Was bored one day and decided to check out his stats.

Before the 94-95 lockout he managed to put up 4 straight 90 point seasons (including 3 straight of 100+) and 40+ goals all 4 of those years. However after the lockout he never cracked 80 points or 40 goals again in a season for the rest of his career.

Why was there such a big drop off in the numbers?
How much of an impact did the dead puck era make on his game?
Was there any significant injuries?

Most of his production drop is tied directly to the overall 30% drop in league scoring during the 1990s. By the late 1990s, it was simply no longer possible for anyone but Jagr to cross the 100-point barrier.

He was actually stellar and played some of the best hockey of his career for Phoenix from 1998-2001 but because of the overall league scoring drop his numbers don't look as impressive. For ie., his 107 points in 1992-93 were only good for 15th but his 78 points in 1999-00 were good for 11th in the league.

In that 1999-00 season, if he hadn't missed 7 games he would have been on target to finish top-5 in league scoring.

He did have a knee injury from a Derian Hatcher hit, and lost some of his explosiveness on the rush, but at the same time he also seemed to get physically stronger and have a deadlier release on his shot during his Phoenix years.

He was a player who peaked at 24 years old. Call it injuries if you want, and that's fair, but if this is 1994 he is among the top 10 players in the NHL. He was never at level the remainder of his career dead puck era or not.

^ above, ms claims jr's best years to be in phoenix. that goes against the usual narrative about him, but i didn't see much of those him there so i can't comment.

but i do wonder whether roenick looked better relative to his peers early on because post-'93, you had a wave of players most of them the same age or younger who came into their own and passed him-- fedorov, bure, mogilny, jagr, lindros, forsberg, sakic, selanne, kariya, etc. that would push him down from being a top ten scorer in the league to a top twenty guy.

League scoring caused most of the drop in numbers, but JR's ability to play that half step faster than most was totally ruined by that Hatcher hit. He came back from that injury and was ineffectual in the playoffs to say the least (only 3 points in 8 games, and 3 games without even registering a shot - it would be his least productive playoffs between his rookie year and turning 32), and starting the very next season we saw PPG JR instead of 1.3 PPG JR. His speed hindered, combined with defensemen grabbing everything they could catch, he struggled to get off 200 shots in full seasons, whereas he was easily topping 200 during his buildup years. He definitely started dishing more pucks instead of taking defenders on one-on-one as much as he used to; which was a strength that contributed greatly to his 40-50 goal seasons.

He was particularly amazing in the early-mid 90's version of Sega Genesis's NHL hockey. What a game.
