Belmont (New York):
  • Many local riders were elsewhere today including Javier Castellano, John Velazquez, Luis Saez, in Philadelphia where the purses were far superior.
  • Once again, if Joel Rosario wins early on the card he normally repeats. And once again that happened today. He won races 3 and 6.
  • Paco Lopez also won twice including the $300,000 Grade II Kelso Handicap for trainer Jorge Navarro who has made some controversial headlines in recent days.
  • Trainer Chad Brown added two more wins to his meet lead.
  • Mid-atlantic rider Daniel Centeno rode for a rare time in New York and won race 8.
  • Mike Luzzi finished 3rd in the finale on a 35-to-1 shot and paid $8.50. Luzzi doesn't get the opportunity to ride much talent but he has been in the money in three of his last six starts.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Philly had its signature race day and over $7,000,000 wagered with two feature races holding purses of $1,000,000.
  • With all the talent on the card, only John Velazquez (races 6 and 9) and Todd Pletcher (races 7 and 9) had multiple victories.
  • West Coast came off a dominant Travers victory and repeated the performance in the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby at a chalky 4-to-5. Mike Smith/Bob Baffert have what will elevated into the top five echelon of current runners in North America (he was eighth prior to today). While I was all over his Travers Stakes victory at 6-to-1, I wasn't sure the colt could pull a repeat and looked at Irap (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill) who offered some value but he finished second even after an objection/inquiry. Irap suffered an injury during the race and the prognosis appears good. West Coast is now 8 6-2-0 lifetime.
  • In the $1,000,000 Grade I Cotillion, 3-year-old filly It Tiz Well (Drayden van Dyke/Jerry Hollendorfer) won for the fourth time in 8 starts in 2017. Abel Tasman, the favorite, finished second and she is now 10 6-3-0 with earnings well over $1.5 million.
  • My gosh, Page McKenney. What else needs to be said. Sending that beast off at 6-to-1 is wistfully criminal especially at Parx where he is now 6-for-7 lifetime. He won for the 20th time and sports a record of 20-15-4 in 51 starts. Once claimed for $16,000 in July 2013, the Pennsylvania-bred has now earned over $1.7 lifetime. That is what is known as a good purchase.
  • The $2 Pick 4 after race 8 paid over $29,000.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • A first-timer won race 5 at 34-to-1 with the longest odds on the board and paid over $70. The trainer tasted victory for the first time in 2017. The $2 tri paid over $8,000. The $1 super paid over $15,000 when three of the four highest odds managed to factor in the wager.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Kevin Gomez won the last two races and the double paid $624. One of the victories led to an astonishing 10/12/1 trifecta of $17,000+. The exacta was $726. The $1 super paid more than $22,000.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $93,000.
  • In the second to last race, a 24-to-1 bomb, first-time starter with the second highest odds on the board, was removed for a 4-to-5 Todd Pletcher 2-year-old. And guess who had the bomber on top?! $14.40 and $7.00 for 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Gulfstream usually isn't as generous with DQs. Damn, that would have been a whopper. You expect something more egregious when a bomb is removed. And imagine the Pick 6 with the favorite not winning that 5th leg.
  • The race day opened with a 17-to-1 winner.
  • In race 6, the original order was 18-to-1, 13-1, 7-1 and 16-1 which would have obliterated the tote board; however, after the first DQ of the day, the results changed to 18-1, 7-1, 16-1, 13-1. Pay outs included a $1 tri that paid over $2,700 and a $1 super for $25,000+.
  • Race 9 was topped by a 58-to-1 bomber. The winner paid $118. The exacta was $1,104.30. The trifecta paid $6,703.60. The $1 super was $14,873.80. The $2 Pick 3 was $9,048.80. The double was a phenomenal $1,047.40.

