  • Preds draft video shows Poille (Preds GM) saying Rutherford (Pens GM) told him he could get #23 (Avs 1st) to add to his #22 in a deal for Neal. Avs deal wouldn't have been for Neal since that's the deal the Preds and Pens were working on.

Additional Notes

  • Alan Hepple on Heiskanen. "Offensive has been one of the discussions this week, does he have offense, and things like that, so that's been a bit of a discussion."
    Scouting Report: Heiskanen
  • Alan Hepple compares Heiskanan vs Makar. "They're a bit of different player, came from different backgrounds a little bit. Cale Makar played Alberta junior level this year and Heiskanen played with the men, pro. He didn't get the points, he didn't get the offensive numbers that we thought he would but very good skater, very good puck mover. Cale Makar, probably a little lesser league but again great skater, put up great numbers and a very good puck mover."

  • Alan Hepple implies they may not take Jake Oettenger who's slotted to go in the late 1st to early 2nd when he says "we're always looking for goalies as far as when do you take them, are they in the right spot. European goalies seem to be the big thing now because you get a little more development time. If there's one there, if there's one available at the right time, just like last year like we did with Adam Werner (5th rd) right time in the draft, then we'll do it.
    http://avalanche.nhl.com/v2/ext/podcasts/2017-18/170619-alan-hepple-pre-draft-conference-call.mp3
  • Adrian Dater says, "Talking more with hockey people tonight: Avs are praying Makar is available at No. 4."

  • Bob McKenzie reports that one team had Cale Makar 1st overall in his rankings.
  • Alan Hepple in talking about how they took the best player available with all their pics, that "we feel we got the best player in the draft at four."
    Alan Hepple - June 26
  • Alan Hepple says "we really liked the Joseph kid that got picked. We were maybe thinking him at 32..." Referring to defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph who went 23rd.

I realize I may have ruined it for everyone else but are we discussing the current front office's performance in this thread? I know we don't want this to turn into a shouting match but I think we could have some constructive criticism/praise/analysis of the current situation in here that doesn't necessarily pertain to player personnel.

My initial thoughts...should the Avs be taking a good long look at Craig Billington? He has largely escaped criticism, and maybe that's fair since he wasn't getting very good draft stock to develop, and the organization as a whole has taken a VERY long time to build an actual pipeline through their minor-league affiliates. But...if the guy is in charge of player development, doesn't some of this fall on his shoulders as well? I'm not by any means campaigning for his firing, just wondering why during several regime changes and outright failures that he has risen in the ranks, despite there not being much evidence of his being successful.

I think that's a fair criticism. It's hard to tell as an outsider how much can be attributed to Biller though. He seems to care a lot, he's smart, and invested.

My guess is they weren't as hands on as they should have been development wise in the past, but that might have started to change the last couple years, as they've added more development guys (at least publicly) like Brett Clark and Brian Willsie who have flown in and spent time with the prospects.

It's possible it was a monetary and budget issue though. I think one of the best things Roy and Sakic did was emphasize the importance of less talked about roles within the organization. Amateur scouting in Europe. Scouting in CHL leagues outside the OHL. Development specialists. The state of the AHL team. Pro scouting in Europe to bring in free agents. I think a lot of this came from Roy's experience in running his Remparts, and knowing the important roles within.

I don't think they liked spending much money on these things in the past, but ownership kind of considered Sakic and Roy as an investment marketing wise, and Roy had to pull a lot of weight in this area. In return they got to spend more internally than they would have normally.

I can't really argue anything there. If the legacy of Sakic and Roy ends up being the fact that the organization finally put real money/effort toward the development of legit NHLers when before it was an afterthought, then it was more than worth bringing them aboard.

Development seems to be getting better but it's really tough to say who is responsible for it. MacFarland held the same position as Billington, which is the FO exec who is the GM of the AHL, so I'd wager some of the improvements came from him but who knows. Billington has been around since 2001, I think it's just time to freshen up the FO. I've also heard he's not very personable and he did not come off well any time he visited SA or LE. Of course that doesn't matter as much if he does a great job but we aren't sure about that. I would like MacFarland to take the reins in the development department or put someone in charge that he chooses. Like I said, I'm not going to pin all the failures on Billington but he's also never shown any reason to continue on with him in charge either.

The on ice development camp was a huge step and even a scrimmage this last year! Also, the rookie tournament was getting with modern times. I don't mind the more carmraderie and team building focus they seem to have rather than bringing in 20 invites but they are players and they want to get on the ice and compete a bit so I think it's definitely a step in the right direction. I was reading back from like 2011 and they didn't even have a rookie training camp! It's baby steps in the right direction but there's no reason why it has to be baby steps either. Development is important right now. They also held on to Chynoweth way too long, not sure why that had to happen.

