McDavid vs Ovechkin

Do you think McDavid will eclipse Ovechkin's career and be an all-time better player?

Eclipse is a large task, Ovechkin stood toe to toe with arguably a top 5 player OAT and even bested him a few times.

I think right now, you can pencil McDavid in for at least a similar career, but it's definitely going to be tough because of Ovechkin's awards, his unique style of play and his beastly goal scoring abilities.

People forget, but Ovechkin was an absolute rocket when he came into the NHL, a rocket at 230lbs+ no less....just ridiculous.

Yeah - when he was allowed to hit people Ovie was Rocket-Tank

Nope. Mac В would have much shorter carrer than people think. His style based at speed. Limited long range shots or etc. Matter of short time when MacD begins to would be slower than now.
And almost all high speed based style players - are injured knees near he would reach 30 years. Almost all high speed based players had similar problems. The knees and cartilages of the meniscus simply can not stand a long career because of the overloads of joints are harder than the rest of the players. Examples are Bure / Gaborik and almost all high speed players in league. MaсВ he will be forced to change the style, but without having an excellent shot he simply will not have the ways to adjust how the Ovi has adapted

Sure but he has been mediocre since then and clearly has had good teams surrounding him. His immediate peers and other all-time greats simply have better playoff resumes regardless of how you view the team around him. Many Pens fans claim that management/coaching kept them from even more success after 2009.

He is arguably a Top Ten playoff performer of his era.
"In rounds 1 and 2 of the playoffs, Ovechkin has accounted for 19% of the Capitals goals and has a point on 37.5% of Caps goals. For Crosby, those numbers are 12% and 35%. Maybe the supporting cast should pull their weight. This is NOT to say he's a better player, this is strictly about the Capitals lack of secondary scoring." to extend our talk about Ovie success. Thing are much harder than they looks

Mcdavid will never have a shot like Ovechkin but if he can finish even little bit more of those 2 on 1's or partial breakaways, he'll go the Crosby route and win the Rocket Richard and just like Sid, he'll be the better player and have a better career than Ovechkin...
MacD s Salary wouldnt allow him to have hisd own Malkin or somebody similar to malkins role. Problem of great players like Ovie - poor supporting staff like (toews/kane, marchand /bergeron, Sid / Geno, Getzlaf Perry). teams at PO just shut down 1 star player and team hadnt answer if they havent second star level player to usу their game against 1 st star. We would see similar to Ovie carrer without any Stanley cup. Reason that Ovie havent cup - poor management and coaching of Washington. As i said earlier^

No matter how talented, the odds are against predicting for any 21 year old player to surpass Ovechkin. Just too many things have to go right.

That said, another half season or so should be enough for the Canadian media to crown McDavid.

My comment wasn't about secondary scoring. It's saying that if OV produced at the same level as Crosby has in Rounds 1 and 2, the Caps may have had more success in advancing past Round 1 or Round 2 over the years. The % of teams points is not relevant to this.

If OV was among the leaders in playoff PPG this may hold more weight. A player like Jagr was also critiqued for not getting the Pens sans Mario very far but at least his production was the best in the league. OV's PPG is 9th best (min. of 50 games) since his first playoff appearance.

IMO, he may have the best toolbox out of the bunch but he is lacking the true killer instinct that you need to win championships.

Mcdavid will probably have a better career than syd, he is already currently better than him.

OV had 65 goals and 112 pts in his 3rd season.
163g/310 total pts through his first 3 years

Mcdavid is on pace for 39g/100pts
that would give him 79g/248 pts

OV, and it isn't that close. When Mcdavid starts getting 50g AND 100+ pts he can be mentioned in the same convo as the great 8

Wasnt Ovy like 2 years older when he started in the Nhl?

If I was betting I would say no though. Ovy has been pretty much healthy his whole career and the chances of MacD having the same luck/endurance is probably not good.

Obviously McDavid won't touch Ovi goal scoring wise, but he is something else. I've never seen a player so consistently more dangerous offensively on the ice than McDavid.

I think he's career will mirror Crosby's, and thus he'd be ahead of Ovi when its all said and done

Hell no. Ovechkin got a legit case for best goal scorer of all time and at his peak he was quite the playmaker+physical force aswell.
Cant see McDavid challenge for anything of all time really, except maybe most overrated player(currently belongs to Crosby AINEC).

I mean it's not impossible but it's just very, very unlikely.

I don't think it's as unlikely as you make it seem. He appears as though he will be an Art Ross/Hart contender at the least for the next decade and by the end of this season could already have more Art Ross than Ovechkin.

Here is what we know so far:

McDavid was ahead of OV at age 19/20 (McDavid's 2nd year vs. OV's rookie year) and age 20/21 (McDavid's current year vs. OV's 2nd year).
McDavid will have a tough time matching OV for the next three years but his development and playoff performance is a bit of an unknown right now. He is a perennial Art Ross contender, arguably the favourite, but needs to prove he can reach the same level in the playoffs.

This hasn't stopped Crosby from being rated as better. If he is the better talent it should up in results unless he is injury-prone like Lindros, Forsberg or Malkin.

McDavid will pass him as a better all-time player especially if he keeps pacing for triple digits in points every year. He plays the more important position, is arguably better than him in every other area of the game besides goal scoring - which is not surprising since McDavid is a playmaker first. 30+ goals not bad at all for a kid who identifies as a pass first player.

BS . Sorry but Ovie alone can be checked. He havent another star who could distract.Fact is that every star player would have higher PPG at playoffs if they have another star player.

What does this even mean? Does Malkin wave his arms from the bench to distract the opposition?

OV has been also been on some star-studded Russian teams BTW.

The bolded is absolutely debatable.