Arlington (Illinois):
  • The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot paid out $142,348
  • The meet ended today. Jose Valdivia, Jr. had 84 more wins than the runner up rider which is as dominating figure at a meet as I recall. According to track summaries, his 31% win percentage is the highest at the track for any meet through at least the last 40 years.
  • Larry Rivelli, the leading trainer at the meet, set a track record with 79 wins.
  • Hawthorne Race Course opens October 6. The racing board of Illinois meets Tuesday to discuss racing dates for 2018.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • The $.50 Pick 5 after the finale paid over $42,000.
  • There was a dead heat for victory in race 5.

Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • The $.20 Super High Five jackpot paid out $71,064.93.
  • Eurico Da Silva had four victories. He has been in the money in 17 of his last 27 rides. One of the wins today was in the $125,000 feature race with Mr. Havercamp who is 3-for-3 lifetime at Woodbine (2-for-2 on turf) with his only loss at Saratoga this summer in a Grade III.

Century Downs (near Calgary, Alberta, Canada):
  • A new facility debuted T-bred racing today.

Self-explanatory but certainly representative of a uptick in interest and fortune. I have Hip No. 105 marked for future interests and at $2.5 million he is center stage already.

Keeneland's September Yearling Sale ended Saturday following a 12-day run that saw commerce achieve heights not seen in nearly a decade. A spectacular crop of yearlings spurred bidding wars among domestic and foreign buyers throughout the auction, driving gross receipts above $300 million for the first time since 2008, while producing record average and median prices and the sale of 13 seven-figure horses.

Gross sales of $307,845,400 increased 12.81 percent over 2016 by surpassing last year's 13-day auction total of $272,890,500 on the seventh day of selling. Total sales represent the highest gross since the 15-day September Sale in 2008 when 3,605 horses sold for $327,999,100. This year 2,555 horses sold compared to 2,792 in 2016.

In the $300,000 Charles Town Oaks in West Virginia last night, a series of events led to remarkable results in a 10-horse field.

Mike Smith/Bill Mott being sent off at 7-to-1 was enticing enough.

Luis Saez (riding for Michael Matz, an exceptional conditioner) who could be the most underrated rider in North America won the race at 5-to-2.

However, a 75-to-1 bomb came in second interrupted the process. Edwin Gonzalez, who won six in one day at Tampa Bay earlier this year, finished in place position and paid a phenomenal $72 in the middle.

The Saez-Gonzalez-Smith trifecta returned almost $5,000 for a $2 bet.

Steve Hamilton/Rodney Jenkins, Maryland connections, had the favorite who flopped.

Many of the riders in Philly were at the event including John Velazquez and Drayden Van Dyke.

Belmont (New York):
  • Belmont was an absolute freak show today highlighted by the opener and the finale.
  • The race day opened with a 39-to-1 shot topping a ticket that paid $80 for the win. The longest shot on the board in an 8-horse field. Luis Reyes, the winning rider, had a 115-to-1 winner at Saratoga. A $1 exacta paid close to $400.
  • John Velazquez and Luis Saez followed with favorited in races 2 and 3, respectively.
  • Have whip will travel! Jersey Joe Bravo. A $53 winner in race 4 with a 25-to-1 bomb.
  • Luis Saez won his second of the day in race 5, a Grade II $300,000 purse. As mentioned above, Saez may be underrated and lack the national appeal of other riders but he can horseback. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $30,000.
  • Junior Alvarado...finally! At 7-to-1. This was the sleeper pick of the day.
  • Dylan Davis won race 7 on board a 15-to-1 morning line bet down to 7-1.
  • Race 8, in a $125,000 purse, Fourstar Crook (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) made for some anxious moments but the 5-year-old mare delivered and improved to 9-for-13 lifetime and 7-for-8 the last two years.
  • And then the nightcap happened which stupefied the masses. Bourbonfuhrme (Shannon Uske/Archibald Kingsley), the rider who is from New York city, shocked handicappers with a 73-to-1 shot topping a 41-to-1 ridden by that man again Luis Saez. I seem to recall Uske winning with a 100-to-1 in Monmouth years ago, so this isn't her biggest win ever but perhaps being at Belmont it is the most significant. Uske rarely -- if ever - rides in New York, usually in the NJ/PA circuit. The trainer has only 700 lifetime starts. The $1 exacta paid $1,800. The $.50 trifecta over $5,200 or more than 10 large for $1. The $.10 super paid over $5,600 or 56k for $1. The $.50 Pick 4 was $8,500+. The $.50 Pick 5 returned over $27,000.
  • New York handled about $10,000,000. in wagering

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Ashley Castrenze, boo yeah! I am not sure why she isn't getting mounts, she maintains her bug. Today, she won at 7-to-1 in the second-to-last race in her lone opportunity. Perhaps injury or something else but she needs to be riding more often.

Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • In race 10, a $150,000 purse, Ivan Fallunovalot (Luis Quinonez/W.T. Howard) set a track record in winning this exact race for the 4th time. The "local hero," per a track employee, is being touted as a potential Breeders' Cup participant. The 7-year-old Texas bred is 17-for-28 lifetime.
  • Jockey Ricardo Santana and trainer Steve Asmussen teamed for four victories. Asmussen was 13 4-2-2 on the card.
  • OKLAHOMA DERBY: Remington is the only track to my knowledge that shows weight of horses. The #4 is about 200 pounds less than other runners. And the odds reflected it. The suggested pick of 3, 5 and 8 materialized very nicely. While the 3 and 8 got much play, the 8 was ice, ice baby on the board. The race finished 5-3-7 with the winner charging convincingly at odds of 11-to-1 which was much better than anticipated. $26 winner and a $90.20 exacta. Untrapped (Ricardo Santana/Steve Asmussen) won for the second time in 10 starts. All is forgiven for the Rebel Stakes loss. Asmussen entered tonight 0-for-21 in the Oklahoma Derby. He is now 1-for-22.

OKLAHOMA DERBY (Grade III)
  • What: The premium thoroughbred event in the state of Oklahoma. The 3, 5 and 8 are expected to attract much of the attention.
  • History: Cliff Berry and the late Garrett Gomez both have won this race a record three times, a trivia question asked during last night's racing.
  • When: Sunday, September 24, 2017, Race 11 of 12, 7:46 Central Time (8:46 Eastern Time)
  • Where: Remington Park (Oklahoma City, OK)
  • Distance: 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs)
  • Surface: Dirt
  • Purse: $400,000
  • Runners (age, sex): Three-year-old. Open.

Belmont (New York):
  • More bombs set off in New York. It isn't common for Belmont to have these shockers.
  • In race 4, the winner paid $106.50 and the Pick 3 returned $9225.00
  • In race 5, the winner paid $24.80 and the Pick 5 was a phenomenal $316,352. The pick 4 was an astounding $70,996. The Pick 3 was $4,608.
  • In race 6, the Pick 3 was a remarkable $14,141.

Belmont Park (New York):
  1. Jose Ortiz returned to riding and won a race. Shock.
  2. Junior Alvarado won the finale. Yeah! $20 winner.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • A horse named Unbridled Escape won and paid over $63. The trainer was 0-for-61 at the meet. Boo yeah! Unbridled.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • How can Corey Lanerie be set off at 20-to-1? He won. In fact, he won the first three races tonight.

SANTA ANITA, TODAY:

Santa Anita opens its brief meet before Del Mar takes over center stage for the southern Cal market with the Breeders' Cup international presence eventually taking stage.

Here is Santa Anita's opening card: http://www.drf.com/race-entries/track/SA/country/USA/date/09-29-2017

CALIFORNIA 2018:

California also announced racing dates for 2018:

CHRB approves 2018 dates for Southern California racing -- http://www.drf.com/news/chrb-approves-2018-dates-southern-california-racing
INFO RELEASED FOR BREEDERS' CUP 2017:

http://www.drf.com/news/breeders-cup-classic-last-race-nov-4-card
Post time for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Del Mar near San Diego will be 5:35 p.m. Pacific, or 8:35 p.m. Eastern, the Breeders’ Cup announced on Wednesday.

The announcement included all of the post times for the 13 Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 3-4, while leaving out the specific race order. The exceptions were the Classic, the last race on the card on Saturday, and the Distaff, the second-to-last race on the Friday card. The Distaff is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. Pacific.

