I thought Novotny didn't do that bad in Washington, it looked like he played a building two-way game and he had some creativity. I'd sign him, AHL him for a season or two (might as well?) Daigneault's been around to long, he won't do anything in the NHL.

Daigneault is a year younger than Novotny, FWIW.

Both fell victim of a numbers game it seems, particularly if Washington has indeed already decided that Neuvirth will play in Hershey next season. That remains to be seen, though, as at this point all we know is that the Caps have him under contract. Daigneault put up some pretty good numbers in his first AHL season but was fortunate in that he had a good team in front of him and played quite a few games against below average AHL clubs.

Not sure how Novotny falls into this, he's not a goalie, like Daigneault and Neuvirth. I also thought Novotny did well with the caps last year. I thought he had potential to be a second line center.

*EDIT* I just checked his stats, he actually didn't do that great, but he was a first rounder, and is only 23, seems weird to let him go for nothing. Why not send him to the minors?

Because Novotny didn't show scoring-line potential and that was the only way he was going to etch a position for himself in the Caps lineup. Third- and fourth-line center are already pretty well locked up by Gordon and Sutherby.

Tough to do, when you only play 18 games!! How many minutes a game was he playing?

Found this on NHL.com

"Has six assists in 17 games since joining the Caps, second on the team in assists in that time (Semin has 9)"

Not many Caps were showing scoring line potential as you put it!

Yeah...particularly when it's the end of a disappointing season. But he did get an opportunity to play with Ovechkin and at other times with Semin as well. He was also coming off of an injury which probably hampered him somewhat. I thought he'd get one last shot to prove himself at camp this fall but it's not all that suprising. He was benched at one point and didn't show enough consistency and determination.

He typically played around 15 minutes a game, though less so towards the very end of the year.

No, that was definitely the case by that point. But with Backstrom coming over and (hopefully) another scoring-line center to come via trade or free agency, he just wasn't in the cards.

I'm more surprised about the letting go of Daigneault. I konw he showed up to one camp out of shape and apparently is lazy, but it seemed he really tightened up his play and were it not for him (most likely) during that time when Cassivi was in the NHL Hershey might not have done as well as they did. He's most likely destined to be a good backup if he makes it to the NHL, which I would have been okay with since we have two potentially great starters in Neuvirth and Varlamov coming up. I would have kept him as the backup behind whichever prospect they choose. Oh well.

As you mention, with Neuvirth and Varlamov coming in soon, the Caps have two goalies to vie for the 'goalie of the future' mantle. To add to that, Kolzig and Johnson are both signed with the Caps, and I assume Cassivi and Machensey are both signed as well.

Can't keep everyone. I imagine Daigneault will catch on eslewhere in the AHL as a backup / split starter.
