Because up untill that point, winning the South-East meant nothing. You can look back in hindsight now, but how many people had them winning the cup from the get-go? Not many, I bet.

Depends on when you mean with "from the get-go". Preseason (03-04) I'd say they weren't favorites for anything besides leading the SE Division again. The main buzz then was about the Avs loading up with Kariya & Selanne. But by playoff time, how can you say the #1 seed in the East was an "unexpected finalist"? It wasn't that much of a stretch.