The Saturday card, which will include nine Breeders’ Cup races, will start at 10:10 a.m. Pacific, with the first Breeders’ Cup race scheduled for noon, following three non-Breeders’ Cup races. The Friday card, which will feature four Breeders’ Cup races, will begin at 11:25 a.m. Pacific, with the first Breeders’ Cup race scheduled for 2:25 p.m., following five non-Breeders’ Cup races.

Breeders’ Cup does not announce the specific race order or the wagering menu until entries are taken, in order to place races in spots that the organization prefers for wagering purposes. This year, the specific race order and wagering menu for both days will be announced on Oct. 25, 10 days before the event begins.

Hopefully, the Breeders Cup names a host track for 2019 in the next few weeks, by the end of this calendar year.

Belmont (New York):
  • The meet's leading rider Javier Castellano (3 wins) and leading trainer Chad Brown (2 wins), twice as a team, were the only multiple winners.
  • Junior Alvarado won race 5. Perhaps he is getting back into racing shape and form. Having two shoulders surgeries in a matter of weeks has to take its toll. And shock, shock, Alvarado came flying off the pace to win.
  • There was an interesting photo finish. Not only did it involve the Ortiz brothers, but also the same trainer Linda Rice though she had starters for different owners. I am not sure the last time I saw a photo finish for the same trainer.
  • Joel Rosario had some sort of sickness and was off his mounts today.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 5: The Pick 4 paid $16,930. The degree of difficulty was raised with the Pick 5 pay off which was issued to winners who hit 4 of the 5 races (no one hit all 5) and that amount was $1,606. The $1 super was over $19 grand. The exacta exceeded $800. The win bet was $60.40.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie had a rough beginning to the day with 7th and 6th place finishes but he rebounded and was in the money his next seven starts. He was 9 3-3-1 today. Three more wins. He is too good of a rider when in Kentucky to lay off. He leads the meet by 10 victories and is at 25% (18-for-73).
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three times and for three trainers.
  • Gerald Bennett, a fairly successful trainer at Tampa Bay, won today after beginning the meet 1-for-57.
Santa Anita (California):
  • In the Grade III Eddie D Stakes, Tyler Connor earned his first graded stakes winner on board Mr. Roary, trained by George Papaprodromou. Connor is a presence in some of the mid-Atlantic tracks such as Delaware and Penn National. For him to win at Santa Anita has to be the thrill of his young riding life. The win paid $47.60. At 22-to-1, he was the fourth highest odds in a 10-horse field. The winner was sixth in the stretch and won by a flared nostril. That'll get some attention! Om, who once beat American Pharoah, was sent off the favorite and finished third.
2017 Eddie D

Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • What payouts in races 5 through 7.
  • Race 5: $151.90 for the win. $664.20 for the exacta. $765 for the double. $14,675 for the $1 Pick 3
  • Race 6: $85.80 for the win. $764.30 for the exacta. $2,479.35 for the $1 tri. The double was $2,767.90. That is as big a double as I recall in the last many years.
  • Race 7: The $1 Pick 4 was $110,309. The $1 Pick 3 was almost $4,000.

Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts):
  • The power of Mike Luzzi. Two victories. When Luzzi is in a race, the only question is who comes in second. :)
  • Trainer Jay Bernardini, who is loaded tomorrow, won one of his two starts. As has been stated often , he is very good at Mountaineer and here.
  • The races were off the turf which threw a monkey wrench into some handicapping. The track was wet from heavy rains earlier in the day.
Belmont (New York):
  • New York had a big 10-race card with three Grade I races.
  • Jose Ortiz won three starts including the Grade I Vosburgh (trainer Kiaran McLaughlin) in race 7 and the Grade I Beldame (trainer Bill Mott) in race 9.
  • Chad Brown trained three winners including first and second place in the $500,000 Joe Hirsch feature race with rider Joel Rosario in race 10.
  • Chalk up another win for Junior Alvarado. As mentioned yesterday, he is returning to form.
Finger Lakes (New York):
  • The combo of Chris DeCarlo/Todd Pletcher won a $200,000 purse for new York breds. How Pletcher goes off at that price is surprising. DeCarlo, as is stated here often, is still a vaery capable rider.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • It is fair to say Chad Brown is successful at his occupation. He had four runners, both in graded stakes races, and finished 1-2 in each. That is what is known as a dream result. Totals at two tracks for Brown: 13 5-4-1.
  • Feargal Lynch had four victories including two Grade III wins.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie is pure gold. He had four winners today including a natural hat trick to end the 11-race card. He can ride inside Kentucky.
  • Both graded stakes races today were won by Corey Lanerie.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione had a big day, which was expected, with three more wins including one of the two $400,000 purses. The other was won by the combo of Carlos Montalvo/Steven Dwoskin.
  • Tomorrow, October 1, is the closing date of the meet.
Santa Anita (California):
  • There were five Grade I stakes races, all with $300,000 purses.
  • Flavien Prat won four times including three Grade I. That should be enough to secure Jockey of the Week. Richard Mandella trained two Grade I winners.
  • Corey Nakatani won three times.
  • Mubtaahij, an Irish-bred, won the Grade I Awesome Again. Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert teamed for two wins.

Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • Patrick Husbands had four winners.

More star power for Bob Baffert...

http://www.drf.com/news/another-potential-classic-starter-baffert-mubtaahij-scores-awesome-again

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bob Baffert is loading up on bullets to take on Gun Runner in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

He put another in the chamber on Saturday when Mubtaahij won the Grade 1, $300,690 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, giving him at least four potential starters in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Del Mar.

Baffert also has Arrogate, Collected, and West Coast pointing for the Classic, and Mubtaahij earned a free roll in the race through the Win and You’re In program. Baffert also trains Cupid, who was fourth in the Awesome Again, beaten two lengths.

“It’s a nice problem to have, but it’s a long ways off,” Baffert said. “I don’t want to jinx myself. They’re all in. They’re all being pointed for it unless they’re not training well.”

Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts):
  • The power of Mike Luzzi, part 2! Four wins this weekend. Three riders had two wins including Mike Luzzi ( 7 wins, second most) who shipped in from New York and leading rider Tami Piermarini (15 wins, 31%) who has excelled at the track historically.
  • Michael Stidham (8 wins) edged out Jay Bernardini (7 wins) for winningest trainer.
  • An incredible payout in the second race with a $60 winner and a $69 place horse. The exacta returned over $1,100 and the tri more than $5,600.
  • The track's eight day meet ended today. It is expected that the track will run a similar sized meet in 2018 though that is not guaranteed with property in the early stages of redevelopment.
Belmont (New York):
  • Significant Form (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade III feature race. The 2-year-old filly broke her maiden in her second start. She debuted with a victory in late August but was DQ'd and placed seventh after a riding infraction by Irad Ortiz, Jr.
  • The rider standings is close with Javier Castellno (21 wins), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (19 wins) and Luis Saez (17 wins) in the top three.
  • Chad Brown (21 wins, 32%) leads Todd Pletcher (9 wins, 27%) as top trainer at the meet.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • The meet closed today with Tyler Gaffalione and Victor Barboza the leading jockey and trainer, respectively. Gaffalione edged Emisael Jaramillo by four wins.
  • The track is now dark until December 1. Until then, enjoy the Gulfstream Park West -- formerly Calder -- meet for 40 days through November 26.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Itsinthepost, a 5-year-old French-bred, won for the 6th time in 29 starts and as the favorite in the Grade II John Henry feature race.
These figures tonight at Santa Anita have been staggering.
  • Race 1: $34.40 winner
  • Race 2: $21.00 winner
  • Race 3: $15.00 winner
  • Race 4: $71.00 winner
  • Race 5: $34.80 winner

Those results led to a $.50 Pick 4 which returned $33,046.05, $.50 Pick 5 which paid $351,257.85 and a daily double which was $1,492.00.