Something has to change with pro scouting. Either the scouts are bad or the front office are bad at listening. You can't sign players hoping they'll be much more than they ever been. It's rarely the case.

At least this summer's signings were shorter even though two years and $4.5M to Colborne is kinda brutal.

I feel like Sakic and Roy waited on Chynoweth because they wanted to give him a legit shot, and felt he hadn't had one to that point. Once they had seen enough, they swung the axe. That's speculation on my part though.

Whoever looked at Brad Stuart and said that guy was still NHL material better be sucked out the nearest airlock and then some. At least it appears that they really are utilizing analytics as those definitely influenced one of their offseason moves (Wiercioch). But yeah, the Colborne move is looking really, really bad right now. I think it will look better once they jettison Grigorenko. The two of them on the same roster is redundant--they are almost the exact same type of player.

Yeah, overhauling pro scouting would be my number one priority. That has been abysmal, they've taken way too many swing-for-the-fences gambles on has-beens and never-weres and we are paying the price now. Analytics is only part of the solution, they need guys who can use their eyes and brains to find both a good player and a good fit for the team.

I think pro scouting is an issue, but to me I think it's more an issue of direction from above. Look at the kind of players they're adding that are failing. Most of them are cheapish stop gaps. Especially on the blueline.

A big part of it is half assed attempts to improve the roster.

IMO this is a bigger issue than the pro scouting. The pro scouts have found some useful players that have played roles here. Have they been perfect? No, but they'd look a lot better if Sakic had been more aggressive.

The mistake with Colborne is more about him being in the doghouse and Bednar not giving him a real shot than it is on the pro scouts. Colborne has a bit of a NHL history and has shown he can put up points in a role... he is just a player that you need to live with his deficiencies to get value out of him.

The trouble with JC is that he is what we already have in spades and a poor fit with the team. I've been talking about that for a while, but the team looks like someone pulled random names from a hat. Built without a plan and direction.

I think it looks that way because the Avs FO is afraid to make the bigger moves to get the players they really want, but yeah, they have too many half measures that have similar problems.

It's a problem. But it's also a problem that ameture scouting still can't seem to find us any NHL players beyond the 2nd round to fill out the bottom lines. When a team is forced to fill out those lines with free agents, this is what tends to happen.

I'm not sure I agree on Colborne, but I do agree on Sakic not being aggressive enough. I think he's too afraid to make a mistake, especially on a core player deal. He doesn't want to be the guy that deals Duchene or somebody else. He might not be either if he steps down in the summer and they wait until then to make a move.

I just don't know what he thought was gonna happen the last two years especially, after seeing the d core he put out there. There's some stuff in the pipeline, but not really enough to think they will fix the d core by themselves. They might not end up high end enough, and they won't be developed enough until a few years down the road. They'd have to do something to improve the blueline, and Joe just seemed unwilling to commit. He seemed to want to get by on stop gaps and wait, and wait, and wait for......I'm not sure what.

I know he didn't think the guys he brought in were the answer. It's like a lot of the team aspects with Roy. These guys aren't stupid. They can see the problems even better than we can. I'm just not sure what Joe was expecting to happen.

This uber patient approach was clearly going to outlast their tenure because the lack of success would force them out before then, and it looks like that's what could happen. Except it likely will end with a core player trade as well, which is what he was trying to avoid. So the patient approach by itself never was gonna fix the issue to begin with.

I think Colborne is the type of guy much like Kyle Wellwood (who was/is a very similar type of player except for the fact that Wellwood is about a foot shorter), a guy who, in order to be effective, has to be paired with players who will do the dirty work, dig in the corners, hit, etc. And that's the problem--the Avs have too many players like Colborne. Anywhere you put Joe Colborne in this lineup he's with a similar player (Bourque, Grigorenko--who may as well be a Russian clone of Colborne, Soderberg, etc.) except for the 4th line, where there's sufficient grit but the skill is lacking so then you've got the other problem in that Colborne isn't effective at all in a 4th-line grinder role.

Take a look at what Sam Gagner is doing in Columbus. I don't think he just suddenly started caring, he's just now surrounded by a lot of skilled AND tough players who create space for him and feed him the puck, and as a result he's putting up better numbers than he's ever had. I guarantee you Colborne would be flourishing in the same role in Lumbus, and conversely, Gagner would be press box fodder in Colorado.

