on that, but society is changing.

Three goals in 21 seconds by Mosienko. And he hit the post 7 second afterwards.

That's pretty crazy but it's also flukey which can happen any time. 472 penalty minutes or waynes totals take an entire season of producing at rates that basically aren't possible in todays nhl.

1992-93 Ottawa Senators 41 road losses.

Wtf lol, they lost every road game?

That’s impossible to get close to 1/2 that many PIM’s. Since a player would be suspended too many times, and would miss too many games. Or the coach would never deal with that many PK’s in a game.

Yuppers

Should make the Golden Knights fans appreciate the expansion draft rules last year a lot.

Not even close.

For example, go take a look at how good Alexander Ovechkin was in his peak 65-goal season. Now, tell me what kind of player would score 93 goals in a single season. Hell, once Ovechkin has retired, you could split that goal total into 2 and still be #1 and #2 in scoring during most seasons.

Seems easier than a 10 point game.

Sam Gagner a few years back did hit 8. Not a memorable player by any means, so it can happen with one of those fluke games. Although it is noteworthy that we went through the Lemieux and Gretzky era without so much as a 9 point game so maybe Sittler's 10 point game is safe for now.

The last player to get 400 PIM in a season was Mike Peluso in 1992 with 408. The last to get 300 was Daniel Carcillo in 2008 with 324 and then Zenon Konopka with 308 in 2011. In fact, only 4 times has there been a season with 400+ PIM and two of them were Dave Schultz. We are more at the original 6 levels where the leader didn't necessarily have 200 PIM. It might surprise people that Brad Marchand hasn't even had a 100 PIM season. Schultz's record might be safe for a while, however at least in that case more than one player hit 400 PIM, in Gretzky's case he's the only one to top 200 points.

I think we can all agree that 502 straight games as a goalie will never be broken right? Glenn Hall can take that to his grave. So that is NEVER going to be touched while the others have potential.

The San Jose Sharks had 71 losses in 1993, the most ever. That's quite safe I would think.

^^^ "Bill Mikkelson's plus/minus of -82".......

Ouch. Yeah he played on some bad teams, but jeez. Looking at his stats, he played 147 games and finished a -147, would really be rough being his defensive partner out there. Was -54 another season. Yikes.

The single season scoring and penalty minute records do seem out of reach. The NHL might make rule changes to increase scoring but I can't see them reducing the size of goalie equipment, so the way to offset that would be to make the nets bigger... and I don't see that happening either, it would cause all scoring records to be marked with an asterisk.

I don't see the NHL doing anything to increase fighting either and even if they did, I think in general there would be less fighting because of all players wearing helmets now, some with visors.
