Then kid is still in junior at the beginning of his D+2 year. Not saying you Mort but many seem to have already made their final determination on him. Like all prospects I'm quite content to wait it out and see which ones develop into actual NHL players.

I think many are starting to see he has some potential obviously. It would be extremely troubling if he wasn't playing well in his D+2 19 year old season in a Junior league. He'd basically be a surefire bust if he wasn't playing well right now. His current level of play is a lot more promising. Have you heard of 6'8 Russian Dman Oleg Sosunov? He was drafted by Tampa in the 6th round, 178th overall in 2016. He is currently playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors and he has been a massive reason they are currently 7 and 1 on the season and one of the best teams in the WHL. Proof you don't need to be taken in the first round as a massive defencemen to show progress.

I agree. There is lots of time and there will be lots of opportunity for him. It's amazing and amusing to see extreme conformation bias at play on this forum at times. If he ever does turn into the next Chara there will still be people denying it I'm sure.

He has to take a couple of big steps if he is going to make it, like most 19 year old prospects, and with a solid 5 years to get there. That's a lot of time to develop those skill, to take those steps
He has this year and three more (his ELC) to earn a second contract. That's the benefit of being a first round pick. It he wasn't drafted early, he'd likely be playing to prove he deserves an ELC.

He's got a long way to go, but he's got 4 years to figure it out. Fingers crossed.

That's a pretty ridiculous assertion.

I think you meant confirmation bias, but I must say there is an awful lot conformation bias on these boards as well!

And what happens if he doesn't. It will continue being no big deal to people who weren't detractors of the pick and we all move on with life. My guess is that happens regardless of what he becomes. He either becomes a good player for us or stands as a lesson to our scouting staff. We win either way IMO.

Well most likely if he makes it to the NHL he finds himself somewhere inbetween a star and a bust...you know a 4-5-6 kind of guy.

I think there is a dual weirdness to the enigma that is Stanley. I mean there was the detractors and there was the lovers. But it seems anytime he does anything people are getting really excited. Yet a 7th rounder in the same age group is on a 120 point pace and no one really cares because he's not 6'7 and wasn't drafted high.

Most here only care about prospects once they are drafted by the Jets.

I hated the pick and I hated that we actually traded up to make it. But that doesn't necessarily mean Stanley will be a complete failure.

doesn't every 1st rounder get talked about more the 7th rounders regardless of their height and what they do in 5 games.

True but there;s just so much more enthusiasm for him to succeed then some of our other guys. I mean would anyone bat an eye of Skylar McKenzie never made it as an NHLer? Probs not and he likely won't get many chances to be. But Stanley on the other hand. I think there is a bit of bias going the other way for Stanley. I mean people really really want this kid to succeed but you don't see the same level of enthusiasm for anyone else. You see it all the time. People wantng him to be the next Chara or Myers. Yet no one says man I wish McKenzie could be the next Gaudreau. Like I really really hope and wish him well and every time he gets a point I'm going to come and make sure everyone knows it. It's an odd dynamic.

I suppose. I just think all prospects should be treated the same. If someone sucks they suck regardless of where they were picked. If they are good they are good regardless of how big they are.

And some are taking his recent scoring as indicating that he is ready to improve the Jets D by the end of this season. One is as bad as the other.

Nice to see progress. Progress is what a prospect is supposed to do. Coming after his injury shortened season last year it is particularly encouraging. But lets keep a little perspective here.

I won't get too excited yet about McKenzie, but, in Nic Petan's draft+2 year he ended up at 1.65 ppg. McKenzie is at 1.67 so far.
Not bad considering where he was drafted!

I think excitement is probably the wrong word to use, at least for me it is. I would say a better word would be intrigued because of all the controversy over the Jets taking him in the first round. Another big d-man I am intrigued by is our other 7th round pick from last year, Croix Evingson. When I watched video of him playing in the NAHL I was pleasantly surprised by his mobility and ice presence and he has followed that up in first NCAA game with two points and a plus 4. If he continues to put up good numbers as the season progresses I can guarantee you that will get some people excited here. As for Stanley I find him to be an easy player to really root for because of all the negativity that has followed him around since we drafted him.

Who? Like, his parents?

There've been maybe two posters who've ever actually admitted to liking the pick.

I had a dream......

My biggest fear is he becomes an Oleksiak type where our org, like Dallas, refuses to give up on our version of the “big rig” even when there are better options.

I can just see him sucking at the PK and Paul “hotel California” Maurice trotting him out because he is a specialist in the mold of Stu, Hendricks, Tanev, and Jimmy slater. That was always my nightmare scenario before we even drafted him....our org can be stubborn.

That is why his progression is critical......dammit the kid is slotting on the bottom pair no matter how bad he is and one would have had to have fallen off a turnip truck onto their head to not know that.

So while we wait for A few years and watch Hillier and Zinger hang up a Mission accomplished banner from Logan’s locker......I will scream from the top of my lungs.......Run Forest run!!

Ok just having some fun this morning, I am REALLY hoping Logan proves me wrong and happy he is progressing a bit like Sam Morin did in his draft +2 season (so far).

I'm a Stanley skeptic. Still, I think it's reasonable to track his D+2 production, since it's improved.

Even if he keeps up this point pace, he has a long way to go, but the probability that he makes it is more encouraging.
