Basically it works like this: Each team gets a certain number of players at each position they can protect. Everyone else eligible will be exposed. So having Jurco become eligible won't help them protect a player, it will simply give Las Vegas another player to choose from.

The situation for the Hawks is a little different. Right now the Hawks only have 2 forwards that fit the minimum eligibility requirements (Hartman and Kruger). If Jurco plays 10 more games and the Hawks re-sign him he would fill the minimum requirements and allow the Hawks to protect Hartman.

I don't know if I buy that as a reason to make this trade though because the Hawks could just re-sign Desi or Tootoo and leave them unprotected to be the 2nd required forward.

So terribly boring to see Miller up again. What is the point? It's as depressing as bringing in Andersson for last PO's. I don't understand this organization. Or worse may be I get their decisions and just loathe everything they do.

What the hell is the point of Miller?

Call up Frk. Call up literally anyone else. Miller is a complete non-factor and will never be anything more than a non-factor. See if maybe *someone* hits a jackpot.

That makes sense. He gives them another eligible player to expose, and in that sense, it would allow them to protect the player they wanted. Thanks.

You want the team to actually start playing potential future assets when the season is over? Weird.

Wings are dead last in ROW with Arizona and Colorado. This team is a dumpster fire, Ken.

Is there a big reward for those guys to re-sign just to be left unprotected for the draft, though? Chances of being picked by Vegas are probably low, but I can see someone not wanting to take that risk when they can just wait it out and try to find some work on the open market.

I want someone to explain to me the logic of Miller right now. I thought it made 1% sense to keep him up when we had a playoff shot. Now it makes 0%. Can't even make the "he's a responsible, proven, veteran who won't give up goals like some fresh rookie." Even if those facts are wrong, at least it was plausible-ish.

Now there's nothing.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. MAKE SENSE, HOLLAND. PLS.

And all of a sudden, Arizona is only 7 points behind Detroit. I know they just unloaded Hanzal, but if the Wings flounder just a little while longer, things might get interesting for the #2 overall pick (at least, heading into lottery night).

Maybe that's the rationale for playing Miller. RealGud players help the draft stock. ;)

A) Wouldn't bringing up a young player now start the clock on their season accruals, bringing their RFA and then UFA windows closer? Why burn up one of those years to have the prospect play on a laboring team?

B) If the team is actually trying to tank, wouldn't bringing up a player who is allegedly worse in Miller be an aid to that?

C) Might be a cap issue, or at least it might have some cap implications.

clock has already started on every player that wings are eligible to callup.

edit. svechnikov's ELC could slide, so don't callup him or have him on the roster for less than 10 games, preventing the slide.

funny enough, that could apply.

C) Might be a cap issue, or at least it might have some cap implications.

miller has higher cap hit than any other player they could callup, so no.

Does it make it easier to trade Miller? He doesn't have to pass through waivers for us to call him up, but would he have to pass through waivers if he was dealt to another team?

1. A few games this year to see what they've got isn't really a big deal.

2. If that were the case, why are we overplaying Zetterberg and not dressing Sproul consistently? Also I doubt Frk is going to be able to win us any games in the few that are left. He's not exactly a blue chip and he's just one player. See what he's got. Wouldn't make much difference to the tank.

3. Which of our prospects cost more than Miller? Miller's contract is 1M. None of the potential call-ups are more than that.

Teams trade for low-level veteran insurance all the time at the TDL. It wouldn't surprise me if some team inquired about Miller and asked to see him in-game tomorrow to see if he can still play at NHL speed. Montreal, Chicago, and Pittsburgh all have pretty bad PKs. Miller isn't exactly a stone wall, but you'd probably rather have him as a back-up for your PK than some non-specialist if your PK is already bad to begin with.

The other reason may just be preservation of Holland's reputation. Bring back up the long-time Red Wing to show you still treat your veterans well.

Jurco was on espn1000 Chicago the Carmen and Jurko show today and it was implied that Ken Holland wanted to keep Jurco but his continued scratching forced his hand into making a deal.
