Madden is impossible to trust on this kind of thing.......... he does have excellent contacts but he isnt always right. Infact he tends to be either spectacularly correct and ahead of everybody else or spectacularly wrong.

ie He had Recchi signing with the Penguins and the contract details before anybody else....... but he also had Kovalev signing the same day.

So who knows.

ESPN is as in-touch with the hockey world as Eklund is with his "sources". Remember the "ESPNHL"? Or the ESPN guy who was on the Score touting the ESPNHL, only to admit that he didnt know anything about hockey and was only a financials guy. :dunce:

As much as Id like to believe it, the chances that ESPN is right on something... ANYTHING... to do with hockey are slim to none, and slim just left the country.

Everything occuring recently really does fit hand in hand - the equipment ordered by Phoenix/Anaheim, both the NHL and PA keeping silent about the current status of negotiations, normally optimistic players suddenly becoming pessimistic (PR/Positioning), and now people like Mark Madden (I'm from Pittsburgh, and although he's not exactly the nicest radio personality around, he does know what he's talking about). TSN and Sportsnet have been reporting negative things recently; however, with the NHL and PA keeping silent, they had no facts to go by, effectively making them as credible as any other source out there on lockout-related issues. Assuming that Madden did indeed make that statement, then for all those reasons, I'm almost convinced that there WILL be an agreement made later this week.

ESPN radio is a slightly different beast than ESPN.com or the actual TV station. ESPN radio will feature regional sports talk and a guy like Madden is local to Pittsburgh. I'd only say that Madden is only loosely related to ESPN.

Sadly I still remember Madden primarily for his short stint in World Championship Wrestling.

Madden works for espn radio, but his sources are not in the espn family. He does have a very well known source. You guys can figure it out.

If his sources are outside of ESPN for hockey, then that changes stuff. I would love to see this come to an end, but Im really losing hope that anything of substance will happen. Heres hoping im wrong!

yeah, 40m for the soft cap is way too high, and destroyed this one for me.
remember $40 million is the soft cap, the floor will be much lower like $32 million, as long as there is a stif tax over $40 million it could work. But it also needs to have good revenue sharing as a base.
