According to the Cap Friendly website he is set to be an RFA after this season and I hope the Leafs just let him go so he can become an UFA, because I can't remember him doing anything good when he was given a chance. Last season in the playoffs he was the reason they lost Game 1 in overtime and when they got eliminated in Game 6 in overtime.

Dude Game 1 overtime was on Freddie. How can you just blame Marincin; because he failed to clear?

Game 6: Blame Babcock for a little as well. His LOVE for the 4th line also is to be blamed; Marcin could have tied up Williams a bit better but a lot of Leafs were out of position to begin with on the series winner for the caps

Marincin also played fine in the games Leafs won including a double overtime. It is not like whenever Marincin was on ice Leafs were getting scored on

Marty Marincin is the defining example of why the eye test should never be fully abandoned.

Looking at a spreadsheet does not show you the trainwreck that is Marty Marincin.

Fine. Hes great the majority of the time, but when he makes a mistake it is CATASTROPHIC.

Exactly, always remember the eyes too. That guy stinks, I don’t care what any stat says, not an NHL D man.

Get him out of here. He may be too good for the AHL, but he is not an NHL player. He is the poster child for analytics being imperfect. Plus he only really had one good season in analytics, he's been below average since then IIRC. He sucks and I wish him all the best somewhere else.

I'm at the marlies game. He's had his issues staying on his skates. I noticed his laces are practically down to the ice. I wonder if that's normal for him.

During my many years on HFboards, if it's something I've learned it's that super hyped players are never quite as good as they are made out to be, and whipping boys are never quite as bad as they're portrayed. After the 2017 playoffs I think the hate for Marincin reached new heights. Now, 1,5 years later he's still with Maple Leafs. So now I wonder, is/was all the hate warranted? Do you believe he will be done in the NHL after this season, or can he still carve out a few more years in the NHL in a role as a #6/#7 D, even if it's not with the Leafs? What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

i think he can be a fine bottom pairing nhl dman, nothing wows you about him except his reach and he uses it well, maybe hes okay at boxing out and an OK skater for his size too actually. Hes not bad but not great either, he gets the gardiner treatment a lot, ie focusing on one or two mistakes and overlooking the many things he does okay-well.

He's 26 and has 182 nhl games in his name, i think he could play 300+ if given the chance,

Exactly. He's a fine guy as your 6th if you have to play him.

He's actually been very steady this year, maybe the best I've seen him. He absolutely needs to be paired with someone who can move the puck though. At the very least he's a legit 5-6, and he's great at holding the blue line, probably his best attribute.

I'm positively surprised by these answers. Pretty much everytime I check one of your GDT's he's ripped on. I was expecting more responses in the likes of "he's garbage".

If my predictions about Christian Jaros and Erik Cernak becoming top 4 defeseman turns out right, as well as Martin Fehervary becoming a #3-#5 defenseman, things aren't looking to shabby for Slovakia on the backend if Marincin can maintain this level to provide some depth.

Marincin will definitely longer with Toronto. He seems to be a Dubas pick.

He has good gap control in the neutral zone and as others have pointed out he’s improved defensively.

He used to be thought of here as nothing more than a PK specialist but I think he’s evolved to a decent 3rd pairing defender.

I think it's important to expand on when he stinks...playoffs.

Leafs could use him to get through the regular season and buy some development time for Sandin and Borgman and Rosen in the minors.

He is what he is; a good #7 defenseman. In the Cap world teams need $800,000 - #7 defenseman that can step in for 20 games per season. He is a reliable #7 defenseman. If you look around the league Marincin is probable better than the #7 defenceman on a lot of the teams.
