Salary Cap: Jets 2019: roster and cap situation

Let's do nothing to improve.

Your use of robbing indicates on how you perceive how the Jets should proceed this off season and going forward. Thankfully it is just that, your opinion and by no means is that the correct or only way to move ahead.

It's not robbing, it's replacing a high salary player(s) that aren't as much of a key player(s) at their positions with one(s) that are. Then filling those spots with in team replacements that cost far less and and thus allow you to fill a needed position with a higher salaried addition.

Myers replaced by Poolman, Perreault replaced by Lemieux or Vesalainen or Petan or Appleton. Jets get assets in return they want and salary cap space.

Stastny or similar 2C, replacement W and Poolman over Perreault, Myers and no real 2C.

You may have favourite players you don't want to move which is fine but not pertinent to making the roster the best it can be. Jets have positioned themselves to have flexibility and young talent ready to replace older costly players. Planning like that allows spending dollars on a player, position that makes more of an impact.

Nashville believed they needed to improve at C, went out and got 3 centres, unrealistic to think the Jets will not prioritize the 2C position. I should say again, as they did with trying to get Brassard and actually getting Stastny.

Good points, that's the way it works in this day and age with the cap. Move higher priced assets for something in return and ensure you have a strong pipeline to replenish. Chicago was doing this all the time until recently and Pittsburgh has done it well lately.

The issue with Myers and Perreault is that neither is going to return a higher impact player at centre. You are not getting a RNH calibre player for either one of those guys.

As for the replacements, Lemieux will never be a Perreault. Petan is either traded at the draft or off to Europe, no way he resigns with the Jets. KV is likely to start next year with the Moose to adjust to North American hockey, so most likely Appleton at the start of the season. So the options at the start of the season at least are limited.

I would not go out of my way and pay Stastny big dollars at his age and stage of his career. If he's willing to take a haircut for a chance at winning, fine, but if not, then move on.

PP2:

Morrissey-Vesalainen

Moves:
-Trade Myers, Mason, Petan to free up cap space and re-acquire 1st round pick in this year
You forgot Perreault who needs to go to Ottawa or Montreal. Also it will be Trouba that is gone and Myers will stay here long term. True north last season impressed Myers with how they handled his injury and issues his baby had. He may give them a bit of a I want to stay here discount like Ehlers and Schiefele did.

As much as you right about the guy who wants to be here, Trouba is a much better player.

Good point. They seem to really like Trouba as well though. I'd hate to have to make these decisions.

Not that I want to get rid of him, but, is Kulikov a candidate for LTIR?

If not he's a buyout option if we were desperate.. cap hit would only be 1.44 for 4 years

It’ll be interesting to see if Kulikov goes the way of Grant Clitsome. In other years it would be a nightmare. Now we actually have some depth on the blue line.

Hard to imagine Chevy not keeping this team as is intact for the next year or two. We have no glaring holes to fill. Can he pull of retaining this exact roster minus the odd Matthias or Hendricks?

Hope he's ready next year as it would go along way to helping the team's salary cap problems.

What problems? This has been a false narrative all season.

Jets have NO cap problems in 2018-2019.

-Laine, Copp, Roslovic will continue to be on ELC's.
-The only UFA we'd consider resigning at his current value would be Stastny
-9 RFA's, many of which will break the bank in the slightest (Lowry,Armia, Tanev,Dano,Morrow,Poolman). Only Hellebuyck, Morrissey, Trouba will garnish raises. Morrissey may even bridge.
-The cap is going up.
-we have a number of Moose that are in line for promotion on ELC's as well. Niku would be the best example.

We are fine. Bring this up again in 12-24 months.

Stastny's 7m contract is 50% retained by the Blues this year.
Lowry's AAV is only 1.125m...he will get a nice raise.

For next year, assume Stastny is not resigned.

Connor/Scheifele/Wheels - $12.8 mill
Ehlers/Little/Laine - $12.2 mill
Perreault/Roslovic/Armia - $7 mill
Copp/Lowry/Tanev - $5 mill
PB#1, PB#2 - $1.5 mill

Or about $38.5 mill for forwards.

Morrissey/Trouba - $11.0 mill
Morrow/Buff - $8.5 mill
Kulikov/Myers - $9.8 mill
Chiarot/Poolman - $2.3 mill

Or about $31.6 mill for defensemen.

Hellebuyck- $5.5 mill
Mason - $4.1 mill

Or about $9.6 mill for goalies.

That totals $79.7 million.

With performance bonuses for Laine, Connor, and maybe Roslovic there needs to be a some movement this summer. Myers? Mason? Perreault?

Vesalainen might be the best replacement option for Perreault, from a role and salary perspective.

Do you think anyone offers Stastny $7 million? Still a hell of a player, he'll go to a contender and Winnipeg is as likely as anywhere. Jets can afford an offer in the neighbourhood of $5.5 million. If he doesn't sign there's even less to worry about regarding cap space.

Lowry's AAV is only 1.125m...he will get a nice raise

He'll likely get double, so as said it won't break the bank. Do you think he gets over $3million?

Most posting in the free agent speculation thread are in agreement that worries begin in 2019-2020.

With that said decisions being made this summer will certainly have long term implications.

Counting bonus' and signing RFA's at the highest end while still signing Stastny to $5.5AAV still has us at $82million, what many feel will be the cap for next year. Modest RFA offers keep us in the neighbourhood of $79 million in and around the lower end of the proposed cap increase.

There's a whole thread dedicated to this. No need to hijack this one. Simply pointed out that the sky wasn't falling next season.

Some have overstated the problem. It is the next year when the real crunch hits. But it is wrong to say that we have "NO cap problems in 2018-2019". Once bonuses are provided for, we do have a problem unless the cap goes up higher than 80 mil.

Bridging Morrissey would buy a little breathing room. I'd rather see him locked up. He will only get more expensive in the future.

No, I don't think anyone offers him 7m. I was responding to your comment that the only UFA we'd consider re-signing at his current value would be Stastny. This is why I pointed out we are only paying him 3.5m and the Blues are picking up the other 50%.
I don't think he gets 7m but he will get more than 3.5m.
I doubt Lowry gets over 3m but even if he gets 2.875m, that is still a 1.75m increase. Every little million helps you know.
I do agree that Chevy won't have any problems this upcoming season and I doubt we do in the future either. New players on ELCs will help in that matter and moving players like Myers and MP will help our pipeliine to remain as good as it has been hopefully. Moving MP and/or Myers isn't going to hurt as much as some think.
It is Laine's and Wheeler's contracts that are going to get the big bucks and probably Trouba's too.

You’ve moved Myers in your example, and we’re still close to being a cap team with bonuses.

Not disagreeing with the Myers move, only pointing out a move like that is necessary to have some breathing room with the cap.

Yes. Trouba is signed long term so Myers is moved. If Trouba signs an arbitrator awarded contract, there would still not be room for Myers' 5.5 mil but I would then expect Trouba to be moved. I don't believe it is a realistic option to keep both.

Even with Myers gone, there really isn't any breathing room unless the cap goes up to more than 80 mil.

thought the belief was that Trouba would get a long term deal and Moz would be bridged.

Bridging Mo is something I'm opposed to. Having a young 1d is as important as Connor or Ehlers.

I would rather not bridge Morrissey. It is an option though.

Bridging or not bridging a young player is not entirely at the team's choice. If the offer is not high enough his agent may prefer to see him bridged also.

Nope, but, I'd like there to be at least the possibility of a long term deal within our budget. If K-Ves can walk right into the NHL it gives the Jets that option.
