Brouwer was actually really good. Loved when he stuck up for one of our players (forgot who) after he got cheapshoted after the whistle. Versteeg was really poor. Monahan was pretty absent outside of OT. Just a slow starter I guess

Frolik was probably our best player behind Tkachuk. That line saved our asses, pretty reminiscent of last year.

Well, the fact that they’re really our only true reliable line goes a long way.

I don’t like the first lines’ two-way play. Johnny’s the best defensive player of the three and he’s really only an exceptional transitional defender. Sam’s line... I mean, with Jagr they’ll hold the puck a lot now; but Steeger’s pretty much a PP specialist and Jagr is an offensive guy who just wants to go the other way; Sam’s the best defensive guy on that line... and he’s the child of the line.

The 4th line is normally really bad, but was good tonight.

It’s hard to argue with winning; but I’d like to see
Johnny - Bennett - Jagr
3M
Versteeg - Monny - Lazar
Ferly/Glass - Sranan - Ferly/Brouwer

Given a better opportunity than a single period.

bipartisan fan here.
how did jagr look tonight?
i realize it's his first game, but just curious.

Not up to game speed yet, but plenty of good glimpses of exciting things to come. The 3 gen line was a mess but showed some super interesting plays and chemistry as well. I'm willing to give those guys time to figure things out. I'm happy with what Jagr has brought off ice as well as his limited glimpse on ice tonight.

IMO Jagr's having issues with his new skates. He fell down too many times.

I wonder if Smith will get tired (frustrated) of having to face 40 shots a night, or if he freaking loves it! I hope he can play this well facing 20-25 shots a night and isn’t one of those tendys that needs to be active to play well.

Hopefully Smith gets a break against Ottawa or Vancouver. Dude's had to be at 110% to start the season, otherwise we might have been 0-4-0

I think I'd rather shift it around so that Monahan still has high end linemates since he's so good at sealing the deal. But that top line is way too sexy to pass up.

The more shots Smith faces, the better he plays. Gulutzan's new system is allowing as many shots as possible to keep Smith sharp. It's like reverse psychology or something

I think he sorta loves it.

Pardon the pun, but IMO I think Smith loves playing behind a fiery team. He'll face 40 shots with a smile if the team in front of him goes to war on the other team. I don't think he likes quiet guys. He likes guys in front mucking it up. I think he will love playing and dealing with the high shot totals.

One thing I wondered after comparing shots in the 3rd. High volumes of low danger shots keeps Smith warm and sharp. I wonder if Quick doesn't let in that 3rd goal if he wasn't cold. He seemed to struggle on the first few shots we put on net.

i hate you guys

gotta admit this rivalry is more intense than EDM vs CGY or LA vs SJ

sick games

but i still hate you guys

We love hating you too!

I struggled to find the right words to describe the relationship between the two teams and I think I've finally found it. Respect and pure emotion. IMO an emotion and roughness as close to old school as I've seen in quite a while (within the confines of the new NHL).

Fantastic, entertaining, nostalgic, scrappy.

I love it!

I'm sure it's comforting for the guys knowing they can let Smith take 30-40 SOG/night and not have to worry too much, but they really need to cut down on that cause we're going to get slaughtered when Lack needs to play and he's facing that same volume of shots.

you're just loving it because CGY is getting the most wins out of it lol

but yeah it does feel like it's 80s hockey

i respect how CGY built their team, which is without tanking (unlike your neighbor which to me i find they have nothing to gloat about seriously) and in return, the Kings don't wine about how life is unfair (unlike our own neighbors)

it's just two testosterone filled teams, classic hockey borderline insane

just wish we won a few games in the process!

My feelings as well. Im glad Im not the only one that thought Jagr seemed to have issues with his skates tonight. That chance he had on his first shift would have been awesome if it had gone in.

There's that too :) But I have soft spots for the Kings. IMO, Sutter continued to do great things behind the bench that he didn't complete here due to his time as GM. I lamented for a while before Sutter was fired from Calgary that he needed to go behind the bench. Iggy might have had his cup if he did. Too bad Iggy didn't join him sooner in LA. I'm glad Regehr did though! In some senses, some of the unfulfilled dreams from earlier in the decade rode on Darryl's shoulders while in LA

Even though Sutter is gone, I still respect the hell out of your team.

I thought Ferland looked completely lost out there tonight in both zones. Every time Monahan would try and get a cycle going Ferland would either not recognize it, go the wrong way, be out of position or have it bounce off his stick.

Put me down for calling up Janko and putting him on the top line and putting Ferland on the 4th line.

I think with Monahan, he has looked solid to me so far this year away from Gaudreau. His play has noticeably dipped when with Gaudreau though.

I'll be clear right away, that I'm not blaming it on Johnny, it's definitely a Monahan issue in that regard. However, Monahan on his own line looks willing to hold onto the puck and make plays, whereas he seems almost obligated to hand it off to Johnny when together.

Seems to me it's a mental thing where he wants to defer to Johnny based on what gave them success earlier in their careers, even though the evidence (small sample size, I know) suggests he has developed the ability to generate offence without Johnny, but just reverts back to old habits.

Ferland looks exactly like what he is. He is good for about 25% of the time. Last night was his usual 75%.
It's insane that this plug is a 1st liner and Bennett is not.

This is exactly what I have been saying about Ferland since before he was ever called up to the NHL. His game seems to sag when he is not playing really physical, even then I don't find him to be the most reliable defensively. Honestly, if Ferland is playing on the 4th line he will be more of a liability then he is on a higher line because 4th lines often gets stuck in the defensive zones and he seems lost there half the time. For the time being, I would try Jagr with Gaudreau & Monahan and put Ferland with Bennett & Versteeg, then both Versteeg and Ferland can move back to their natural sides where I think both are more effective.

Agreed. He's more suited for a third line role. Let him focus on being that physical/grinder type again who can still chip in. When he's on the top line, he focuses too much on producing and that tenacity just disappears.

Exactly. Although ideally I do agree with the sentiment that Janko should be recalled, but I wouldn't want Ferland on the 4th line, so someone in the top 9 would need to be moved or be a regular scratch. What I want to see is this:

Bennett - Monahan - Gaudreau
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Jankowski - Jagr
Glass - Stajan - Brouwer
x: Lazar & Versteeg