Adding Colborne, Wiercioch, and Tyutin wouldn't have been viewed so poorly on any other team, but to add three slow and rather soft (Tyutin's not soft but he's not really a banger either) players on a team that's already way too slow and soft just magnified this team's weaknesses rather than addressed them.

It's like this team made all the wrong moves the past three years, then made some right ones, but they needed to get rid of those wrong moves FIRST. That make any sense?

1st - Mikko Rantanen (10) over Lawson Crouse (11), Mathew Barzal (16), and Kyle Conner (17)[\quote]

It is my opinion M.Sakic is the winner.

2nd - AJ Greer (39) and Nicolas Meloche (40) over Jeremy Roy (31 - Avs traded pick), Daniel Sprong (46) , Jansen Harkins (47), Rasmus Andersson (53), and Oliver Kylington (60)

Here is equal. Meloche is much better than Roy. Anderson will be better and tougher than Nico in a long time.. Greer is much better than Sprong, Harkins and Kylington.

For this draft, M Sakic is a winner. This is my opinion.

I think the problem is that most of these types of players that tend to not engage physically much, or float around a bit, and just generally not bring it on a consistent basis, they can only be so good in the NHL. You can get some success with the right line mates in the fashion you're talking about, but it's almost a lightning in a bottle scenario.

They'll tease you every now and then with a good full season, and they'll tempt you to think they're starting to figure it out. When really that's not the beginning of showing what they're capable of it's the end. That's the high water mark, and most seasons won't be near that level.

Unfortunately that might have been Colborne's season last year. Or on the micro level, his first game this year. I think a lot of it comes down to them getting comfortable too easily. They don't have that drive to bring it every night, whether they're playing well or not. They get comfortable and think they're good enough to get by without working hard.

My biggest fear when it comes to Sakic is that he can't be ruthless, and that's a must for any GM. You can't care about a player's feelings if the axe has to be swung. It doesn't matter how good a guy is in the room, or if he has an A on his jersey, if he's not cutting it, then he must be waived/benched/replaced.

I feel like Sakic won't do what needs to be done with guys like Beauchemin and McLeod, and that's a fatal flaw. I can't help but think he's too nice to be a good GM.

I don't think either guy on the team is a fatal flaw really. Beauch has been terrible, but he only has one year left. The season's done, it doesn't matter what they do. All things being equal, he might be serviceable as a #5/6 guy if they can finally build a decent top 4. They won't have much cap issues next year so his salary isn't an issue. Same with McLeod, he's not making or breaking this team's problems on the 4th line.

I think there's a lot of truth to what you said, but more in terms of the bigger moves that he hasn't been aggressive enough to make.

Well, the point is, he's not even making the small moves, so yeah, he might not be willing to make the big ones either. More and more I think he's just indecisive.

And I don't think Beauchemin would be serviceable if you plucked the best defensemen from the top five teams in the league and surrounded him with them. He's the worst defenseman on the team and making a strong case for worst defenseman in the league. He should have been sent to the press box (or home) a LONG time ago.

I don't think it's indecisive, that's the product of trying to satisfy competing and building at the same time and having no clear vision or plan or at least conflicting ones. What can he do all under presumably one plan and direction, should he have one, we don't know yet. Is he just gun shy or was he trying to satisfy different people and interests?

Aside from the O'Reilly trade - in which his hand was forced - Sakic has made no big trades. He has no stamp on the team.

Most dislike Greg Shermans tenure - including me - but give the guy credit for going out and bringing in key players.

Sakic, meanwhile, has basically nickel and dimed the club to death, replacing lost talent (Stastny, O'Reilly) with washed up veterans/low upside free agents.

I'm guilty of liking (most) of his moves at face value, but the overall product when the dust has settled has been horrendous.

This is why Sakic is the worse GM in the league:

In 3+ seasons, Nikita Zadorov is literally the ONLY player on the current roster that he's acquired via a signing or trade who you would actually want on the team long-term (and it was at the expense of Ryan O'Reilly so the net gain of good players is zero). He did acquire Compher and Greer via a pick in that same trade and those guys are gonna be NHLers I think but not sure if they turn into high impact players and the jury's out on them since they're still prospects.

Also our worse players....all Sakic acquisitions or re-signings (McLeod and Mitchell).

I'm willing to give Sakic another year. I want to see if he can build a proper team for Bednar's system.

What system? People were saying the same thing a couple seasons ago replacing Bednar with Roy.

Bednar's system requires fast tenacious FWDs and very good puck moving dmen that think quick on their feet...we don't have much of either.
