Treliving's not going to try to sign him this summer because he's important to the team or something, is he?

Treliving's been trying to sign him all season. I imagine they'll offer him something in the summer if he isn't signed.

If it makes you feel better, though, the fact that they haven't gotten an extension done shows that Treliving doesn't believe Russell is worth what Russell apparently thinks Russell is worth.

I feel about the same. It's probably a good idea to try to trade him now.

The whole wanting to re-sign Russell thing is actually kind of odd.

In pre-season, they more or less announce contract extension talks have begun. A couple of weeks later, when the Flames are having an absolutely horrible start, Russell's suddenly trade bait.

Then, crickets. No word on contracts talks, or anything for a couple of months. Early new year, we hear the Flames are still looking to re-sign Russell. But then McKenzie, with about three weeks left until the deadline, states that two sides haven't even exchanged numbers yet.

Can't help but think some of the bluster about wanting to re-sign Russell was just gamesmanship and showcasing. Especially given what Treliving has said all along - that he wants to get bigger, harder to play against and better at possession. Re-signing Russell what have accomplished exactly none of those things.

Russell was never trade bait, it was rumored teams were asking about him, not he was being shopped

Loubardias is horrible to listen to at the best of times and that was far from his best. A terrible argument and an obnoxious way to deliver it. It was great when they took him off the TV, hopefully they will take him off the radio soon as well.

As for Russell, if he is in your top 4 you are not likely a successful team. He is brutal at moving the puck out of his own zone and compounds that by being terrible at taking the puck from the other team. Lou can try to pass the blame on his partners and the forwards but it is Russell who creates the problems more often than not.

He is fine as a 3rd line guy and can be sheltered but asking him to play against talented guys is a recipe for disaster.

A clear 5/6 guy and I feel much more comfortable with Engelland on the ice and would probably prefer Wotherspoon over him as well going forward even if you take out salary.
