It is clear to me and not only for cap reasons, trading Buff next year or year after would be a good play by Jets management. I am Buff fan, but his spot on the Jets will soon be a financial and production liability.

I will also make you a gentleman's bet that Dano is not on our roster next year.

I don't expect these to be perfect. I'm trying for reasonable.
In both years the top 5 listed F and top 4 listed D are existing contracts so there is no variability.

In 2019 it doesn't look too bad. A couple of players who are going to be expensive are still on their ELC's, even if next contracts have already been signed. The potential bonus money could be a problem.

In 2020 the Low and Mid cases use some bridge deals to keep the total down. Look necessary to me unless the cap takes another big jump. Bonus doesn't look to be a problem.

Note that Myers is not there in '20. He needs to either have been traded or allowed to walk. The obvious time to trade him is this off season in which case '19 is easier - there is room for the bonus.

If not Myers, then someone else will have to move.

However flawed these projections may be, I think they illustrate the problem Chevy will be facing. There can be a lot of different scenarios of moving one player or another but there is no room to acquire any player with a substantial contract unless some cap hit is moved out. Not referring to rentals here.

Let me know if you spot errors.

Feel free to try and squeeze a few $$$ out here and there. I don't think there is much wiggle room.

Discuss away. :)

Hopefully we get a cap rise of at least $80. All I know is Buff makes way to much for this team and his role going forward.
If Trouba is resigned, Buff is on his way out, imo.

I think by the end of Trouba’s injury we will see that added minutes to Myers and Buff is not a winning formula. Those extra minutes expose too many flaws in their games.

My theory is they trade people and replace them with players on ELCs

Maybe its Perrault or Connor or Buff or Trouba or Copp or whoever but that is what is going to happen. Just get used to it.

In the end if they end up with more 1st round picks and with the way they select first round picks we will replace players as they go.

A lot of this will also depend on post-season success. If we win a cup in the next two years, we are f***ed.

Nice job. I like how you built sensitivity into your projections. I think your Trouba projections are a tad optimistic but nice job all the same, Chevy will have his work cut out for him next summer.

Morrissey = Bridge Deal

Just sayin'

You seem set on this, why? It doesn't save the Jets much in the way of space the next two years on a top pairing player. After we are paying 7 million, not worth it to me. I sell the more expensive depth before short changing a core player.

If Trouba is resigned Buff HAS to go. Wheeler is a tricky part here because he may want a raise, in which case we should trade him as well. It will come down to who we want our core to be. I'd imagine Perreault is also moved out in time to make way for a winger core of Laine/Connor/Roslovic/Ehlers/Vesalainen/Armia

Anyone who thinks we are holding onto the aging vet core forever is going to be in for a rude awakening. It would be a dumb move and a good way to kill any type of momentum we'd be gaining as a franchise.

I'd really love to have this problem. And if it should come to pass, I'd like Chevy to move on from the older vets, reinvest in more youth to support the young core and go on a couple more cup runs.

I think even if we don't win a cup but have some decent playoff runs we might even be in trouble.

I only give it as an option. I'm not saying it should or shouldn't happen only that people shouldn't close their minds to the possibility.

It's a way to manage the cap by keeping his AAV down for a couple more years. It's something cap teams are forced to do sometimes. We look like a cap team in the future. Some of our RFA players will need bridge deals by necessity. There are many moving parts in capology.

For long term success at least IMO we will need to move older vets rather than being overly attached. Cap space will need to be freed up as we go.

I agree that some of the youth will be need to be bridged but a top pairing dmen is one of the most important pieces you can have. More important than a first line winger like Ehlers imo and we inked him long term. I think wingers like Connor and Armia are lower on the totem pole imo.

My philosophy is core centers, dmen, goalies first. Wingers second!

The Jets might have a different way of doing the jigsaw puzzle. Lots of D men have been bridged. Personally it doesn't matter how it gets done as long as all the pieces fit together.

Mo is more important than Connor Ehlers and is near the top of the list of players we need to sign long term. He is our number 1 D which makes him one of the most important pieces we have. Then pick one or two forwards and Helly then you have your core. The rest are depth and trade who you need to. Ehlers/Connor/ Laine would all fetch you a treasure trove of prospects and first round picks if you need to. Then move on from Buff when you can as he is no longer your #1. I may be wrong on the last point I don't think so but I am biased.

They already signed Ehlers long term. Not sure why he's relevant here. A bridge deal for Morrissey isn't the end of the world. It's not like he's about to turn into a Norris trophy winner. He barely gets PP time.

A long term deal for a Morrissey is certainly a very real possibility but so is a bridge

If this stage of the franchise does come to be, then we may have to get used to watching many of those older guys walk away as free agents instead of getting assets back for them. Most vets would likely to be kept for hopeful deep playoff runs. At least that cap space will free up. Hopefully we will still be able to draft gems like we have so far from a later spot in the draft that will be worth large hits to the cap.

Simple, just because you have signed him doesn't mean you can't trade him if the rest of the budget doesn't fall in line. Don't get me wrong I don't want to lose any of our guys Ehlers is definitely near the top of my list of guys I want to keep, but, a #1 is D is more important and I think Mo will be that guy if given the chance. Yes, he barely gets PP time, right now, but, Buff is aging and I think Mo is better offensively than Trouba.

I'm not worried about the cap situation for the Jets. Chevy has done a great job when resigning players to contract extensions, he has made trades that have beneficial to the team and the Jets have drafted well. I am confident that he will know how to address any cap issues that will arise in the coming years.
