The Maximum Football series has been around for years, but it was bought by a different company, thankfully. It had a pretty deep franchise, but the gameplay was beyond horrible. PS1 like gameplay at best. The new game looks much better.

If you don't care about NFL and are fine with College Football, this game I'm about to link is pretty good and more in line what you're looking for. I've played this and it's really solid. Developer is really active too with many planned features.



There's also this, but I've never played it so I can't comment. Probably easy to get an NFL mod.
