I'm still okay with the Simmons trade. We have no idea how Newcombe will end up, and Simmons might be this generation's Omar Vizquel. If we were to rebuild, the guys I would keep are Trout, Calhoun, Simmons, and maybe a few of the younger starting pitchers.

It's a different direction in the acquisition of Simmons. It means we're mortgaging our future to win now. j

There is no REBUILD. This is it. We don't have any leverage in our farm team b/c got rid of our #1 and #3 prospects, who are both pitchers. Unless owner Moreno is willing to spend more money and go over the threshold, we're gonna be middling.

Under the previous GM, the process was to accrue more pitching and start building our depth on the farm team. The previous GM started the REBUILD in trading away lots of MLB players and made way for players to move up like Calhoun and young pitchers. With Simmons gone, the team is still winning. Granted, it's a small sample size, but it's significant when projected long term and knowing the owner will be a cheapskate now.

Don't look now, but the Angels previous GM now heads up Seattle. They made several moves that didn't mortgage the future in the offseason. It's early, but they're leading the Pacific division. Last year, the Mariners were 10 games under .500 with a -70 scoring differential. This year, they're +43 scoring differential and eight games above .500.

And yes, he traded Trumbo AGAIN. LoL

Ran into Freddie at the game today. He was talking about the Memorial Cup with some buddies.

Don't follow the Angels that closely ... but why is Mark Trumbo not still in an Angel's jersey? Those weren't homers, they were like GBU bunker busters from a B-2.

Angels' owner decided he was done play fantasy baseball after forcing the club to sign Pujols and Hamilton in consecutive years. Then out of nowhere, the owner said, "we're on a budget."

So the GM was forced to make lemonade out of nothing. He traded Trumbo for two pitchers - Skaggs and Santiago. It also opened up a spot for Calhoun.

Trumbo then went from Arizona and signed with Seattle Mariners.

Well, the Angels GM that traded him away the first time, then became the Mariner's GM this past offseason. So he traded away Trumbo once again, but this time as a salary dump.

Trumbo hits HR's. But he doesn't walk often, strikes out a lot, low average, and weak on-base percentage. GM Dipoto is a stats guy.

It was a great move to acquire pitchers b/c signing Pujols and Hamilton cost the Angels back to back first round picks. So GM Dipoto kept trading for pitchers.

Our new GM just traded away our #1 and #3 pitching prospect, with the #1 ranked a first round pick. Our pitching situation moving forward is a mess now.

Short version for tl;dr
Trumbo can only hit homers, but nothing else and not often enough.

Traded to them, not signed.

Trouts going to get robbed of what should be his 5th MVP in 5 full years because this disgraceful team can't make the playoffs.

His plate discipline is remarkable this year.

So Josh was released by the Rangers and now gets to just sit around and collect his money from Anaheim. There is a possibility he comes back, but I think this last injury is the end of him.

This should be a daily reminder for the owner to let baseball people do the baseball decisions.

There was an article and thought about this on some Angels blog... if being in the playoffs is one of the requirements, then why in the hell is Trout runner-up at all? Why not discount his efforts and only put players in the playoffs to be voted upon?

A huge contradiction to have Trout finished 2nd overall in voting if the requirement is to be in the playoffs for MVP considerations.

They would fit quite well, in the sense they are all injured for most/all of 2017 - like most of our current rotation