The info generally takes a few hours but eventually the location -- on track or off -- will be published.

Chantilly Racecourse (France):

  • Four races had "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup implications and the victors were Japanese-bred Red Falx, Wild Illusion (Great Britain-bred) and Irish breds Happily and Rhododendron. The full list can be found here: http://www.breederscup.com/races/breeders-cup-challenge
  • In the 1 /12 mile L'Arc De Triomphe, with its $6,000,000 purse., Enable, a Great Britain-bred, won at near even money with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. Trained by John Gosden. The winner is now 7-for-8 lifetime with a 6-race win streak.

Belmont (New York):
  • Javier Castellano continues to rip up the meet. He had four more victories to add to his meet total. Castellano has 27 wins, five more than Irad Ortiz, Jr.
  • Leading trainers Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher each won twice.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Bombs away. The $1 Pick 5 returned over $160,000 with the conclusion of the 5th race.
  • Bug Evin Roman won four times in six starts including riding bombs in the first race for $44 and the 4th race for $65.80. He concluded the day with a phenomenal performance going 6 4-1-1 in the 8-race card.
  • The $1 Pick 3 following race 3 paid over $2,500.
  • The $1 Pick 3 following race 4 paid over $2,300 and the $.50 trifecta returned more than $975.

Belmont (New York):
  • A staggering payout in the opener when the runner up paid $115 to place. That is as high as I remember in New York. The exacta paid a stunning $1,040.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three times.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won race 2 and paid $19.80 and in race 4 he won and paid $40.00. Both are unusual sums for a rider of his caliber but the latter is shocking. In both races, Junior Alvarado was runner up.
  • In race 3, the $2 Pick 3 paid $1,457.
  • In race 4, the $2 Pick 3 paid $1,203.
  • In race 5, the $2 Pick 5 paid over $91,000. The $2 Pick 4 returned $10.905.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • The opening day of the meet.
  • Whitmore (Manny Franco/Ron Moquett) won the Grade II Phoenix and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Twin Spires Sprint.
  • Heavenly Love (Julien Leparoux/Mark Casse) won the Grade I Alciabiades and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • The opening day of the meet.
  • Race 2: The winner returned $141.80 to win and $71.20 to place. The exacta paid over $900.

Gulfstream Park in south Florida announced a record spring/summer meet with a total of $603,000,000 wagered over 106 days. The average handle was estimated at $5,400,000. The track is dark until early December as the primary south Florida focus becomes Gulfstream Park West (the former Calder).

This was a thoroughly mesmerizing day at the various tracks especially in the graded stakes races.

