The Mavs are a worse team for not having him on the roster, but this contract is far too much for a guy who is good but not great.
But it's like everything is going on everywhere else. And here are the Knicks. Doing stuff no one else is looking at.

I feel like the Knicks live on a different planet than everyone else

It's the wrong direction for the franchise...we should be tanking instead of trying to do the Miami / Toronto / San Antonio thing...but in a league where superstars are paid over 50M, 26M isn't bad for a starting PG who can be the third option on a contender.

And our youth desperately needs a starting PG, whether we end up building with them or flipping them for a 1st & 2nd option...though obviously the hope is that RJ is growing into that second option.

Luckily the east is so strong that we won't make the playoffs unless RJ takes a major leap, and this year we'll have the ammo to move up; the way we couldn't for Ivey.

I mean, great for him for cashing in but is he really gonna make the Knicks a contender in the East?

No, but we also aren't bringing him in to make us contenders. Just to give us a good starting PG for the first time in ages, because our kids need that whether we're trying to develop them or flip them.

If that + internal growth from our kids gets us into the playoffs with the east as deep as it, then so be it...but odds are we're back in the lotto next year with a handful of spare picks to play with.
