Serious question, if they finish bottom 5 in the league, is Chayka on the hot seat? When are they expected to make the playoffs? Is he expected to resign OEL and Hjalmarsson next offseason?

This is the better question. The Coyotes obviously have made an attempt to be competitive this season by completely revamping the coaching staff and acquiring Stepan, Raanta and Hjalmarsson. The roster is still extremely young and inexperienced though - especially at forward. Now they didnt exactly have success with Tippett, Doan, Smith and Hanzal leading the team so changes were necessary. Did he do enough? Did he pick the right coach (and his system) for the talent on the roster? Time will tell.

Most Coyotes fans acknowledged that a lot has to go right for the team to be any good this year. Really needed a veteran or 2 at forward especially RHS. Only 2 forwards on the roster shoot right and 1 is a rookie.

Tanking is a wonderful thing, provided you get a McDavid or Matthews.

Arizona has some decent pieces; but they all need to perform at a higher level than they have so far.

Finish near the bottom every year and draft near the top. Any of us can do that and have lots of good prospects after a few years. He hasnt done a thing yet to even be a top 20 GM. Every GM pulls off good trades. Nothing special there. Team still near the bottom. I think he is closer to being fired than he is to being a top 3 GM.

How about we give it 20 games atleast for this team and coaching staff that had a lot of turnover before we criticise.

Such a clutch GM. Finished bottom 3 in the standings last year, and on pace to finish even lower this year.

The team in general is going to waste all of OEL's ELC/RFA years.

Proclaiming Chayka a top GM because of a bunch of transactions that just appear above average is dumb. Proclaiming Chayka a failure 5 games into an 82 game season is the exact same amount of dumb. Anyone currently celebrating in this thread should delete their account.

No, he's not. Not anywhere near close to top 3. Those claims that he is, were clearly jumping the gun.

He simply hasn't been around long enough to rank him in the top 3. I did like his offseason, especially firing Tippett, which was long overdue. He still has a little ways to go.

Remember where you are. This is the land where when a player has a slow start (like 5 games into the season) they're starting to decline or are a bust, etc. And the players who have a hot start, despite clearly not producing to this level in the past several seasons (*cough* Dustin Brown *cough*) are experiencing a huge resurrection!

I stand by this thread and my OP. 5 games does not mean anything
Did the 82 games last year mean anything?

4-5 more top 5 picks and 4-5 years to develop those players and John Chayka is gonna have the rest of the league RIGHT where he wants them

Can a GM realistically be judged on performance after 1 season?

And how any top 5 picks do you think they have had?