Belmont Park (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz. Jr. (4 wins). John Velazquez (3 wins) and Manny Franco (2 wins) combined for 9 wins in 11 races.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won both Grade I races and his brother Jose finished second in each.
  • Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown had a 1-to-5 which nearly finished off-the-board which would have caused many anguish among bridge jumpers. However, even when an Ortiz loses, one wins and even when Brown loses he wins. Irad Ortiz, Jr/Chad Brown were on top.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr won his second of the day in race 3.
  • John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher romped and won yet again in a race of 2-year-olds in race 6.
  • In race 8, the Grade I $500,000 Champagne, Firenze Fire (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Jason Servis) is now 3-for-4 lifetime with a $24.00 winner under perhaps the hottest rider at the meet currently. The exacta was $170 which is not common for Grade I races in New York.
  • In race 9, the $500,000 Hill Prince, Yoshida (Manny Franco/Bill Mott), a Japanese-bred, won and topped a handsome exacta of $130.50. There was an extremely rare 4-way stewards' inquiry, too, which was nullified.
  • New York-bred Diversify (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Richard Violette) wired the field and now sports a lifetime mark of 10 7-2-0. The 4-year-old gelding defeated Keen Ice, who got much of handicappers' attention despite being on the losing end in 20 of 23 lifetime races. Keen Ice (Jose Ortiz/Todd Pletcher) is now 24 3-4-5 but will always be remembered for defeating American Pharaoh in the 2015 Travers Stakes.
  • Trainer Todd Pletcher won three races.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Ashley! Yeah. Ashley Castrenze had four rides today and won the opener. I am not sure what is ongoing in her camp but she maintains the 5-pound bug.
  • Luzzi! Woo. The power of Mike Luzzi has no limits. Today, he went to his home state, had one ride and it was a winner for Ron Moquett. If you need a win, call Mike Luzzi!
Laurel (Maryland):
  • After race 5, the $2 Pick 5 paid $12,784.20.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • What a massive crowd at hand, reported at over 28,000. Approximately $12,000,000 wagered including close to $2m on site. One of the most entertaining venues in the sport.
  • The collective eyes of the horse racing world were focused on Keeneland for much of the day. What talent!
  • Race 5, 6, 7, 8 9 were all graded stakes and races 6 through 9 were "Win and You're In" for the Breeders Cup next month.
  • In race 5, Bucchero (Fernando De La Cruz/Tim Glyshaw) had the stunner of the day in the Grade II $200,000 Woodford. An Indiana-bred who won as a favorite in his most recent start in his home state won for the 9th time in 22 starts. To win a Grade II in Kentucky is lead-story material. The winner paid $55.20.
  • In race 6, Tru Romance (Joe Bravo/Timothy Hills) at 30-to-1 led much of the way and would have had the shocker of the day but finished third behind prohibitive favorite Finley'sluckycharm (Brian Hernandez, Jr./William Calhoun), a 4-year-old filly who is now 9-for-12 lifetime.
  • In race 7, the $400,000 Grade I First Lady, Zipessa (Jersey Joe Bravo/Michael Stidham) shocked the crowd and paid $35.20 to win. The 5-year-old mare was 0-for-5 in 2017. Joe Bravo, have whip will travel!
  • In race 8, the $500,000 Grade I Futurity Free Drop Billy (Robby Albarado/Dale Romans) won as advertised and could get some early attention for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.
  • In race 9, the $1,000,000 Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile, Suedois (Daniel Tudhope/David O'Meara), a French-bred with a 15-1 morning line, with a European racing background, pulled a minor stunner

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • The bomb of the day when a 62-to-1 paid $126.80 to win a top an exacta which returned $1,097.70
Santa Anita (California):
  • Kent Desormeaux had three victories highlighted by Roy H. (trained by Peter Miller) in the Grade I $300,000 Sprint which was a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. Desormeaux has been steady if not spectacular in California recently. He can still horseback!

Flemington (Australia):

Make that 21 in a row for Winx.

Winx brought the city of Melbourne to a standstill off the track before dazzling on it as she produced a breathtaking performance to stretch her winning sequence to 21 on her first visit to Flemington.

In front of a big crowd at Australia's premier racecourse, Winx put on a show to remember with regular rider Hugh Bowman barely moving a muscle as the brilliant Chris Waller-trained mare cruised to her 14th Group 1 victory.

Belmont (New York):
  • Another incredible performance by one of the Ortiz brothers. This time it was Jose Ortiz who shined with four victories including two Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Grade I wins and a natural hat trick to end the day. If you played Jose Ortiz in races 7-8-9, go to the window and cash $92.75 for every $1 wagered. Yesterday, it was Irad Ortiz, Jr. winning both Grade I races with his brother Jose in second for each. I don't know who will get Jockey of the Week but I suppose one of the brothers will receive it. EDIT: Irad Ortiz, Jr. received t.
  • In the $400,000 Grade I Frizette, for 2 year-old fillies, Separationofpowers (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) returned $5.90 in her third lifetime start. Onto the Breeders' Cup. The exacta returned $47.40 when Junior Alvarado's 9-to-1 finished runner up.
  • In the prior race, Junior Alvarado/Mark Hennig had a $51.50 winner with a ticket that paid a jawdropping $9,993 for a successful $.50 trifecta. The runner up paid $35.30 in the middle and the third place finisher returned $22.80 for show. The $1 super paid over $67,000.
  • In race 8, the Grade I $500,000 Flower Bowl, War Flag (Jose Ortiz/Shug McGaughey) paid $21.20 for the win. The 4-year-old filly will go to the Breeders' Cup. She is 5-for-8 lifetime and was one of just two U.S.-breds entered in a field of six. The Chilean-bred Dacita finished second and she is now 10-5-1 in 20 starts. The heavily favorite Grand Jete had a rider switch to Javier Castellano but finished third. Trained by Chad Brown, the filly was bred in Great Britain and is now 4-3-4 in 13 starts.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Two more Breeders' Cup races in the books.
  • In the $250,000 Grade III Dixiana Bourbon, Flameaway (Julien Leparoux/Make Casse) paid $12.80- and get invited to the big show. The 2-year-old Ontario-bred colt is now 3-for-4 lifetime. She goes to the Juvy Turf.
  • In the $500,000 Grade I Spinster, 5-year-old mare Romantic Vision (Brian Hernandez, Jr./George Arnold) won, paid $14.80 and received an invitation to the Distaff in next month's Breeders' Cup.

