How does Nathan Horton not make these teams...I'm sure its just an oversight on your part, but I would have thought this guy would be a top 6 forward on any of these teams, especially with his 20 plus goals on a bad Florida team this year.
You can only pick two guys who were picked in the top 5. As good as Horton is, people are likely tempted to take guys like Ovechkin, Crosby, Staal, Pitkanen, Bouwmeester, Lehtonen, and other top 5 guys over him.

Alex Ovechkin - Sidney Crosby - Patrice Bergeron
Alex Semin - Jeff Carter - Steve Bernier
Wojtek Wolski - Ryan Getzlaf - Patrick O'Sullivan
Robert Nilsson - Zach Parise - Alex Steen

Dion Phaneuf - Joni Pitkanen
Matt Carle - Brent Seabrook
Shea Weber - Andrej Meszaros

Hannu Toivonen
Cam Ward

To answer some previous posts...Horton isn't on cause Crosby/Ovechkin/Phaneuf/Pitkanen > Horton.

Lehtonen's not on for the same reason. While Lehtonen is the cream of the crop when it comes to young tenders, the guys mentioned above are just that much more distinguished than their peers.

I havent seen Malkin in many of the lineups.

While I think that may change by the end of next year (and that could be the Pens homer talking), I'd say it's damn near impossible to pass up two number one picks that have already had 100+ point seasons in the big show in favor of Malkin.

edit: and btw, mad props to RallyKiller for one of the coolest thread ideas I've seen in the prospects board in a loooooooooong time.

I tried to make a successful NHL team for next season...

Forwards:
1. Alex Ovechkin (top five) - Eric Staal (top five) - Justin Williams
2. Milan Michalek (top ten) - Patrice Bergeron - Corey Perry
3. Chris Higgins - Mike Richards - Patty Eaves
4. Derek Boogaard - Jarret Stoll - Dustin Brown

Defenseman:
1. Dion Phaneuf (top ten) - Brent Seabrook
2. Keith Ballard - Zybnek Michalek
3. Andrej Meszaros - Shea Weber

Goalies:
1. Cam Ward
2. Ray Emery

...Not the most upside, I'm sure. Though, I think it's a team where guys would have roles in which they could be very successful. I think it's a playoff team, for sure.

I tried to pick the best "team" not simply the best players from the draft. Also tried to keep players in their positions, only change i made i think is moving Tukonen to LW from RW.

Question was for players drafted in the last 4 drafts, 2002-2005.

I agree with everything you said except for the fact i think Toivonen holds more raw potential than Lehtonen..

He clearly does not. Having been watching both a lot in Finland and Lehtonen have been always better and have always had more potential. Toivonen have potential to be really good goalie at NHL, but Lehtonen have potential to be best goalie in NHL.

Becuase Crosby, Ovechkin... (Malkin) If you are a crazy Pens' Homer > Horton!

Let me try this again...

Forwards:
1. Alex Ovechkin (top five) - Eric Staal (top five) - Jeff Carter
2. Milan Michalek (top ten) - Patrice Bergeron - Corey Perry
3. Chris Higgins - Mike Richards - Patty Eaves
4. Ben Eager - Jarret Stoll - Dustin Brown

Defenseman:
1. Dion Phaneuf (top ten) - Shea Weber
2. Keith Ballard - Brent Seabrook
3. Andrej Meszaros - Matt Greene

Goalies:
1. Cam Ward
2. David LeNeveu

I think it's a pretty balanced roster. Not an all-star (or future all-star) team. I think it's a team that would win alot of hockey games with solid, physical, two-way play. Oh, and a rediculous amount of goals from Ovechkin and assists from Staal.

Toivonen didn't play more than one full season (edit: actually only 24 games) in Finland before he went to NA, so his play in Finland doesn't tell the whole truth about his potential.

Tried to go with all Alexanders on the LW. Then I remember Frolov is from 2000. Then remembered about Radulov! Steen can play the wing.
