They have 1/5th of the reg. season games the next two closest leagues (NBA/NHL) have. The off season is guaranteed to be the longest.

The players need the rest. Plus the offseason goes by pretty quickly with FA, Draft and OTA's.
No other sport has basically a short training camp in the middle.of the off season.

Could you imagine the NHL having OTA's at the beginning of august?

NFL needs the ota given the turnover in coaching and roster. They need to get the new playbook and meet up with new teammates.

yea the nfl is unique with its low number of games, and high number of players per team, maybe the XFL will quench your thirst

OTA's aren't really like training camps. No pads, low intensity. They are essential for rookies though. Vets..not so much.
