William Nylander plays 75% of his shifts with Matthews: ‘elite player, what did I just read, watch players before you judge’

Leon Draisaitl plays 50% of his shifts with McDavid ‘lol just a product of McDavid, overrated, cant produce on his own’

Mmmkay boys.

Wow who would think that Draisitl would be better with Mcdavid and Nylander would be better with Matthews.

As a neutral fan all four of these players are good. Of course Nylander and Drai will have increased production playing with Matthews/McDavid. They’re good on their own but better with elite talent.

It’s almost like players are better when they play with good players. What a hot take

Had my doubts since Kekalainen passed on him. He doesn't handle the puck well, doesn't compete particularly hard, and lacks any real assertiveness in the offensive zone. Tools are great only if you can use them, maybe JP learns eventually as he is still really young, but the things he needs to work on the most are really hard to get better at. Some games I've seen him barely able to take a pass.

Knowing the Oilers they will continue to play him 9 minutes a night or whatever and sit him in the pressbox after a bad game. Crush his confidence even more and just hope he gets better next year.

What post is this? I would be happy to discuss it more with you if you have the capability of going into more detail?

This thread reminds me of the Barzal thread where some blue and white fans actually inferred he was a bust when he was sent back to junior in his D+2. This is going to be such a nice thread to bump down the line.
Yeah almost like the time that one netural fan ranked Marner as the #9 pick from the 2015 draft and had Lawson Crouse ahead of him.

Don't think he ever brought that up again.

Good post. Oilers have been a mess this year to pretty much everyone's surprise. Puljujarvi is not in the most ideal situation. For those that have watched him play, he has actually progressed well this year. Looks far more assertive, and you can see it will be just a matter of time he turns into a 35-35, 70 pts player. He will not be a bust. The intentions of Bumping this thread yesterday were obvious. But do not worry, I read the same thing that inferred Barzal was busting when he was 19 also. And we know how that turned out. I am confident Puljujarvi will make this thread bump worthy in the future. Just wait. It's going to be glorious.

What intentions were those? I was curious how Puljujarvi was faring, I'm not aware of a more recent topic on him in this forum.

I'm not calling him a bust, so I don't know why you seem to frame it like that.

As for the Oilers, their play is less of a surprise to some of us. But there's no need to rehash summer arguments about Lucic and Hall or how Chiarelli has managed the team, it's pretty clear now who proved prescient in those debates.

I don't think Puljujarvi is a bust at all at this point.

He definitely hasn't lived up to the potential of being a top 5 pick so far but you can definitely see that there are some flashes of high end skill in there. His hockey IQ is where he seems to be lacking at this point but that could also be related to moving to another continent as a teenager.

he will once Crouse has a breakout preseason game

Boys - this is like going to a 12 year old's birthday party and arguing with him about his favourite hockey team. Don't stoop down to his level. He's an infant.

This is a Puljujarvi thread. Puljujarvi has been struggling since he was drafted 4th overall but he's still super young.

I have maintained the position that Puljujarvi is a bust and won't live up to any of his hype. Sticking with it.

It's a thread about Puljujarvi having a potential breakout season after 3 pts in a preseason game. It deserves to be ridiculed

How so? Did you read the OP? The Oilers were one of the favourites to do well this year. Puljujarvi and McDavid clicked where Puljujarvi scored 3 goals. And a question was asked for discussion was this the beginning of the makings of a star player in the making. No assertion was made it was. Even you quoted 'possible'. When do 19 year olds make a NHL team, when do they make a statement that they belong in NHL? Preaseason correct? So why was it ridiculous given the context of the thread. There is only one fanbase here that seem to take delight in the Oilers struggles this year, and they have decided to make this thread a beehive of it. Like I said, this will be a glorious bump in the future like the Barzal thread was. But I do see some are hedging their bets now. lol

Draisaitl won memorial cup MVP when he and his trusty security blanket McDavid... wait, what?
This is the most irrelevant response I’ve ever read...

You implied Nylander can’t do anything without Matthews. He won MVP in a Worlds Mens tournament without Matthews.

On topic...

Puljujarvi is producing very poorly given the hype and where he was drafted. He doesn’t bring much to his team. All this in spite of his breakout preseason game.

Yes, I’m sure Nylander was playing with slugs on team Sweden. It’s just funny the mental loopholes you guys will jump through.

I guess you’d happily say that a guy like Connor Brown is producing very poorly as well, too, then?

No, no, that guy is a lynchpin in a trade for a top six forward despite being on pace for a whopping 29 points...

Pretty sure you guys might need a player like Connor brown who’s good defensively AND P.K. specialist ;)

Sure we do - I’ll give you a 2nd for him. But no, it’s always Brown + Crap + Meh for other teams best players.

Funny you mention good defensively - Puljujarvi? Also very good defensively.

Good players play well with other good players. Nylander was the best on his team. That is why he won MVP. I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make here. You’re putting Nylander down because someone offended you with their comments regarding Draisaitl. How old are you?

Brown isn’t producing as well as I hoped this year, but he’s playing a very important role with our team so I’m not disappointed. He brings full effort every night and is trusted in a lot of situations for us.

I personally wouldn’t like to see Brown traded, he has more value to the Leafs than other teams. I don’t think he has the value to acquire a Top 6 forward.

He’s a good depth player but I don’t think anyone over values him, but i might be wrong.

Are you ok?

Just fine thanks. Are you happy you’re in a thread running down a 19 year old? Are you that thin skinned?

I don't think the person with 49,000+ posts on an internet forum should be talking about 'low points'.

You are the definition. Cheers.

He's gotta put as much distance as he can between the posts from when he got laughed off the Leafs board. If it happened 50k posts ago it basically didn't happen right?

You’re in the same thread? Puljujarvi is not playing as well as he can, he’s a prospect and we are on a prospect discussion board, in a thread for Puljujarvi. If he were playing better or making more of an impact for his team, I would say such.

He’s only 19, he is not a bust by any means, but perhaps his ceiling and potential should be re-evaluated.

Edit: I edited my previous post removing “Are you ok?”. It was childish and I was looking for a reaction. I apologize.

Hahaha. Jesus Christ.

You're very specific as to what you respond to eh?

Remember when the Leafs were going to be docked a 1st round pick for cheating Lupul?
Or remember when the leafs faceing Tampa was going to be a real test and will show us where the leafs truly stand....leafs win and .....cricket....