Santa Anita (California):

  • Unique Bella won the $100,000 L.A. Woman Stakes handily under Mike Smith, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. The PA-bred is now 5-for-6 lifetime with a 5-race win streak. She has dominated in prior races. Look at her male pedigree: Tapit-Pulpit-Unbridled's Song, A.P. Indy, Unbridled, Unbridled (cross-bred, so in demand he did it twice), Bertrando.

The final Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race:
Oct 11 JP Morgan Chase Jessamine Stakes Keeneland Juvenile Fillies Turf

Belmont (New York):
  • As I often say about Joel Rosario....if he wins early, he generally will repeat later in the card. And today he won three times including the final two races one of which was the Grade II $200,000 Knickerbocker. Blacktype, a French-bred, trained by Christophe Clement looked very comfortable on the off track, his first time running on a sloppy surface in 28 races. A hard-driving Joe Bravo came in second.
  • In addition to the turf Knick, Joel Rosario won twice on dirt today, which I believe doubled his win total on that surface for the meet. He has been outstanding on turf this meet. In today's finale, English Soul was ridden to a 14 3/4 length win in her second career race. Something storybook.
  • Javier Castellano has had a dreadful half-week but he did pick up West Coast for Bob Baffert, previously ridden by Mike Smith, in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He is 21 0-3-7 since going 4-for-5 on Thursday. A 21-race losing streak. And perhaps just as noticeable was his absence from a 9-horse field in the Grade II today. For Castellano not to be in a Grade I or Grade II in New York is unusual.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. has a 3-win lead over Javier Castellano (30-27)at this meet.

Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • The $1 pick 3 beginning with race 8 paid over $7,000. The sequence began with an $83 winner ridden by 7-pound bug Alvaro Donis.
  • Luca Panici won the second leg of the aformentioned Pick 3 with a $17.80 winner which made for an $865 double.
  • After the 10th and final race, the $1 Pick 4 paid over $14,000.
  • The meet at the former Calder race track is still in its embryonic stage but Tyler Gaffalione leads with 7 wins and a 25% winning percentage.
Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • There aren't many 12-year-olds still running but a British Columbia bred was out for the 81st time in the opening race and though not successful he has to have the heart of a champion.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Kent Desormeaux repeated his 3-win Sunday with a 3-win Monday, The man can ride.
  • Kent Desormeaux won the day's two highest purses. He was victorious in the $100,000 Surfer Girl with a French-bred running in the U.S. for the first time, and $100,000 Zuma Beach. Desormeaux and a surf board in the winner's circle seems appropriate.
  • Talent Scout (Drayden Van Dyke/Bob Baffert) won his maiden race in a $50,000 California-bred maiden special weight. Baffert has been using Van Dyke frequently lately. Martin Garcia, normally a top two rider for Baffert, rode for Simon Callaghan.

Arrogate will retire after next month's Breeders' Cup. The hope that he would be undefeated heading into January's Pegasus Stakes never materialized. The second annual Pegasus is at a critical juncture right now.
