I'm pretty sure when Komarov returns to the NHL (after this season), he'll be a UFA. He turns 27 in January.

Yeah this is old news. I don't think he plans on playing for Toronto when he comes back and really our depth is much stronger than it was when he was here so...meh

If Komarov was willing to sign with Toronto for a decent price, I'd welcome him with opwn arms. I love how he is an agitator that can draw penalties, but takes few himself. He is the only guy that we we lost over the summer that I wish we still had.

Pretty much what I was going to say. It'll really come down to price if he wants to come back to the Leafs. He shouldn't be getting much more than 4th line minutes, so he'll have to be paid accordingly.

the only thing stopping his return is that Leaf management may prefer filling up their team with the young guns

He wants a bigger role offensively. Not sure we can give him that.

I feel like that was the main reason the contact demands were so far apart. What more did he want? He rode shotgun with a PPG Kadri for numerous games and was an offensive blackhole.

I guess it all depends on what he views his role to be vs. what Leafs management views it to be. If he wants to be a secondary scoring option and get paid accordingly (like he has been in the KHL, but which didn't translate well into the NHL), then he probably doesn't fit into our future. However, if he's willing to play in a checking line forward role (a role which he excelled at last year), then he's a great option.

We've also got plenty of players who can fit that role coming up the pipeline; Ashton, Biggs, Broll, Ross, etc.

As much as I love Leo, you truly can see the difference between the KHL and the NHL. If he can find a way to improve his offensive game, great, but otherwise, I don't see it.

A finn here, this stuck into my eye recently, it's from an interview with komarov made by a finnish hockey website

-There's definitely a big difference with these leagues (NHL and KHL). The rinks here are much bigger and you have to skate a lot more. Personally I prefer the NHL.

-I have a one-year contract here, but I am going to force my way back to the NHL as long as there is some team who will have me, Komarov laughs.

Quite interesting quote in my opinion, one usually doesn't say things like that at this point of the season, especially when afair Toronto would've wanted to keep Komarov? I wonder if something happened in Russia already.

Carter Ashton looks like a more-than-suitable replacement. Ashton hits slightly less effectively perhaps, but he can drop the mitts, and has more offensive upside IMO. Komarov was kind of an offensive black-hole at the NHL level. Still love him, but not sure we'd be able to fit both him and Ashton. I like having a goon in the lineup so it's tight, though I think Ashton could perhaps move to the third line eventually.

He deserves to be on an NHL roster... but he'll never make KHL money on this side of the Atlantic.

pass. he doesn't give us much more then hitting/pk/pest, we can find a ton of those players on our AHL roster for a fraction of what he wants.

I'd love to have him on the 4th line with McClement and one of the goons. Much better look than dressing both McLaren and Orr IMO.

He'll play in NA again but not for us. He wants a bigger role than "4th line energy bug". Komarov will sign with whoever is willing to cast him as a 3rd line scorer.

I would love to have him back. If he got out of his contract and wanted to return to the NHL right now I'd welcome him back with open arms. This guy is a gritty player that our 4th line could use.

Komarov Discussion

He's got 10 points in 9 KHL games. Not to bad!

Is he a UFA at the end of the season allowing any NHL team to sign him? Does he have an out clause this year for Moscow? Does anyone see any glimmer of hope of him resigning, if we are able to move Liles, freeing up space?

Man such a fantastic offseason, only to have this one black cloud, anyone want to speculate on what you think made him go home? Just the money? Or did he want an expanded role, other than a PK specialist\4th line\3rd line tweener.
