With a scant few days left before the HFNHL trade deadline at which most figured the Western Conference-leading Blue Jackets to be buyers, they have instead turned seller, shipping out veteran winger Shawn McEachern to Washington for prospect defenceman Dan Jancevski and a draft pick.

"No, this has nothing to do with our expectations for the post-season. We continue to work hard to ensure a strong finish for this club, and a favourable berth in the playoffs. The Cup is our goal, plain and simple.

"This was just a move in fairness to Shawn, who because of the depth on our roster has had to accept fewer minutes than he deserves. We were able to work out a deal to send him to another contending team where he will get second-line ice-time, and still have great hopes for the post-season."

Rumours suggest Emerson swung the deal with the Capitals some weeks ago, but had to wait for the All-Star break to be able to move McEachern without penalty, having signed him to a contract extension during the previous season.

In completing the trade, Emerson is reunited with Dan Jancevski, who Emerson was responsible for selecting when he was GM of the Capitals. Jancevski is a tough-as-nails defensive blueliner who has been doing yeoman's service in the AHL the past few years, but has yet to make the jump to the NHL as more than an injury replacement.

"Obviously, we're hoping that Dan gets an opportunity to demonstrate what he can do on a game-in, game-out basis. I liked him then (when he drafted Jancevski), I like him now."

In 62 games with the AHL Iowa Stars this season, the 6-3, 212 pound blueliner has 30 points, 79 penalty minutes and is a +4.

Columbus congratulates University of Minnesota center Ryan Potulny on his Hobey Baker nomination. Potulny amassed 34 goals and 24 assists for 58 points in 38 games to lead the University of Minnesota in scoring this season. Potulny was also named to the All-WCHA team. Columbus fans will cheer him on as he leads first-ranked Minnesota to a Frozen Four championship.

Congratulations also to Nathan Davis, who led his Univerosity of Miami (Ohio) Redhawks in scoring this season as a sophomore, with 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points in 34 games. Davis will look to be a big part of that program (which has also produced Hobey Baker candidate defenceman Andy Greene) in his junior year as Miami challenges for top spot in the Conference.
