Malkin or Phaneuf?

It depends on team needs. If you need the offensive help, you go with Malkin; if you're not good defensively, you go with Phaneuf.

We already know Phaneuf can play NA hockey, we already know he will be good.

Do I want a forward with elite potential, or do I want a defenseman who will almost certainly reach his elite potential?

Like asking: Do you want a young Scott Niedermayer, or do you want a young Joe Sakic.

There is quite a few more elite forwards than elite defenseman.

I'll take Phaneuf any day.

If anyone who has seen Beliveau play can watch Malkin at the WJC, I think they are so similar in play it is scary.
