Hyman - Matthews - Marner
VanRyk - Nylander - Marleau
Komarov - Kadri - Brown
Leivo - Bozak - Kapanen

Rielly - Hainsey
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott - Liljegren

- 1st line loses a bit but should still be great
- get Nylander 2 big strong goalscorers on his wings to form a dominant 2nd line.
- keep the great checking line intact.
- get bozak down to the 4th line where he can do the least damage, still be available for the PP, and hopefully that 4th line feasts on easy matchups.
- keep Martin ready to sub in in case we need some toughness

- get our most talented dmen in the lineup.

I like these lines
Babcock would never go for sitting Martin now and then though.......

See folks talk about Marner partnering up with Matthews butnid liketomsee him and Marleau on the same line.

Marner's playmaking + Marleaus speed, and shot seem like it could work very well

The problem with the Matthews -Marner pair is that the latter isn't a strong finisher. Auston is a top flight playmaker and shouldn't be limited in this front.

The problem is Marner is being paired with players who can't finish his set ups. They are either 1. Too slow 2. Don't have great puck awareness 3. Don't have good chemistry with him 4. Are mediocre

Matthews will not have any problems pairing up with Marner

Matthews would work well with anyone but I'd experiment Marner with Leivo.

I've said in the past.......Marner really needs a possession driver on his team....to help him get the puck deep with pressure, sustained zone time, so he gets a chance to have the puck with open ice/time and space. Similar to Maroon and Draisaitl for McDavid, an example I use pretty frequently.

And obviously, he could use a finisher as well but after the nightmare of Bozak/JVR, I'd value a possession player over all...

Plan: Manage the coach, get the team to have a defensive conscience on each line. Ship out guys that aren't in the long-term plans for futures (Bozak, Komarov, Carrick, Martin), bury guys who can't play at NHL speed (Polak).

Results in:

JvR - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Marleau - Marner
Leivo - Kadri - Brown
Soshnikov - Moore - Kapanen
Extras: Aaltonen, Fehr

Rielly - Hainsey
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Rosen - Marincin
Extras: Borgman

PP1: Marleau - Matthews - Nylander; Leivo - Rielly
PP2: JvR - Kadri - Marner; Gardiner - Brown
PK1: Hyman - Brown; Hainsey - Marincin
PK2: Marleau - Kapanen; Rielly - Zaitsev

If things look good by the deadline, use some of the futures previously acquired to bring in a deadline rental -- could use a better 4C and D rental (Green?).

LMAO @ people who think Leivo is coming into the lineup without there being injuries forcing him in.

You seriously think Babcock is going to put him in, have him tear it up like he did against Philly, and make him look bad again for his terrible lineup decisions?

Never. Going. To. Happen.

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander (still domintate no need to change it)
Kapanen-Marleau-Marner
Leivo-Kadri-Brown
Soshnikov-Moore-Komarov/Martin

Step 1- move Bozak for 3rd to 5th rounder. He is only owed 2 million from here out. 2 million was already paid in bonus.
Step 2- Trade JVR+Bozak pick asset for a D.
Step 3- fill in with youth with hungry players. JVR and Bozak set a poor example for the team. Marner needs hard working players. Marleau has been paired with him 4 on 4, its something for the future.

I would have Morgan Rielly on the trade block to sweeten the return. He does not think the game well enough. Now from a financial angle if Gardiner wants 6-7 million Id move him instead of Rielly. Gardiner is smarter than Rielly and the most dangerous guy with the puck when he is focused. Gardiner's lack of focus at times results in poor decision making which narrows the gap between the 2 players. Gardiner is a more valuable player to the Leafs but his salary demands factor in. They need someone better the Top 3 D on this team.

It's controversial but I think we should talk about getting liljegren in the lineup soon if we still can't transition out of the defensive end or through the neutral zone. Liljegren was actually the best defenceman on the team for zone exits I believe. Yeah he has his warts but he brings a really important dynamic to the backend that we might really need soon

The center drives the line as Babcock like to say. He never believed a winger can drive a line until he saw Kane play in Chicago. That means in 25+ years of being in hockey, Babcock never saw a winger who can drive a line.

That is a moot point for Toronto, seeing how Marner is playing, so the next best thing is to do the same old thing, the center drives the line.

Matthews
Kadri
Marleau
Moore

It goes back to Bozak. Do they want him at center?

and its obvious ,that marner is nt gonna cost us an arm and a leg ,to resign ....whew

Matthews is more of a goal scorer than a playmaker. Nylander has 3 goals playing with Matthews. Worth a shot to try Hyman Matthews Marner.

What this team doesn't need is another offensive minded dman. He would have to be dominating the AHL to have any shot of being called up.

At least for a game to get some of these guys going? At some point we will need to spread out our talent. What if we did something like this.

Leivo - Matthews - Marner
Marleau - Kadri - Nylander
JVR - Aaltonen - Kapanen
Hyman - Moore - Komarov

Scratches: Bozak and Martin

- Matthews is who makes the line. Leivo helps drive possession, and will make space for Marner. Gives Marner a bit of confidence that he is getting a chance to show off again.

- Nylander has played with Kadri last year, adds a new dynamic to that line and hopefully gets them going a bit.

- Third line JVR gets some skilled two way players to play with. Shelters his faults a bit without neutering his offense.

- Typical 4th line. Works hard, kills some time, and can score.

Sends a message, shakes everything up. Closest you can come without a major trade.

It can't hurt? I don't think it requires scratching Bozak per say but some adjustments to your 5 on 5 lines is something that can spark a team.

Having Andersen make consistent saves would also help.

Here:

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander (That line has dominated)
JVR - Kadri - Marner
Leivo - Bozak - Brown
Komarov - Moore - Kapanen

Simple line swaps. Give Bozak easier matchups. Give Kadri 2 more offensive oriented players. 4th line is now faster and potentially even capable of going up against tough match ups.

Leivo may be a good option for Marner as well. Leivo isn't bad defensively, can make plays and shoot plus is 6'2. This is something I'd be trying but unfortunately unless Marner is teaming with Leivo to park the cars at the ACC we won't know.

Babcock said the players will determine the lineup. He said the right players will be on the team just maybe not right away.

Major changes are coming. Watch by game 20. The good news is we have depth and we have assets. We're not winning anything this year. Leivo, Sosh and Kap will soon be in the NHL either with us or used to shore up the backend in a deal.
