In my mind, this is mainly about what he did from 2018 forward. The turnaround of the franchise is attributable to Dundon in the owner’s suite, Waddell/Borg in the front office, Rod behind the bench, and Williams as captain. Top to bottom, a group who weren’t given much thought or respect around the league, but who each committed to being part of the solution at their own level of influence. That saved the organization from a dark future.

For Williams in particular, his story reminds me a lot of Ron Francis. Back in ‘98, Francis could have gone anywhere he wanted. He chose to come to a team that didn’t have an identity, didn’t really have a fanbase, and had dim prospects of competing. Four years later that team was in the Stanley Cup Finals, fifteen years later he was in the executive suite, and now his name is in the rafters and in our HHOF. Because he actively chose to grow something here.

Williams had a similar story here. He didn’t have to come back to Raleigh. By 2017 organization was such a clown show, and ownership was so weak. It was one of the least attractive destinations in the whole league. Williams actively chose to take that on, understanding how high of a hill the team needed to climb. A couple of years later, they’re in the playoffs with a whole new identity, and a few years after that they’re a powerhouse and Williams is in our HOF.

Add in the iconic ENG to clinch the Cup, and this is a well deserved no-brainer.
