McPhee Passes Up Offers for No. 1

Saturday, June 26, 2004; Page D08

RALEIGH, N.C., June 25 -- Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee said yesterday that he's been contacted by 15 teams about the No. 1 pick -- three of them presented attractive offers -- but is committed to making the first selection. McPhee, speaking at a hotel here, all but said the player he plans to choose is Alexander Ovechkin.

"We've decided that we are going to make the pick" rather than trade it away, McPhee said. "And we are clear about who we are going to take. . . . You'll find out tomorrow. It's in the best interest of this franchise to make the selection. You don't get here very often. And we've got a chance to take a fantastic player."
